What makes one a great person? The legendary volleyball coach Lang Ping gave the answer in the recent documentary The Iron Hammer, titled after her nickname for her powerful strikes.
The documentary features Lang' s inspiring journey from her gold medal victory as a volleyball player in the 1984 Olympics to her unparalleled (无可比拟的)career as a successful coach for both Team USA from 2005 to 2008 and China since 2013. She led the US to a silver medal finish and China to a gold medal triumph in the 2008 and 2016 Olympic Games, making her the first person to win Olympic volleyball gold as a player and coach.
Lang Ping revealed the secret to such remarkable achievements in the documentary. “I believe volleyball was my destiny," she said.
But success and challenges go hand in hand. Troubled by severe injuries to her cervical vertebra (颈椎),back, waist and knees, caused by intense exercise and hard work, the 60-year-old has undergone more than 10 surgeries. “No parts of my body function well," she joked.
But illness is certainly not the only difficulty Lang has faced throughout her career. In 2005, she struggled with balancing raising her daughter Lydia Bai Lang, who lived in the US, and her coaching career, according to China Sports Daily. She eventually decided to work for USA Volleyball that year and this decision aroused a lot of negative comments back in China.
“I'm proud of being Chinese.” Lang responded in an interview. Later, she returned to head the Chinese women 's volleyball team in 2013, leading the team successfully defending its World Cup crown with a perfect record of 11 straight wins last year.

Download an app, open it, place your order, and wait for your food to be delivered to your home – this is a picture of how many people eat in China these days. According to the latest data from the China Internet Network Information Center, 421 million Chinese people use online food delivery services. That’s equal to half of the total number of internet users in China.
Which group of people is ordering food online the most? Unsurprisingly, it’s mainly young people. A recent report that was jointly published by the China Hospitality Association and Meituan, a food delivery service, showed that 86.3 percent of the service’s users are between 20 and 34 years old. These people, who are more likely to live in small families, are the major force driving the development of the food delivery industry.
Small families depend greatly on food delivery services. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Chinese families have changed in size over the past decade. In 2002, only 7.7 percent of families were single-person households. But this number increased to 15.6 percent in 2017. The percentage of two-person families rose from 18.4 in 2002 to 27.2 in 2017. For small families, relatively, if people spend more time and resources in cooking, it’s a waste, so ordering food online has become more popular, which is so convenient.
The improvement of China’s food delivery services has also attracted more customers. According to Meituan’s report, the average time it takes to make a food delivery dropped from 38 minutes in 2016 to 29 minutes in 2019. Many delivery platforms are also offering more services, delivering products such as toys, fruits, vegetables, medicine and flowers, even furniture and electrical equipment and so on. As its services continue to improve, it’s more likely that the food delivery industry will keep growing.
    28. Which one is likely to use food delivery services the most in China?
    A. An old man.
    B. A single in his 20s.
    C. A high school student.
    D. A primary school student.
    29. What can you infer from the third paragraph?
    A. Small families prefer food delivery.
    B. Delivery services have improved a lot.
    C. Small households are more than big ones.
    D. Chinese people like ordering food after marriage.
    30. What is the best title of the passage?
    A. The Changes of Small Families.
    B. The Improvement of Living Standards.
    C. The Advantages of Food Delivery Platform.
    D. The Development of Food Delivery Industry.
    31. Where is this passage probably taken from?
    A. Newspaper. B. Novel. C. Tour guide. D. Science report.
    D
Nowadays, people begin to be aware the environment of ocean is becoming worse than before, so monitoring our ocean life becomes increasingly significant. However, observing sea creatures up close is almost impossible since human presence scares them. Now, thanks to The Soft Robotic Fish, also known as SoFi, researchers may be able to keep a close eye on the sea creatures.
Built by MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), the white remotecontrolled robot resembles the real fish, complete with a tail that waves from side to side. Though not the first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) created to monitor the ocean, SoFi settles many of the problems that have blocked the usefulness of the previous robotfish.
Previous AUVs have had to be linked to boats because radio frequency communications don't work well underwater. To overcome the problem, Director of the CSAIL Daniela Rus and her team used sound waves. The technology can travel greater distances allowing divers to pilot SoFi from up to 50 feet away.
Also limiting the usefulness of traditional AUVs is the risk of collision (碰撞). With the outside made of soft silicone (硅树脂) rubber and flexible plastic that keeps its inbuilt electronics dry, SoFi poses no such danger. A soft robot is not only more likely to survive a collision but also could use it as information to form a more workable movement plan next time around.”
During test dives, SoFi moved alongside the ocean life at depths of 50 feet for up to 40 minutes at a time, taking photos and making videos. The researchers say sometimes the fish would swim alongside the strangelooking robotfish out of curiosity, while at other times they took no notice of its existence.
While SoFi presently only records video, future versions will include sensors.
The researchers also hope to make it more autonomous. “We imagine someday it might help us uncover more secrets from the amazing underwater world that we know so little about.” says Rus.
    32. What does the writer think of SoFi?
    A. It is the first AUV. B. It is closely controlled.
    C. It scares sea animals away. D. It makes ocean exploration easier.
    33. What can we learn from Para.3?
    A. Sound waves travel faster than radio.
    B. A boat travels along with SoFi on the water.
    C. Sound waves work better than radio underwater.
    D. Previous AUVs use sound waves to communicate.
    34. How does SoFi deal with collision?
    A. By using inbuilt electronics.
    B. By limiting traditional AUV.
    C. By avoiding extra movement.
    D. By adjusting its movement path.
    35. What will happen to SoFi in the future?
    A. It will be much smarter.
    B. It will be free from control.
    C. It will solve underwater problems.
    D. It will take pictures and record videos.
    第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

How to Deal with Exam Stress?
Do you feel nervous when taking exams or do you have a nightmare waiting for exam results? 36 Don’t worry! There are some steps you can take to calm down and reduce your stress.
Take some deep breaths. Stress and anxiety can trigger your body’s “fight or flight” response, making your breaths shallow and rapid. 37 Put one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen (腹部). As you breathe, you should feel your abdomen expand along with your chest.
Try not to go over the exam straight afterwards. Some people find it comforting to talk to friends a little about what they wrote. However, it only makes you worry about the answers you can’t change. You will be unable to think clearly right after a stressful exam. 38
Get some exercise to relax. You might not feel like hitting the gym or going for a run directly after an exam, but getting some moderate physical activity is a great way to reduce stress! 39 If you’re stressed out over your exam, try doing exercise like jogging, cycling or even a quick walk. Regular exercise has been shown to decrease tension and improve your sleep.
40 Regardless of your results, you should celebrate the fact that you have worked hard on your exams. Reward yourself by doing something you enjoy. If you can do it with friends, all the better. Studies have shown that spending time with friends and loved ones is an excellent way to relieve stress and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

    A. Spend time with positive people.
    B. Do something enjoyable to relax.
    C. If so, that means you are under exam stress.
    D. Fight this stress response by taking deep breaths.
    E. You may feel like you perform much worse than you actually do.
    F. Whatever makes you laugh will help you sort out your post-exam stress.
    G. It can produce endorphins (内啡肽), which are natural painkillers that boost your mood.

    Dear Sir or Madam:
I’m Li Hua, a 16-year-old high school student from Beijing, China. Recently, knowing that you posted the information about the volunteer in the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games on the Internet, I am writing to apply for it.
Here are the main reasons why I am the best choice for you. First and foremost, I have a good command of English, especially my oral English, which allows me to communicate with native English speakers fluently. What’s more, my moral qualities, like kindness and patience, can be a great help for the voluntary work. The most important factor is that my former experience as a volunteer will undoubtedly enable me to offer wonderful service to foreign people.
I do believe that I am very qualified for this voluntary work. I would appreciate it if you could take my application into consideration. I am looking forward to your early reply.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    (Text 3)
M: Excuse me. I wonder if you could give me a hand. I’m looking for the national central bank. And I seem to get a bit lost.
W: It’s very near here. I’ll come along with you and walk you there.
    (Text 4)
M: This dress looks very nice on you. And it fits perfectly.
W: Yeah, it fits, and the price is reasonable, but I usually wear plain colors. I’m not used to this kind of pattern.
    (Text 5)
W: Hi. I’ve got a three o’clock reservation. I’d like to change my hairstyle a little bit.
M: OK. What length would you like?
    W: About shoulder length.
    (Text 6)
W: Well, that was pretty much a waste of time. After all those fantastic reviews, I’d had high hopes!
M: I’d been told that it was disappointing, so I was kind of prepared.
W: But the actors don’t often put on a bad performance — pity it was this film! At least the technology didn’t let anyone down — the flying scenes were exciting.
M: But they didn’t do anything really cutting-edge, did they? I mean I’ve seen it all before.
    (Text 7)
W: What do you think of this job? The hourly pay is pretty high.
M: But could you really do a newspaper delivery route?
W: Of course. I’m good at riding bikes. But I’m worried about waking up early …
M: What about this one? The pay isn’t high, but you can start working from evening.
W: A supermarket clerk, huh? Well, it would be good to work after school.
M: This one for a coffee shop might be good, too.
W: Oh yeah! I love that place. And it’s on my way to school. Hmm … which one should I apply to? The pay for the newspaper route is really nice. … Okay! My mind’s made up! I’ll just have to get up early.
    (Text 8)
W: We should decide on the moving date and call a moving company. I don’t want to pay a lot of money.
M: How about this company? They will give us a discount of 10 percent if we book at least one month before the moving day.
W: One month before? Then we have to move after December 15th in order to get the discount.
M: Yep. And there’s an additional discount if we book on a weekday.
W: A weekday? Let me see … Well, December 15th is a Monday. I have a meeting that day, and the fashion show is on Tuesday and Wednesday, so I’m only available on Thursday and Friday.
M: Friday would be good because we could then organize the new place over the weekend.
W: Yeah, but wait a second … They say “15 percent off Monday to Thursday and 5 percent off on Friday.” Let’s go for the biggest discount.
    M: OK!
    (Text 9)
M: Jenny, you recently tried flying.
W: Yes. I flew a plane with the help of a qualified instructor. I’d always imagined that flying instructors would be cool and quiet people. But my flying instructor, Jana, never stopped chatting and making me laugh by saying funny things during the flight.
M: She did it to help you relax. So what made you decide to do this?
W: Jana said she could notice her house while she was up there. That made me want to look for mine and enjoy a different view of the local countryside. It wasn’t like I wanted to be a pilot or anything.
    M: What about the flight?
W: It was amazing — one of the most exciting things I’ve ever done. When we landed, it felt like we’d been up in the air for hours, although it was only about 30 minutes in reality.
M: Has this made you want to try other experience days?
W: Definitely, yes. I’ve never tried horse riding, so that’s something I wouldn’t mind doing. First on my list, though, is to drive a sports car, and after that comes deep-sea fishing.
    (Text 10)
Welcome to Climb Summer School, everyone. Over the following ten weeks, you’ll take classes ranging from language, literature to creative writing and communication. Our school was founded in 1983. If you take a look at page 34 in your brochures, you’ll find a picture of what the school used to look like back then. Now, please open to page 56, so we can have a look at the map. Very well. We’ve got three student halls in total, one on the left of the garden and two on the right. You will live in the one on the left — Mary Hall, named after our founder’s sister. The other two are Peter Hall and William Hall. You can see a row of buildings on your left. The building closest to us here at the gate is the canteen. The next one is the gym. And the last building is the study center. I know most of you have traveled a long way to get here. So you’ll be taken to your rooms where you can relax for a couple of hours. Later on, we’ll have our first activity of the day, a mix-and-match dinner. And tonight, we’ll have our very first film night.
