Have you ever shaken on a cold day? You may not have noticed, but as you shake, your body warms up. Shaking is one way your body stays warm. It happens when messages are sent from the nervous system(神经系统) to the muscles(肌肉). This is how it works.
The nervous system has two parts. One part is the nerves(神经). They look like long and thin lines. Their job is to carry messages to all parts of the body. The spinal cord(脊髓) and the brain make up the other part of the nervous system. Messages from the brain travel down the spinal cord. They go to the rest of the body through the nerves. Then the muscles will receive these messages.
Imagine you are waiting for a bus on a street corner. It’s a very cold day. The bus is late, and you feel cold. At this time, a control center in your brain senses that you’re cold. Then it transmits(传送) a message down the spinal cord to all the nerves. The message races through nerves that connect to other nerves. Then it goes from the nerves to the muscles. The message says,“Warning! Prepare for action!”
When a muscle moves, it makes heat. That is why you get warm when you run or play football. When your muscles get the message that you are cold, they get busy. First, they begin to tighten(收缩), then they relax. They tighten then relax over and over again. This makes you shake. A lot of heat is produced and you feel warmer.
( ) 31. How did the writer start this text?
A. By telling a story. B. By showing an event.
C. By giving an example. D. By asking a question.
( ) 32. What can we know about nerves(神经) according to the passage?
A. They lie in the spinal cord(脊髓) of the body.
B. Messages from the brain travel down them.
C. They can carry messages to all parts of the body.
D. They can only carry messages to the muscles in the body.
( ) 33. Which one can show the relationship between temperature of the weather and the frequency (频率) of your body’s shake? (F= Frequency, T= Temperature)
( ) 34. What is the structure (结构) of the text? (P= Paragraph)
( ) 35. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to keep warm in cold
B. The importance of learning about shaking
C. How shaking makes our bodies stay warm
D. The way to deal with shaking in winter
