Adrian Rodriquez found the purse outside a supermarket in Chula Vista, CA. Using the address on the driver’s license(驾照)inside the purse, Adrian drove to the house and knocked on the front door.
The purse belonged to Eliana Martin, a former(以前的)roommate of Melina Marquez. Martin had not changed her address since her recent move, so the purse was brought to Marquez’s home.
Marquez was not at home when Adrian arrived. He left it with a relative at the house, and their dialogues were recorded by Marques’s camera by chance. “I looked into the camera later, and I thought to myself, ‘Oh my dear. He’s such a young kid. We need to find him and thank him,’” recalled Marquez. She posted the video of Adrian on the Internet and the Chula Vista community quickly went to work.
“I woke up and I had a lot of messages like, ‘Oh. is this you?’” Adrian said. The ladies invited him to Marquez’s house so Martin could say thanks in person. After they knew the boy s poor family, they also started a GoFundMe page in his honor. The online fundraiser has received 677 donations(捐赠), totaling $15,145.
“It feels good. I appreciate it. I really do everything everybody’s doing,” Adrian told NBC News, “My mom always told me since I was little to always do the right thing when nobody’s around.”

Scientists developed vaccines(疫苗)against a new disease in less than 12 months. And yet, 18 months after the first of these vaccines, against COVID-19, were put on the market, just 15% of people in developing countries have been fully vaccinated. Such unfairness costs lives and uncovers a long-standing problem that some countries have been forced to depend on others for life-saving science and technology. It is unacceptable, for example, that in Africa, a continent of 54 independent countries and 1.2 billion people, 99% of vaccines are from other countries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is searching for a way to get vaccines to more people more easily. Last year, the WHO started a program called the mRNA vaccine technology center. The goal of the program is to develop and produce mRNA vaccines and treatments (for COVID-19 and other diseases) in developing countries from the technology used in developed countries’ highly successful COVID-19 vaccines.
More importantly, the cooperation(合作)between universities and companies based in developing countries is needed to realize the goal. On July 8th, the USA National Institutes of Health, where much of the research on mRNA vaccines was carried out, joined this program to help build vaccine technology centers in developing countries.
Besides the necessity of fairness, outbreaks would end sooner if every country could depend on its own defence. As Larry Brilliant, a scientist of the US National Institutes of Health who helps wipe out smallpox(天花), told Nature, “Fairness is often thought of as a burden(负担), but it is a strategic need in the battle against COVID-19.”
    28. Why does the author mention Africa in paragraph 1?
    A. To lead in the topic.
    B. To show the unfairness in vaccines.
    C. To stress the importance of vaccines.
    D. To say thanks to the help from developed countries.
    29. Why did the WHO start the program?
    A. To make more people in developing countries get vaccines.
    B. To build up a center to attract experts in developing vaccines.
    C. To get the technology used in successful COVID-19 vaccines.
    D. To strengthen the cooperation between universities and companies.
    30. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
    A. Fairness is a burden, so it is not necessary.
    B. We Il win the battle sooner if every country has its defence.
    C. Fairness is necessary because it can stop COVID-19 from breaking out.
    D. Wiping out smallpox is a strategic need in the battle against COVID-19.
    31. What is the most suitable title for the text?
    A. Why fairness is necessary?
    B. How did WHO start the program?
    C. How did scientists develop vaccines?
    D. Why is a vaccine center for developing countries a must?
    D
Fiji has become the first cour.try in the Pacific to recognize “waste pickers”, who collect, repurpose and sell rubbish, as environmental champions.
Who are “waste pickers”? These workers are usually women, children and migrants(移民)living in bad conditions. The job comes with many health risks, as workers are exposed to pollutant and poisonous materials, and those who work at open dumps(垃级场)face risks caused by trucks, fires and surface falls.
They remove millions of tons of CO, each year from landfills, yet they are often looked down on and treated poorly. Talking to ABC News, Tikitoro from Fiji said that her children are made fun of at school. “The students laugh and point at them,” she shared.
How is Fiji responding? On July 20, 2022, in Lautoka, Fiji recognized the environmental benefits that these workers are providing. Thirty women who take part in informal waste picking were officially registered, given bank accounts and provided with protective gear to make their jobs safer.
A new name was also created for these workers: Collection Pillars of Recycling. The name came from a workshop organized with International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and the Pacific Recycling Foundation.
Amitesh Deo, founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, told the Fiji Sun, “Their workshop was about human rights, education, legal literacy and financial literacy. One of the key findings in that workshop was the stigma(污名)attached to waste picking, and one of the contributors to the stigma was the name ‘informal waste pickers’.”
With around 20 million people picking waste for a living around the world, it is important that they are treated with respect and recognized for the highly valuable work that they do.
    32. What could be said about the work of picking waste?
    A. It’s fruitless. B. It’s not deserving.
    C. It’s dangerous. D. It’s meaningless.
    33. How has Tikitoro’s work affected her?
    A. She has been looked down on.
    B. She has learned new life skills.
    C. She has gained a sense of achievement.
    D. She has developed a strong personality.
    34. What does the underlined word “gear” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Experiment. B. Equipment. C. Color. D. Effect.
    35. What may Amitesh Deo say about the name “informal waste pickers”?
    A. It takes years to form.
    B. It should be formally named.
    C. It is popular nationwide.
    D. It needs to be forgotten.

What Are Some Good Study Skills
Good habits are developed over time and trained through practice. It isn’t possible to learn every single study skill in a single study. It is, however, helpful to know what specific skills that good students use. 36 .
    Studying Usefully
It may sound obvious, but studying usefully is among the most important of all study skills. 37 . Though there are plenty of examples of such ones online, a simple memory skill is to create an abbreviation(缩写), To remember the order of the north, east, south, and west directions, for example, kids are sometimes encouraged to remember the laughable abbreviation “never eat soggy waffles”.
    Reading Actively
Though most students understand how to read, reading to get information can be much harder. One way to make the brain remember better is to mark at least one key phrase per paragraph of reading material. 38 . And it shouldn’t simply be given up as something useless.
To add extra power to reading, many careful students write notes beside the sentences about any questions or misunderstandings they may have about the material(材料). Others simply write out connections or ideas that come about.
    Using Test-Taking Skills
39 . Multiple-choice tests are an effective(有效的)way. Crossing off unlikely answers, for example, can improve students’ chances of guessing correctly without any more research. Another skill is to give up the unclear and search for the answer later in the test. There are many other simple ways, and each can help remove test worry and improve grades.
    Understanding Sources(信息来源)
The world of today is full of poor information. 40 . Unluckily, students are often taught far too late how to find well-thought-of scientific writings online. However, the earlier kids learn about these small differences, the better.
    A. This tells the brain that the material is important
    B. Students are able to score the best on these sorts of tests
    C. Useful research skills do not come naturally to most students
    D. Taking tests effectively is a very useful skill for students of any age
    E. The most useful study way is making use of one or more memory skills
    F. Here are some good study skills that are very helpful to you
    G. And this makes sorting good sources out from bad ones all the more important

Sal Garfield was having a bad day. He had been busy making cakes since 3 am. And now, his employee(雇员)who should take over the shop for the afternoon had just called in sick(请假).
Sal was an artist in making cakes. No one could make cakes like him, but he wasn’t a person who is good at talking to others. He dealt with several hateful(令人讨厌的)customers that morning, so when Janie, a nine-year-old girl, walked in, he was already very angry. Janie placed her little hands against the glass as she looked at the delicious cakes. “Hey, kid!” Sal shouted. “Don’t put your hands on the glass! I just cleaned it!” Janie jumped back and said sorry. “Everything looks so delicious! My mom says you make the best red velvet(丝绒)cake in the world,” Janie smiled. Sal felt happy about the praise.
“I want to buy a birthday cake,” Janie said and reached out her hand. There were many coins that didn’t come to more than a few dollars. She said she wanted to buy a red velvet cake. But Sal replied, “I hope you have more than those three or four dollars, kid! That cake costs $70!” Janie was shocked, and hoped she could buy just a slice(薄片)since she didn’t have any more money.
“Kid,” Sal answered, “you can’t even afford a slice!” Janie almost cried. She pointed at other cakes, asking whether she could buy one of the cheapest. Sal shook his head.
Janie was so sad. She wanted to buy a birthday cake for her mom, who had got seriously ill. Sal’s red velvet cake was her mom’s favorite. Janie wanted to buy one to surprise and cheer her mom up. Knowing she couldn’t even afford one of any other birthday cakes, Janie started crying, “Please, air. You don’t understand…” Sal lost his patience, shouting, “Get out! Try somewhere else!” Janie ran out and sat on a chair outside of the door, crying sadly. Just then, an old lady walked past.

W: Oh. hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting, I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

M: Hello, I am David. I am 17 years old and I go to high school in a small town. I am really interested in science, but I find math and English a bit hard. My dad owns a store and he sells farm tools. We live in the countryside about four miles from school, so my school bus picks me up every morning. My uncle has a farm, I spend every Sunday helping out there. It is hard work but really enjoyable. On Monday, I go to Young Farmer Group. I learn things like how to look after animals there. Of course I want to work in the countryside when I leave school. I wouldn’t like to live in a city and sit in an office all day. My father thinks I should work in his business, but I want to have my own farm one day, My mother says I have to go to college at first, so I am going to work hard to pass all the exams.

    参考范文:
    Dear Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you and your best friend have been drifting apart since you entered senior high school. But take it easy. To help you save your friendship, here is my advice.
Firstly, If you can’t make it to meet each other face to face frequently like before, it might be a good idea for you to keep in touch by texting regularly, Moreover, it is equally important to make time for you to have a meal together or simply do something fun with him.
I hope the suggestions above will work for you.
    Yours,
    Li Hua
    第二节
    参考范文:
The old lady sopped to ask Janie, “Sweetie, are you OK?” Janie shook her head. She expressed her sadness for not having enough money to buy her sick mom a birthday cake. Hearing what had happened to the girl’s mother, the old lady couldn't help hugging Janie, comforted her, and decided to do something for her. She reached into her pocket, pulled out some money, and handed it to Janie. Then she led the girl back to the cake store.
Overhearing their conversation, Sal felt regretful for his behavior just now. When Janie walked back in, Sal greeted her with a warm smile this time. “I’m sorry, kid,” Sal said. “You can choose any cake for your mother for free.” Though surprised, Janie’s face lit up and she thanked Sal a lot. Janie walked carefully to the glass window, watching the red velvet cake that she had been looking forward to. Without any delay, Sal packed up the cake beautifully and handed it to Janie, saying, “Best wishes to your mother, kid!” Janie smiled and believed everything would be alright.
