A little girl has been searching for her lost dog. All of a sudden, she hears a bark coming from around the corner, and she looks around to see . . .  Kevin has worked very hard to try out for the soccer team at school. The coach has posted a list of this year's team members on his office door. Kevin walks forward to look at the list . . . .   Mary's parents have been discussing whether or not to move to another state. They call Mary and her sister down to talk with them about their decision . . .                                               Lois has performed in the state gymnastics finals. She waits anxiously to hear the names of the winners. The announcer says, "And first place goes to . . ." 2. The deaths of Romeo (who kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead) and Juliet (who kills herself when she awakes and sees Romeo dead). Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare (《罗密欧和朱丽叶》)   When Gaston and the townspeople come to attack the beast, and Belle admits her love for the beast. Beauty and the Beast, Disney (《美女与野兽》)  In "The Three Little Pigs," suspense builds up until the confrontation between the third pig and the wolf. This confrontation is the climax.(三只小猪)  How to create a climax of a story? On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn't we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there? David and I became nervous. Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. ……he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf: quickly catching up with him. Mac's heart jumped. ……, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, ……. Then it ……, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back …… The car abruptly stopped in front of him. "Get into the car." Paul shouted at Mac. Mac jumped off the bike and slid into the car without delay as the wolf was just two steps away and was about to tear Mac into pieces. What a narrow escape! But before we jumped off the horses, we found that we had been off the beaten track and got lost. We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Exhausted and hungry, I wondered if we could find our way back. Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest. Jane, exhausted and scared, lay down near a stone, missing her family at a distance. All the fantastic memory crowded in and she couldn't help crying, "Hadn't I quarreled with Tom, walked away and climbed to the high place, I wouldn't be trapped in this awful place, confronted with the danger of dying. She regretted with endless anxiety, and then became asleep with shining tears in her eyes. Immediately, an absolute darkness ruled the forest(黑暗). Even worse, the temperature suddenly dropped dramatically. (寒冷)    It didnt take long for the forest to be enveloped in darkness(黑暗). Her rasping breath steamed(寒冷) in the moonlight and her throat was parched from thirst. 【检测训练】1. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内界和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。I have kept a watch from my grandfather. When I was a schoolboythe watch hung by my grandfather's bed. The face was marked with elegant Roman numerals and the case was gold. It was a splendid watch and I often stared at it longingly sitting with my grandfather. He would often ask about my progress at school. The day I told him my success in the examinationshe was overcome with pleasure. “You'll be going to a new school next. And then you'll go to universitywill you”he asked. “But you'll need plenty of patience. Patience and hard work. That's the way to succeed.”He took off the watch and wound it. “It was given me for fifty years of faithful service with my firm” he said proudly. Finallyhe handed me the watch due to the progress in school. I held itfeeling its weight. As I was leaving himhe said“And you'll not forget what I told you” I was suddenly very moved. “NoGranddad” I promised“I'll not.”Arriving homemy mother was to hold it in trust until she considered me old enough to look after itbut I protested so strongly that she finally agreed to hang it where I could always see it. The summer ended and it was time for me to enter the new school. I never made friends easily there. One boyCrawleywas a welltodo fellow whose way of impressing us was to show off his possessions. His bicycle was newhis boots were of the best hideeverythingin factwas better than ours—until he brought a watch. Crawley said his watch was absolutely the finest watch.“I have a better watch” I announced. “Wellshow it to us”Crawley said sneeringly(讽刺地). “I'll bring it this afternoon” I said. “Then you'll see.” I rode my bike homewondering how I would persuade my mother to let me take the watch. All of the other sixth graders were already outside, since it was a pleasant spring day.“Look at what I found this morning in the storage cupboard when I was getting out some art supplies for Mrs. Eiffler.” said Karen, holding up a wooden box filled with short pieces of chalk in every color of the rainbow."Wow! What fun it would be to write on the chalkboard while everyone is outside.” Judy said. “But M “s. Eiffler doesn't allow us to write on the chalkboard.” I responded, already feeling guilty. “Don't be afraid, Janet. No one will ever know,” said Karen.I unwillingly joined my friends in the artwork, but was afraid of being caught. I knew well that we were breaking not one, but two class rules. The second rule-was that no one was allowed to stay inside at noon without a written excuse from home if the weather was nice.Trying various colors, we drew houses, trees and three-dimensional boxes. It was fun! Then Judy had an idea. "We're all right-handed. Let's see who can write our names best using our left hands. Judy and Karen picked up their chalk and started writing. I chose a white piece from the box and wrote my name. “I think Judy is the winner,” said Karen. “Hers is the best.”“We’d better get this board cleaned off before Mrs. Eiffler comes back,” said Judy, erasing our artwork from the board. Everything came off but my name!In disbelief; I looked carefully at the chalk I held in my sweaty hand. It wasn't chalk at all, but a small piece of white color crayon. My mother had a saying: " Fools, names and faces always appear in. public places.” I never understood fully what it meant before. Now I did! My knees felt weak. What would Mrs. Eiffler do to me? And the teacher would be returning soon. Paragraph 1“Quick, let’s get some wet paper towels,” said Judy.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2We were just slipping into our desks when the bell rang.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________3. In December 2020, Flores Gonzalez had her 4-year-olds, Luna and Gianella, tie their lists to two balloons and release them into the sky above their home in Liberal, Kansas. It was their way of reaching Santa Claus. Flores Gonzalez thought it was important to do something special for her daughters because of the hard year they had during the pandemic The schools were shut down and she was out of work for more than two months. Everyone seemed to be in low spirits. She wanted to cheer the family up and wanted the girls to feel that 2020 was another year spent with mom making beautiful memories. It was never with the purpose that someone would find the balloons. She thought the balloons would just float away and disappear somewhere in a tree nearby. But one of the balloons did make it to Alvin Bamburg, who was deer hunting in Grand Cane, Louisiana, in late December when he spotted a balloon tangled (纠缠) in a tree. He told himself he needed to get the trash out of the woods. However, when he got it, he noticed a folded yellow piece of paper sealed with a red star and it was a Christmas list from a girl named Luna. She had asked Santa to bring her candy, a Spider Man ball, a Frozen doll and a dachshund (腊肠狗) puppy, which was her most desired present. The holidays kept Alvin Bamburg and his wife busy. They had family reunions and organized several charity parties to help whoever needed help but they didn’t forget about the list. In early January, Bamburg shared his discovery with family and friends on Facebook. “I would love to know when it was launched. It looks like it travelled 600 miles,” he wrote. So many people shared the post that it eventually reached Flores Gonzalez.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________After months of communication, it was time for the Bamburgs to give them one last present.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________4. Father’s Day ChessIt was Dale's third Sunday volunteering at the retirement home. He had thought it would be a good way to give back. But today he just felt tired. While on a short break, Dale took a walk through the garden. There were people sitting on benches, chatting together. A woman sat knitting, looking very pleased with herself. The strands of brightly-colored yarn disappeared quickly through her hands.Across the courtyard, there was a man sitting alone at a table with a chessboard in front of him. Dale watched with curiosity as the man would stare at the pieces, then move them, and then would do the same from the other side of the board. On his way home after the day had ended, Dale found himself thinking about the man. How he was hunched over in deep thought, playing a game against himself. How odd, he thought. Each Sunday, Dale would see the man doing the same thing. While everyone else talked with one another or happily carried on, the man would sit, slightly bent over and scratching his chin. His eyes rarely came off of the chessboard. One Sunday, Dale went to the garden on his break expecting to see the man at his normal spot. But he wasn't there. It was Father's Day and there were many visitors at the home. Dale shrugged and thought the man must be busy with his family. That afternoon, Dale was mopping the hallways when he happened to pass by the man's room. The door was slightly open and he could see the man sitting in a chair next to the window, peering out at the courtyard. Dale knocked lightly and asked to come in.The man nodded. Dale saw a collection of framed photographs on the bedside table. “Are those your children?” he asked.“Yes, they’re all grown and live far away. They have their own kids now,” he replied. Dale, not wanting the man to be alone on Father's Day, had an idea. Para. 1: He went outside and got the chessboard from the table.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Para. 2: Dale was glad that he volunteered.___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________5. Pam Bales planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire^ Mount. On the dashboard (汽车仪表板) was a detailed plan ensuring she could return before the arrival of some forecasted bad weather. Different from former hike, though, this time, she had packed for almost every accident and intended to walk alone. At about 8 a.m., she'd checked the weather forecast. Bales knew from experience that her hike was realistic. Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better protect her core temperature as conditions changed.Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. She was wearing a fleece tank top (绒衣)and hiking pants, and no gloves or hat because the air was mild. Thirty minutes later, she climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She now was in a quarter-zip fleece top and gloves. At 10 a.m.? the weather was showing its teeth. Bales added more layers to resist cold winds and dense fog. Making her way across the snow-covered ridge, she noticed something: a single set of footprints made by a pair of sneakers. Not giving them much thought, she walked on.By 11 a.m.? Bales was getting cold. She decided to return to her car. On her way down, she again spotted the sneaker tracks, which suddenly made a hard left-hand turn off the trail. Now she felt genuinely alarmed. She was sure the hiker lost his way in the low visibility. If Bales continued to follow the tracks, she'd add risk and time to her return. But she couldn't let this go. She turned to the left and called out, “Hello!" Nothing.Bales followed the tracks, rounded a slight comer and saw a man sitting motionless. He wore tennis sneakers, shorts, a light jacket and fingerless gloves. His skin was pale and he had a glazed (呆滞的)look on his face. uOh5 hello/5 Bales approached and said, "What's your name?” The man didn't react. Obviously, nothing was connecting for him and he was in really big trouble. Bales stopped being a curious and concerned hiker, and began a full-on rescue mission._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Over the next hour, the man began to move and speak._________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________6. Like most children, I took my parents for granted. It wasn't until I became an adult that I realized their desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Mama and Daddy performed their angel magic with neither fanfare (炫耀) nor a desire for recognition. Because their kindness to others was something I accepted as a matter of course, I might never have evaluated this aspect of their personalities were it not for an event that my mother mentioned in passing. Arizona in July ushered in the monsoon (季风) season, which was in full swing and just that morning had hit the Southern Arizona desert with severe thunder, lightining, rain, and high winds. Mama and Daddy chose to spend the day wandering the dry, air-conditioned mall, having a bite to eat, and taking in a movie. It seemed a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon while leaving the storm outdoors. They chose a casual restaurant for lunch and were reading the menu when their waitress, a young woman in her mid-twenties, approached the table to introduce herself and take their order. Mama and Daddy noted that her hair was damp, as were her clothes. She was friendly but seemed to be quite tired. Drawing her into conversation, they learned she was a single mother and a college student working two jobs. That particular day had been unkind to her. Her car broke down, forcing her to walk to work in the rain and wind. She was concerned about how being without a vehicle would affect her ability to care for her daughter and go to college. Her frustration was obvious, and the day's events had certainly left her in a certain amount of despair. Yet, her comments centered on ideas for solving her problems rather than complaining about them. Her attitude aroused my parents' interest. When Mama and Daddy finished with lunch, they said goodbye to their waitress and wished her well. Her plight (困境) and attempt at a positive attitude touched them, and they wondered what they might do to help注意:1. They had time before the movie started to do some shopping; so they walked into a bookstore. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The waitress opened the bag and found some bills in a book.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
