The annual award includes a grant of US $100, 000.

    AIA Gold Medal
The American Institute of Architects (AIA), founded in 1857, runs more than thirty award programs, with the Gold Medal being the most famous and prestigious. This is awarded annually to an individual, or a pair, whose work has created an influential legacy both practically, and also through architectural theory.

For people born into the Russian aristocracy (贵族)in the nineteenth century, life was full of interesting opportunities——unless they were female. At the time, women generally did not have careers, for they were expected, instead, to focus fully on marrying and raising families. Sophia Behrs was one such young woman. When Sophia married Leo Tolstoy (列夫•托尔斯泰), he was already a well-known author. Both the couple were literary in their interests: Sophia had been a gifted student and, even at a very young age, was a keen and sensitive reader.
Sophia’s marriage to Tolstoy gave her the opportunity to put her abilities as a good reader to use, often advising him on his work throughout the writing process. She served as her husband’s copyist, writing out multiple copies of his novels by hand. She made suggestions for and edits to his work, many of which were incorporated into the final product. In addition, she served as his manager, publicist, and agent, keeping track of the financial and legal sides of her husband’s writing career. If Sophia were alive today, she might have found her calling at a publishing house or literary-agency.
She wrote her own Russian-language grammar textbook and translated texts from German and English. She also wrote fiction, including a revision of Le’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata. In that story, a man recounts the dramatic breakdown of his marriage; Sophia retold the narrative from his wife’s point of view. The famous writer was impressed by his wife’s literary talents.“What force of truth and simplicity!”He wrote in his diary upon reading one of her stories.
However, Sophia never sought publication for her own work. Writing was not a fantasy that she look seriously; rather, she regarded it with “a certain contempt (轻蔑) and irony.”Limited by personal modesty, her domestic duties, and the expectations for women in her lifetime, Sophia never even considered seeking fame of her own. Yet Tolstoy would never have been able to produce the work he did without Sophia’s vital contributions.
    24. What advantages did Sophia’s marriage bring to her?
    A. A strong interest in literature.
    B. A superior sense of gracefulness.
    C. A profession at a literary agency.
    D. A chance to put her literary gift to use.
    25. What can be inferred about Sophia from Paragraph 3?
    A. Her revision of The Kreutzer Sonata was admirable.
    B. Her grammar textbook was easy and simple.
    C. She had a dramatic and imaginative writing style.
    D. She almost went through a marriage breakdown.
    26. Which of the following words best describe Sophia according to the last paragraph?
    A. Talented and selfless.
    B. Loving and ambitious.
    C. Thoughtful but strong-willed.
    D. Responsible but proud.
    27. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Sophia, a delayed publisher.
    B. Sophia, the other Tolstoy.
    C. Life of Tolstoy and Sophia.
    D. Literature on Russian women.
    C
The COVID crisis has led many scientists to take up arms (or at least keyboards) to defend their companies and to be sure, science needs defenders these days. But in their passion to fight back against vaccine(疫苗) rejection and other forms of science denial(否定), some scientists say things that just aren’t true.
One popular move is to insist that science is right—full stop—and that once we discover the truth about the world, we are done. Anyone who denies such truths ( they suggest) is stupid or ignorant. Even a modest familiarity with the history of science offers many examples of matters that scientists thought they had decided, only to discover that they needed to be reconsidered. Some familiar examples are Earth as the center of the universe, the absolute nature of time and space, the stability of continents, and the causes of infectious disease.
Science is a process of learning and discovery, and sometimes we learn that what we thought was right is actually wrong. Science can also be understood as an institution (or better, a set of institutions ) that promotes this work. To say that science is “true” or “permanent” is like saying that “marriage is permanent”. At best, it’s a bit off-key. Marriage today is adapted to a world that is very different from what it was in the 16th or l8th century, so are most of our “laws” of nature. They are at best, true for now or true until proven otherwise.
In my view, the biggest mistake scientist make is to claim that this is all somehow simple and therefore to imply that anyone who doesn’t get it is dumb. Yet science is not simple, and neither is the natural world where the greatest challenge of science communication lies.
Scientific theories are not perfect copies of reality, but we have good reasons to believe that they capture(捕获) significant elements of it. And experience reminds us that when we ignore reality, it sooner or later comes back to bite us.
    28. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
    A. What scientists said is absolutely trustworthy.
    B. Scientific findings call for further consideration.
    C. It is unwise to deny some truths scientists have found.
    D. Social common sense contributes to discovering a scientific theory.
    29. Why does the author compare science to marriage?
    A. Neither science nor marriage is reliable.
    B. Both science and marriage are true and permanent.
    C. Neither science nor marriage remains the same all the time.
    D. Both science and marriage can help us tell right from wrong.
    30. What can we know about scientific findings?
    A. They are always permanent.
    B. They can be proven by experiments.
    C. We should be ready for their changes.
    D. Different scientific methods reach more scientific findings.
    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. Are Scientists Dependable?
    B. Is Science Actually “Right”?
    C. Does Truth Really Function?
    D. What’s the Scientific Method?
    D
Digital assistants such as Siri are increasingly common on phones and computers. Developing an emotional relationship with a piece of software can, however, bring discomfort to some people.
As a study published in Psychological Science by Park Daeun, of Chungbuk National University in South Korea, and her colleagues, shows, one emotion sometimes involved in machine-human interaction is embarrassment.
Dr Park and her team recruited(招募) 187 participants into their study. To start with, each was presented with a series of statements like “you have a certain amount of intelligence, and you can’t really do much to change it”, and “you can always considerably change how intelligent you are”. Participants rated their responses to these statements on a six-point scale, on which one meant “strongly disagree” and six meant “strongly agree”. The reason for this initial test was that Dr. Park knew from previous work that, in academic settings, those who believe intelligence to be changeable are comfortable asking for assistance while those who believe it to be fixed often feel ashamed to do so.
The initial test done, the researchers presented their volunteers with a second test, which involved looking at 16 sets of three words and trying to think of a fourth word that linked them. For example, when offered “room, blood, salts” , a correct answer would be “bath”. Sometimes the first three words were accompanied by an unrequested hint (in the example given, this was “tub”). Sometimes they were not.
Hints appeared as the written form of the word in question, accompanied by a computer-shaped icon (图形). For half of participants this icon had a humanlike face, and the hint was placed inside a speech bubble originating from that face, thus anthropomorphising (赋予人性) the presentation to some degree. For the other half the icon lacked a face and there was no speech bubble. After the final set of words had been displayed, participants were asked to agree or disagree with follow-up statements about their experience, such as “it was embarrassing to receive help during the task”, and “others might think I am incompetent (无能的) because I received help during the task.” This time, they quantified their feelings on a seven-point scale, with high scores representing greater feelings of unease.
The researchers found that participants who believed intelligence to be unchangeable (the top sixth of the sample) felt more embarrassed and more incompetent after the tests. They averaged 3.2 when measured for feelings of shame and embarrassment if the computer icons they had seen giving the hints had had faces and speech bubbles. But only 2.7 if not. In contrast, people who strongly believed that intelligence could be changed over time (the bottom sixth of the sample) felt the same level of discomfort (around 2.5) whether or not the icons had been anthropomorphised.
    32. The initial test is meant to classify the participants according to ________.
    A. how intelligent they are in academic settings
    B. how much they agree with Dr Park’s viewpoint
    C. how much they believe intelligence is unchangeable
    D. how familiar they are with previous research
    33. In the second test, the participants were required to ________.
    A. request a useful hint at a proper time
    B. link the four words given with a key word
    C. tell computer-shaped icons from face-shaped ones
    D. answer whether they feel comfortable to receive help
    34. What can be inferred from the results of Dr. Park and his team’s study?
    A. Those regarding intelligence as fixed are more likely to feel embarrassed in real life.
    B. Those who believe intelligence can change are more likely to refuse computers’ assistance.
    C. Those regarding intelligence as fixed may feel less at ease when turning to computers.
    D. Those who believe intelligence can change are more capable than those who don’t.
    35. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
    A. How machine-human interaction will develop remains to be seen.
    B. Sometimes, computer programs seem too human for their own good.
    C. People need to change their understanding of artificial intelligence.
    D. So far, the digital assistants have not taken human emotion into account.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Why should we explore space? Perhaps the best answer lies in our history. What made our ancestors move from the trees onto the plains? 36 In exploring, the surrounding areas may be identified and prepared for. Without knowledge, these dangers have the ability to harm us.
While many resources are spent on what seems a small return, the exploration of space allows new resources to be created. 37 Knowledge or techniques acquired in exploring or preparing to explore always filter (慢慢传开) from the developers to the general population. Techniques may be medical applications, such as new drugs or ways of living to increase the quantity or the quality of time lived.
By studying alien worlds, we can place our own world in content. While space may hold many wonders and explanations of how the universe was formed or how it works, it also holds dangers. The chance of a large asteroid (小行星) hitting the Earth is small.
    38
Some explanations for extinctions and evolution include strikes by asteroids. Our technology is reaching the point where we can detect such a threat and might be able to do something about it.
39 Without the ability to reach out across space, the chance to save ourselves might not exist. Earth is the only planet known to maintain life, but our ability to adapt could eventually allow us to inhabit other planets and moons.
Our lifestyles would be different, but human life and cultures have adapted in the past and surely could in the future. 40
    A. But given time, it will happen.
    B. Space allows us to expand and succeed.
    C. Resources translate into success at survival.
    D. With knowledge, their consequences may be reduced.
    E. Nearly all successful civilizations have been willing to explore.
    F. Scientists can function at world-class level in their specialist fields.
    G. The dangers exist and knowledge can allow us as a species to survive.

    书面表达
In an attempt to enrich students' school life and build up our body, a Sports Festival will be scheduled to take place in our school stadium on April 1st,which,I bet,is definitely an event that nobody wants to miss.
The coming festival, with the theme of “Sports and Health” will serve as a platform to show our talents for sports and cultivate our interest in sports. Based on such a meaningful theme, the festival will consist of various activities, ranging from group competitions such as the tug-of-war to the solo ones like a half-marathon race. Additionally, several distinguished health professionals will be invited to give a lecture concerning how to do daily exercise appropriately after all the competitions.
Every class is supposed to submit your application forms to the Students' Union Office before March 25th. So significant is it that I firmly believe every participant will achieve something amazing.

    录音原文
    第一节
    Text 1
W:What do you think of this dress?
M:Hmm...I still think you look better in warmer colors. That blue doesn't suit you as much as yellows and oranges that you usually wear.(1)
    Text 2
W:How did you get into the cartoon industry?
M:Well,I knew I wanted to write, but I never had the patience for novels. I loved to draw and I would cut the cartoon figures out of newspapers before I could read them!(2)
    Text 3
M:I'm going to make a speech!
W:Oh no, please don't! I still remember the speech you made at Emma's wedding during last
    national holiday!
M:Hey,my little sister only turns 21 once. We have to celebrate it in style!(3)

    Text 4
M:The Internet offers us plenty of ways of learning, like videos.
W:I know, but I prefer to go to a library and read books.(4)

    Text5
    W:Did you enjoy the movie?
M:Yeah,it was good. But there were some people behind us who were talking loudly and eating snacks the whole time.
Eventually,I was angry, and the cinema staff asked them to leave..(⑤)

    Text 6
    M:Where shall we sit?
W:What about under the trees over there? This sun is too strong for me.
M:Fine with me. I'm happy anywhere, as long as we're not too close to the children's play
park. It's so noisy over there!
W:What have you brought for your picnic?(6)(7)
M:Just some boring sandwiches. I was hoping to have some noodles left over from dinner last night,(7)but my sister finished them off!
W:I just got a salad from the supermarket on my way here.
    M:That's okay. It's still nice to have a picnic!(6)
    W:Definitely.

    Text7(第8题为推断题)
    W:Enjoy your little holiday?)
    M:Oh,ha-ha!Have I missed much?
W:Not really, assuming you've done all the homework Miss Baker sent?
M:Yes,I've done the reading for English and finished the math homework. It would be great if you went through this new history project with me.(9)
W:Sure!Let's go to the library after lunch, and I'll explain.
    M:Thanks.
    W:So,how's the leg?(10)
    M:Improving.It doesn't hurt much anymore.(10)
W:I've never broken a bone before. Was it awful?
M:Honestly,I didn't really feel the pain until later. At the time, I was just sick over the fact
I had to leave the field when the team were losing by nine points!
    W:Football is a dangerous sport!
    M:It sure is!

    Text8(第11题为推断题)
W:Do you have any plans for Mother's Day?(12)
M:Yes,my brother and I are taking my mom and eating her to a meal
W:Oh,that's nice. I did something similar last year. My mom and I went out for tea and
cakes at a fancy hotel in Beijing.
M:What are you doing this year?(12)
W:Not sure yet.(12)She's always wanted to learn traditional Chinese calligraphy(书法)and I've found a great place where she can stay for a full weekend and take classes.
    M:That sounds exciting!
W:But my aunt thinks my mom would be sad not to spend the actual day with me. She's probably right. She thinks I should take my mom to get beauty treatments, instead. I don’t know
M:Why not go for beauty treatments on Mother's Day itself,(13)and also arrange for
your mom to have calligraphy lessons another weekend?
    W:Great idea!(13)

    Text9(第14题为推断题)

M:I'm here talking with the film's director, Kathleen Tate.
    W:Hi,how are you?
M:I'm good. Big night for you, first showing of your new film.
    W:I know. I'm so nervous.
M:Well, you can't tell. You look like a million dollars.
W:That's almost how much this dress cost the studio!
M:The film is shown to the production team for the first time tonight. When can the public see it?
W:So here in America and Canada it will be into cinemas on the 20th of April, and then one week later in Europe.(15)
M:The film has very international actors from China and Brazil. When can people in their
    countries expect to see it?
W:It's set to be shown in China on the 7th of June. We're going over and doing a press tour
    of South East Asia.
    M:And what about South America?(16)
W:Fortunately,we've been permitted to show in the region, and now we're looking for
    proper cinemas.(16)
M:Well, thanks for stopping to chat to us. Enjoy the film.

    W:Always a pleasure.

    Text10(第17题为总结题)

And now, in local news, a small, decorated bowl bought at a New Haven yard sale last year has recently been sold at Sotheby's for more than 20,000 times its original price.(18)The bowl was a lucky find by a man, who paid just $35 for the piece. He obviously assumed there was something special about this bowl, because he later emailed photographs to experts at Sotheby's,(19)asking its possible value.
The experts quickly determined that the bowl was from ancient China, dating back to the Ming Dynasty of the early 1400s.Only six bowls of this kind are known to exist in the whole world, and almost all are in museums in Taipei and London.
They said that it was worth between 300,000 and 500,000 dollars as part of Sotheby's Important Chinese Art sale, the bowl went beyond the range and it reached an amazing $721,800.(20)
Sotheby's experts date the bowl to the time of the Yongle Emperor, who ruled China from 1403 to 1424. After hearing about this story, I for one will definitely be keeping my eyes open at the next yard sale I go to!
