Passage1
Rajendra Singh is considered a hero in the state of Rajasthan, India, for single-handedly saving five rivers that had been dried up for decades.
Singh, who studied Ayurvedic medicine at college, had always dreamed of becoming a farmer. So when he moved to Rajasthan's Alwar district in 1985, he was interested in curing not just his people, but also the region's ecosystem.
Singh noticed that most villagers had left their homes after the local Arvari River had dried up, and the only people who remained were either too old or too poor to move elsewhere. Singh, driven by a strong desire to help the villagers, took on the task of bringing water back to those lands.
For two years, Singh worked tirelessly, building johads (rainwater storage tanks built with stone, dirt, or whatever materials are available) and checking dams that didn't result in much success. Local elders laughed at him, but he continued working with enthusiasm. And his enthusiasm proved infectious-seeing he was sincere in wanting to help bring water back to their lands, the locals soon began to give money and offer suggestions on appropriate locations to build more dams and johads.
Finally his strategy worked. It wasn't long before the Arvari River came back to life, along with four other rivers. People who had abandoned the districts slowly began to move back home, returning to their traditional way of life.
Inspired by his success, Singh runs a non-profit organization called Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS), through which he helps thousands of people solve problems of water shortage. Since the 1980s, TBS has built over 4,500 johads that collect rainwater in 850 villages in 11 districts in India.

Passage3
My mother always said, “You young men should explore your own country before stepping out into the world.” It seemed like a tough task. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July in 2017.I jumped at the opportunity and secured an inexpensive ticket.
Excitement was at its peak as I approached the train station on the morning when my 22-day adventure was to begin. I jumped on board the passenger vessel (车厢)like it was the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. The train headed west in search of our first destination — the scenic town of Banff, Alberta. After just an hour on the train, desperation already came on me. The thought of three full days on those tracks broke my spirits. As I gazed out towards Lake Superior’s glistening (闪闪发亮)waves, I decided if I was to be stuck in here, I would need to enjoy my time.
Those three days turned into a summer camp on rails. Real friendships with the crew were born within that train. Stops were made in small, remote railroad villages. A large group of strangers turned travelling companions would rush towards the villages to reward our endless patience with local cuisine. At night, we would walk to the glass-domed (玻璃穹顶)train car, which gave a scenic view of the night sky, untouched by light pollution.
After three days, we arrived in Banff. Before my adventure of taking the train across Canada, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. But that is no longer true. I’ve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

Passage5
Since the age of three, Chelsie Hill had dreamed of becoming a dancer. That ambition nearly ended in 2010 when Hill was in a car accident, which put the 17- year-old high school senior in hospital for 51 days and left her paralyzed from the waist down. For most people, that would have destroyed any hope of a dancing career. But for Hill, it was the beginning. Far from being a barrier, her wheelchair encouraged her to fight. “I want to prove to everyone including myself that I'm still normal,” she said, “whatever normal means.”
Normal for her meant dancing, so Hill did it in her wheelchair alongside her nondisabled high school dance team. Half of her body was taken away from her, so she had to move it with her hands. It took much learning and patience.
After graduation from high school, Hill wanted to expand her dance network to include women like her. She met people online who were fighting for the dream of dancing against various spinal (脊椎的) injuries, and invited them to dance with her. To reach more people in a larger city, Hill moved to Los Angeles in 2014 and formed a team of dancers with disabilities she called the Rollettes.
Every year Hill holds a dance camp called the Rollettes Experience for wheelchair users to help them bring out their acting talent. In 2019, 173 participants from ten countries attended. For many, it was the first time they’d felt they belonged. Edna Serrano said that being part of the Rollettes team gave her the courage to get behind the wheel of a car. “I didn't know I could do so many things that my fellow teammates had taught me.” she said. “I didn’t know I could be sexy. It’s so powerful to have my teammates in my life, because they're my teachers. I have more confidence.”

Passage7
One of the most important things that has happened to me occurred long before I was aware of it. As the story goes, I was three days old and Mom was singing “The Name Game” song to me: “Christine Bo-Bean-Banana-Fanna-Fo-Feen.” By day four, I was given a new name—Christine-Bo-Bean, or just Bo-Bee to my mother. Now, I am Bo to her and close friends.
Why is this nickname(昵称)so important to me? I once read a book with a passage about True Names which explains that when a person’s true name is spoken, she has a distinct aura(光环)around her. Although I have been Bo to my mother all my life, I recently discovered that my true name is not on my birth certificate; it’s the name that is as unique and memorable as I am.
People usually know me as Christine. They still see me as a quiet, bookish child. They don’t know who I am now. My most recent hopes, fears, goals, dreams and opinions escape their notice; it is easier to think of me as I was. In their minds, they have a box labeled “Christine” in which I fit neatly, and as Christine, I was content with the perfect packaging.
Those who call me Bo or Bo-Bee really know me. They remember who I was and realize I have changed. Bo is a tight squeeze in the old “Christine” boxes. The Bo I am is ever-changing, ever-growing and ever-learning.
When I was Christine, I was quiet, and easily scared. I feared groups, meeting new people and sharing my opinions. I was more comfortable with a book than my best friend. As Christine, I thought everyone was better than I was.
As Bo, I still love my books, but I want to discuss them. As Bo, my dream is to live where I can experience new things and meet new people. I dream about being alone on a stage lit by a single spotlight; I have that confidence now. I am equal to those I once saw as better than me.
A name shouldn’t make such a difference, but sometimes, when a person finds his or her True Name, they develop a new shine visible to friends, family and especially themselves.
I can’t always be Bo. Sometimes exposing myself is still scary and I feel too nervous; I want to hide in those old boxes. Mostly, however, I am ready for the world. So, just call me Bo.
4. When was the author given a nickname?
A. When she was three years old.
B. On the fourth day after she was born.
C. Seven days after she was born.
D. When she received the old “Christine” box.
5. What do the people know about the author as Christine?
A. They think the author is active and crazy.
B. They care about the author’s most recent feelings.
C. They don’t realize the author has changed.
D. They don’t know the author has changed her name.
6. What kind of person was the author in the past?
A. She showed no interest in reading.
B. She took pleasure in finding new things.
C. She loved reading and sharing books with friends.
D. She lacked confidence and preferred to be alone.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Bo—the True Name
B. A Unique Name
C. Remember the Past
D. The Meaning of Nickname

In 2005, the Haizes adopted them. Then, they moved to the UK when Joy was six and Miriam was seven. The girls discovered the wheelchair basketball through a chance conversation, which Mr. Haize had with a friend in 2011. They hadn't known wheelchair sports before, but Joy was hooked from the beginning.
While Miriam loved the sport, it took her a little longer to become a serious athlete. “I used to have really low self-respect,” she said. “It's only when Joy got into the Under 25s European Championships in 2013 that I started to take basketball seriously. It gave me a path to follow.” Miriam was then chosen to play at both regional trials and the Sainsbury's School Games in 2014. Of course, she earned herself a place at the famous GB Futures training camp. “GB Futures helped me a lot. It helped me take basketball to another level and learn more about the game and its history. It also helped me be more independent,” said Miriam. Meanwhile, Joy is currently the youngest player on the GB women's team — but she is making her mark on the international stage, having represented Great Britain in tournaments (锦标赛) all over the world.
The teenagers are now eager to encourage others to explore the world of wheelchair sports. “You should have confidence in yourself. That's the one thing to help you succeed. Having setbacks helped me grow into a person and player. No matter what people said to us, we just tried our best,” said the girls.

Passage9
Earlier this year, my husband and I were presented with the chance to make our home in an urban “micro” space. As we initially considered it, it seemed crazy. Would we even make it a week without going mad? Living room, kitchen, office, dining room, all in one small four-walled space.
There were a number of other potential options. We could move out into the suburbs like most people do in our extraordinarily expensive city and have a small yard maybe even a basement. But there was something about this neat “tiny” home that aroused our interest, which challenged us. We like to live differently from the crowd, to avoid what everyone else is doing “just because” everyone else is.
“Let’s try it for six months. If it makes us crazy, we’ll move. We can do anything for 6 months,” my husband said. It was challenging squeezing into the space at first, but then something caught us by surprise. We started having a ton of fun with our tiny space.
In the past, sometimes we had quite different ideas about which art or decorating style we found appealing. But here, in this tiny space, we found ourselves having a ton of fun exploring possible options. There’s no room for clutter(凌乱的东西), either. This is a gift!
It’s been 8 months, and we’re staying. Perhaps forever. When a space is this small, you don’t need to spend much in furnishing it, and you can’t keep endlessly buying things. There’s nowhere to put them!
This leaves us more financial resources and more time to go out into the much bigger world and enjoy life. For us, living in a “tiny” home has filled us with a feeling of abundance. It’s so much better than feeling weighed down, paying for a big space and more and more things. I highly recommend it.
24. What can we learn from the words of the author’s husband?

A. She could enjoy life more. B. She could avoid the crowds.

Passage10
Go. Stop. Go. Stop. The travel signals in my head were conflicting. “Are you sure you want to head to Greece this November with Kathleen?” asked my husband. “The weather could be unpleasant.”
“You must go,” said my friend Larry, who talked about having spent Thanksgiving on Santorini. “It’s a wonderland. ”
With his encouraging words, I booked our flights to Athens and included two Greek islands: Santorini and Grete.
A sunny Saturday afternoon welcomed us to Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens. During the next few days Kathleen and I tried a lot of unknown-to-us foods. No annoying lines of tourists either as we saw sights on the Athens “A” list.
And then came Wednesday. The flight to Santorini was yo-yoed by wind gusts of up to 40 miles an hour. Fira, usually a much-photographed tourist destination, was chilly, rainy... empty. With rain beating our faces, Kathleen and I headed for our hotel and checked in for a three-night stay.
“This isn’t how I want to spend my holiday,” said Kathleen. “Maybe Crete isn’t experiencing the same storm. Can we fly out later today? ”
Her question mirrored my own thoughts. But we couldn’t leave. We’d just arrived. Payments for the hotel and rental car would be lost, and costly last-minute plane reservations needed. “Let’s not decide right now,” I suggested.
During the next few days, we drove around despite the showers. At a restaurant named Poseidon, on our third night, we waited and waited for dinner. “Your dinner will be out shortly. The chef was busy studying something beautiful,” our waiter explained.
Seeing our puzzled look, the waiter then said, “He went out for a smoke, saw a beautiful girl and began to chat…”
Suddenly, Kathleen laughed. Instead of complaining, she leaned back and out came a loud, happy sound.
An attitude adjustment into grace, I realized, had been happening since our arrival. “You know, Mum, you can’t live a positive life with a negative mind,” she said.
Grace surrounds us. The challenge is to let go of anxieties and worries, the tendency to complain. A sunny attitude can let grace shine.

Passage12
Summer has finally started. I walked outside my house to smell the hot air of the summer of 2019. We were leaving for Panama City Beach in the 6-hour drive. I had never met the twelve cousins I have on my mom's side of the family before and I was kind of nervous to see them. Finally, we reached the Emerald Coast. The whole family of 18 people were all sharing one four- bedroom house right on the water.
It was almost dinner time and by that time I had been observing the family. Everyone was running around the house yelling and trying to figure out dinner. It was only the first night and I already didn't like this family. After dinner, everyone went to bed. I was glad it was bedtime because now I could get some peace and quiet.
The next morning I got up before everyone else. I looked out of the giant window at the ocean. I watched carefully as the waves crashed against the sand and watched early risers hanging up their beach towels. All I wanted to do was go to the beach,After about an hour I started getting ready to go to the beach with my mom.
Walking down the walkway to the beach, I had particles of sand on my feet. I was so excited that I ran to our beach chairs, threw on my glasses, and jumped into the ocean. After a moment in the water, I noticed my surroundings. I was alone in the area of water I was in. For the next few hours, I played in the sand. I made sandcastles, buried my feet, dug a hole, and made a wall. It was a lot of fun, I then heard my mom yell my name. I turned and looked at her and she told me it was time to go. Passage13
When I heard that Vitaminwater is giving away $100,000 in a contest where the winner has to give up their cellphone for a year in favor of a 1996-era app-free version, my immediate thought was: I could never do that. Even a day would be very difficult for me. I admit that I'm addicted to my iPhone.
I sleep with it under my pillow. It's the first thing I reach for in the morning. I've never counted how many times I pick it up during the day, but it's at least several per hour, and often I can't go 5 minutes without looking at it.
What am I doing on my phone? Everything, it feels like: making to-do lists, searching for random information, checking e-mails and so on. I've also become attached to social media because somehow it's become vital that I know exactly what my childhood best friend’s cousin is doing.
I know the importance of communication in theory. But in practice, I've been scolded more times than I can count by my boyfriend, "You love your phone more than me.” I feel anxious when my phone isn't easily within reach, like life is happening without me. My already high general level of anxiety increases if I don't feel as informed as I can possibly be. I'm tricked by my phone’s simplicity. I'll just look at it while I'm in the bathroom or waiting in line at a store. Those few minutes that seem harmless enough likely represent the whole days’ worth of time when I could have been reading books or simply letting my mind relax.
The possibility of going even a day without my smartphone fills me with fear. And yet it upsets me that I've become completely dependent on this technological advancement.
So, on second thoughts, I'm going to enter the contest. And even if I don't win, I promise to limit my phone usage to 15 minutes a day in May, for a start. So this May, I'm going conservative. I hope I remember how.
5. How did the author react when hearing about the contest?
A. She declared it would be meaningless.
B. She decided to participate in it eagerly.
C. She thought it would be a challenge for her.
D. She was quite confident of winning a great prize.

A. It gets her dependent on her cellphone.
B. It makes her do shopping online easily.
C. It helps her keep in touch with her friends.
D. It gives her an easy way to get information.
7. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Getting Addicted To Cellphone
B. Entering Cellphone-free Contest
C. Bringing Cellphone Under Control
D. Laying Down Cellphone For Contest

Passage14
When you are sitting in the car, do you ever notice the drivers looking over their shoulders or side to side in the car? Well, they are doing this to check their blind spots! Blind spots make driving extremely difficult and increase the potential for car accidents.
Fourteen year old Alaina Gassler from Pennsylvania noticed her mother struggling with blind spots while driving their family car. So she came up with an ingenious solution that won the first place and $ 25,000 in the Broadcom Masters Competition.
Blind spots are the areas around the car that cannot be directly observed by the driver. There are two kinds of blind spots- on the back of the car that cannot be seen with mirrors, and blind spots at the front of the car as well.
When a driver is changing lanes, he has to look over his shoulder through the side windows to make sure that there is no vehicle in the blind spot. This invisible area is big enough to hide a car!
The other blind spot is created in the front by the A-pillar (柱子)- the material on either side on the windshield (挡风玻璃) that holds the glass and forms the frame of the car. In some cars, this pillar can be quite thick. Usually, people or cyclists can be hidden by this pillar.
Alaina's design was to get rid of the blind spot created by the front A-pillar of the car,the one that helps hold up the windshield.
She put a camera on the outside passenger side of the car which then sent the photos to a projector above the driver's head. Then, she covered the inside of the pillar in a reflective fabric onto which the image was projected, Basically, her device made the pillar ''see through'' and removed the blind spot on that side of the car.
Alaina's solution is very creative and could be improved by using LCD displays that will make it easier to see during day time as well.
8. What can be learned about blind spots during driving?
A. They cannot be get rid of. B. They make driving thrilling.
C. They call for careful driving. D. They cannot be indirectly seen by drivers.
9. What does the underlined word ''ingenious'' in paragraph 2 mean?

10. How did Alaina solve the problem?
A. By improving the A- pillar. B. By using a camera to capture images.
C. By replacing LCD displays in the cars. D. By using a mirror on the outside of the A-pillar.
11. What's the best title for the text?
A. An Introduction to Blind Spots. B. A Warning About the Road Safety.
C. Scientific Research on Blind Spots. D. A Teen's Creative Solution to Blind Spots.

By using a camera to capture images.(通过使用照相机捕捉画面)符合以上说法,故选B项。
11.D 主旨大意题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其是最后一段的Alaina's solution is very creative and could be improved by using LCD displays that will make it easier to see during day time as well.(阿莱娜的解决方案非常有创意,可以通过使用LCD显示器来改进,这样白天也容易看到)可知,本文主要介绍了14岁少年阿莱那对汽车A柱的改进,解决了驾驶员在驾车过程中的盲点问题的故事。D. Passage15
Last May I was hired by a large government agency. I had seven coworkers and a boss, Mrs. King. Our job was to sort huge amounts of mail into four hundred slots( 位置). We delivered the mail out of grocery carts we wheeled from office to office, picking up outgoing mail as we went along. Each mail delivery took an entire half-day to sort and deliver.
My troubles began almost as soon as I arrived. I was horrified to see that the slots were labeled not with people’s names but with their initials. Without thinking, I asked why this was a good idea, only to receive a sharp glance from Mrs. King. So I repeated the question. This time Mrs. King told me not to question what I didn’t understand. It was the first of many such exchanges, and I hadn’t been on the job a half-hour. The longer I worked at the job, the more I saw how inefficient all the procedures were, from delivery routes to times for coffee breaks.
When I asked Mrs. King about the procedures, however, she always reacted the same way. I continued with it over the next seven weeks, but my efforts were fruitless, even counterproductive.
Two months later, I was fired. I objected, of course. The personnel manager asked me if I had ever heard of the barnyard pecking order: the top chicken pecks on the one below it, the second pecks on the third, and so on all the way down the line to the lowliest chicken, whose life is a constant misery. Mrs. King, the manager said, was that lowliest chicken at the bottom of the pecking order in the agency’s management. No one should doubt for a moment that she ruled her rooster.
I reflected upon my adventure in the agency. Eventually I saw how arrogant, and how unsympathetic, my behavior had been. In my next job, I ’ll learn the pecking order before I become a reformer, if I do.
