    Readers’ Favorite Running Routes

    Paul Ghent, Belgium

I love running in Ghent. It is completely flat, so encouraging for beginners and people aiming for personal bests. There is a rowing lake with a 5km track. This connects with a nature reserve on an 8km loop. If that isn’t enough, there is another nature reserve, full of birds and canals surrounded by a 10km loop. I will be running my first marathon in Ghent in March 2022. Anyone?

    Jennifer Nice, France

In Nice Provence, I really enjoyed joining the local joggers running along what is one of the most beautiful streets in the world—the Promenade des Anglais. You have the fresh salty sea breezes filling your lungs, the sun shining on the waves of the sea, and the beautiful buildings standing along the running route. Feel free to grab some fresh shellfish and a glass of wine on the beach as a reward.

    Lisa Offa UK

The Offa’s Dyke path, which runs from Prestatyn to Chepstow, provides stunning scenery and is just perfect to focus on the run. The sections of the route I like the most include the slopes (坡地) of Moel Famau and the section from Llangollen to Bodfari, where there is an excellent pub (The Dinorben Arms) to refuel in comfort. Perfect.

    Richard Protaras, Cyprus

My favorite route is in Protaras, Cyprus. There is a path that runs from Fig Tree bay to Polyxenia beach and you have wonderful views of the bays and beaches while running. The amazing clear seas and sandy beaches make it very pleasant. The best time to go is early morning when the sun isn’t blazing and the paths aren’t too busy with holidaymakers.

    21. Which route best suits people who enjoy nature reserves?

    A. Nice, France. B. Offa, UK.

    C. Ghent, Belgium. D. Protaras, Cyprus.

    22. What do the routes shared by Jennifer and Richard have in common?

    A. They have beautiful streets. B. They have lovely sea views.

    C. They are famous for seafood. D. They are fit for morning runners.

    23. Where can the text be found?

    A. In a science paper. B. In a history novel.

    C. In a sports magazine. D. In a geography textbook.

    B

My mother at 85 was quick, with good vision and sharp reaction for her age, but one day she knocked into three parked cars on a supermarket parking lot. We never found out exactly how it happened, but the investigators figured Mom hit the accelerator instead of the brake.

Mom was lucky, even though she spent two weeks in the hospital. But we unwillingly concluded that it was time to take Mom's car keys. Tears ran down her cheeks. I think she never felt old until that moment, when I took away the independence provided by the car.

In the days that followed, we suggested she take taxis to shop, but she wouldn’t do it: “That’s not my styled Fortunately, she lived in the city and quickly slipped into the habit of taking the bus She began to enjoy her new life. But most old people have no convenient public transportation or shops within walking distance.

We seemed to have made a right decision. But is tragedy like that a reason to take away the car keys of the elderly? I think not Age doesn’t necessarily prove anything. Slower reactions or not, senior citizens are much better than teenagers. They usually drive more slowly. They get honked at a lot, but their slower speed reduces the risk of death and destruction. The worst risk-takers on the highway are young men between the ages of 18 to 25, but no one suggests taking away their keys or raising the driving age to 26.

The death rate in the past year for motorists between 16 and 20, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was more than double that for drivers over 70. The older citizen who tries to avoid danger is likely to take personal responsibility more seriously than a younger person who causes danger through partying and risk.

So, let Granny drive for as long as she can. Road age is a lot less dangerous than road rage.

    24. Why was Mom sad when her car keys were taken away?

    A. Because she was seriously injured.

    B. Because she realized she was old.

    C. Because she was misunderstood.

    D. Because she had to walk to shop.

    25. What did the writer think of their decision?

    A. Necessary B. Ridiculous C. Unreasonable D. Unimportant

    26. Which of the following opinions does the writer support?

A Both senior and young drivers take risks while driving.

    B. It’s necessary to raise the driving age to 26.

    C. Men under 26 should be forbidden to drive.

    D. Seniors shouldn’t be banned from driving only because of their age.

    27. What does the passage mainly talk about?

    A. The accident Mom caused. B. The issue of senior drivers.

    C. The legal age to drive. D. The bad teenage driving.

    C

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added the Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) to its list of extinct species in July, 2022. People will never see a living Chinese paddlefish again as it has been declared extinct. For many people in China, this may have been the first time they heard the name of the fish that was once a denizen (常客) of the Yangtze River Basin.

The fish had lived in the Yangtze River Basin since about 200 million years ago. It was among the world’s biggest freshwater species and could grow up to 7.5 meters in length. The last time the fish was spotted was in 2003 in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in Yibin, Sichuan Province. It was an injured female sturgeon (鲟鱼). After local people treated its wounds, it was released into the river.

According to the IUCN, the global sturgeon reassessment found that all remaining 26 sturgeon species in the world are now at risk of extinction, up from 85 in 2009. Their decline over the past three generations is steeper than previously thought.

“The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish should be a warning for everyone,” said Zhou Fei, China’s chief program officer at the World Wide Fund for Nature. “It has provided an opportunity for conservation experts to raise public awareness about the urgency of protecting freshwater species in the Yangtze River Basin and educate the public on the need for more efforts to save other species living in the region from extinction,” he added.

To prevent further loss of freshwater species in China, people must act urgently. There is no time to waste. Also, long-term threats to their life and habitats must be eliminated by taking systematic protection measures. The protection of biodiversity will delay the extinction of some species. It’s not something that can be achieved by certain departments. Instead, it requires joint efforts from all sectors of society.

    28. What did the IUCN announce recently?

    A. The extinction of the Chinese paddlefish.

    B. A new list of endangered wildlife in the world.

    C. A prohibition on overfishing in freshwater lakes.

    D. The discovery of a rare species in the Yangtze River.

    29. What is the purpose of paragraph 2?

A To present the diversity of freshwater species.

    B. To stress the key role of sturgeon in the ecosystem.

    C. To offer some information about the Chinese paddlefish.

    D. To show the difficulty of protecting the Chinese paddlefish.

    30. What can we learn from Zhou Fei’s words?

    A. The extinction of species is a wake-up call to mankind.

    B. It is challenging for the public to save endangered species.

    C. The global sturgeon has been declining sharply in recent years.

    D. The loss of freshwater species results in serious consequences.

    31. What does the underlined word “eliminated” in the last paragraph mean?

    A. Ignored. B. Removed. C. Estimated. D. Preserved.

    D

Following the crowd may not always be in a person’s best interest. But new research suggests that teens who go along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.

Scientists have known that close friendships do good to health. That’s true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health.

So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens’ closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data they found a strong connection between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to a close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health. Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.

Going along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead to some kids’ risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge, Allen acknowledges. “Finding the right balance is the key. Teens shouldn’t lose heart for not finding this easy.” And, he adds, “Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”

    32. Which column does the passage probably come from?

    A. Sports. B. Health. C. Fashion. D. Entertainment.

    33. Which of the following is the closest to the underlined word “drawbacks”?

    A. challenges. B. mistakes. C. influences. D. disadvantages.

    34. According to what Allen said, we can know that ________.

    A. in order to do better at school, teens should not follow the crowd

    B. teens take up smoking, drinking or using drugs face peer pressure

    C. despite the challenges in peer pressure, teens should not give up

    D. parents should understand their teens and stop them going with friends

    35. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. It is not easy to get along with peers.

    B. Teen friendships may make healthier adults.

    C. It is important to deal with teens’ pressure.

    D. Adults should pay attention to teens’ health.

    第二节(5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5)

Why Are Plane Seats Always Blue?

Planes are an engineering masterpiece. Since they were invented, they have made the world a better place. Like never before, we can travel to almost every corner of the world within hours.

____36____ The only time they land is when they need to get passengers on board or go through regular checks. This means the crew doesn’t have much time to clean up the plane. ____37____ Airlines are likely to go with dark blue fabric (布料)it’s much more of a bother to clear up a red wine spill on white fabric than on blue.

Blue is also a color that can make passengers less anxious. If you are an 18-year-old teenager, you are probably not afraid of flying. But the aviation (航空) industry isn’t that old. ____38____ In fact, even today in the 21st century, 5% of the world’s population has ever flown on an airplane, which is extremely low. But that also means, most people are afraid of flying. Some statistics show that around 80 percent of people are scared to fly. ____39____ Compared to other means of transport such as cars, it’s a much safer option.

Anyway, people are afraid of heights. That’s why planes are purposefully designed in such a way to make you feel safe. For example, the color red is associated with objects to remind people of danger or to warn people that they need to stop. Green is used to make people aware of the presence of an emergency exit. ____40____

    A. The airline business is expensive.

    B. Unlike cars, planes are made to fly all the time.

    C. Many airlines redesign or change their seats often.

    D. Of course, it doesn’t make sense to be afraid of boarding a plane.

    E. As recent as the 2000s, not many people had the opportunity to fly.

    F. That’s why the seats must be designed in a way to look clean all the time.

    G. But blue is a calm color associated with the positive qualities of trust and peace.

On a weekend, a woman won a big bag of coins at a game machine. She took a break for dinner with her husband in the hotel dining room. But first she wanted to put the coins in her room.

“I’ll be right back and we’ll go to eat,” she told her husband. Then she carried the bag to the lift. As she was about to walk into the lift she noticed two men already aboard.

Both were huge, very huge figures. The woman was scared. Her first thought was: “These two are going to rob me.” Her next thought was: “Don’t be afraid. They look like nice gentlemen.”

But fear seized her. She stood and stared at the two men. She felt anxious and ashamed. She hoped they didn’t read her mind. Surely they knew her hesitation about joining them in the lift. It was all too obvious. Her face was red. She couldn’t just stand there, so with an effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the lift. Avoiding eye contact, she turned around and faced the lift doors as they closed.

A second passed, and then another second, and then another. Her fear increased! The lift didn’t move. Panic consumed her. “Oh dear,” she thought, “I’m about to be robbed!”

Her heart sank and sweat poured. Then one of the men said, “Hit the floor.” Instinct (本能) told her: Do what they tell you. The bag of coins flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the lift carpet. A shower of coins rained down on her. “Take my money and spare me,” she prayed. More seconds passed.

She heard one of the men say politely, “Madam, if you’ll just tell us what floor you’re going to, we’ll push the button.” The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out. He couldn’t help laughing.

Para. 1She lifted her head and looked up at the two men.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para. 2Then, the lift arrived at her floor.
