Nothing in Wiley Post’s early years showed that he would become a famous pilot one day.
His family were farmers. In 1913, Wiley saw something that forever changed his life -- an airplane. After that he began to study everything he could find about flying. Wiley finally rode in an airplane in 1919. After his first ride, he knew that flying was something he could learn to do.
Wiley Post began his career in flying, not as a pilot, but as a performer who jumps from airplanes using a parachute (降落伞). He did this with a group that performed flying tricks to earn money.
Wiley Post then decided the only way to become a good pilot was to buy an airplane of his own. He needed more money than he earned in the flying show. He went to work in the oil-producing areas of Texas. But he damaged his left eye in an accident. Doctors had to get rid of his eye. Judging distance is difficult without two eyes. Wiley Post began teaching himself to judge distance with only one eye. It took a long time, but he succeeded. In 1928, he got a job flying the plane that belonged to a rich oil producer from Oklahoma called F.C.Hall. In 1930, Post entered the National Air Races in this plane and won.
On June 23, 1931, Wiley Post and Gatty had flown around the world. But many people said Gatty was the real hero. He had guided the flight. This hurt Post. Wiley Post began to plan another flight around the world. This time he would go alone.
On July 15, 1933, Post took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York. He became the first person to fly from New York to Berlin without stopping. He had flown around the world in eighteen hours and forty-nine minutes.

Born in 1949, Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion. Like many young trainers, she had Olympic dreams, but a serious illness prevented her from competing in the Games. The disappointment didn’t stop her from going forward. Instead, she became interested in marathon swimming.
For ten years Nyad devoted herself to becoming one of the world’s best long-distance swimmers. In 1970, she swam a ten-mile marathon in Lake Ontario, setting the women’s record for the course. In 1972 she set another record by swimming 102.5 miles from an island in the Bahamas to the coast of Florida. Then she broke a third record when swimming around Manhattan Island in 1975.
Nyad attempted to swim the distance between Florida and Cuba in 1978. Though the span(跨度) of water is less than 100 miles wide, it is rough and dangerous. After battling(与…作战) the water for two days, she had to give up for the sake of her own health and safety. Even so, she impressed the world with her courage and strong desire to succeed. It did not matter that her swim came up short; she believed she had touched the other shore.
When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer, she continued to try new things -- travelling the world as a reporter, writing books and giving public speeches about her life. Diana Nyad works to inspire others, just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.

Each school day, yellow school buses take millions of American kids to and from school. According to the law, school buses must be painted ‘school bus yellow.’ It is a mix of yellow and orange, similar to the flesh of a mango. Before such a law was passed, school buses were painted yellow, close to the color of a lemon. In 1939, Dr Frank Cyr had a meeting to set rules for US school buses. This included a standard color for all school buses in the whole country. Since then, Dr Frank Cyr has been known as ‘Father of the Yellow School Bus.’ The school bus yellow color is not just for looks. It is also a matter of safety. Research shows that yellow gets our attention faster than any other color. Even if we look straight ahead, we can see a yellow object that is going past us. Besides that, yellow is also more easily noticed in a dark environment. School buses usually pick up children to school in early mornings. The black letters on that yellow background is the easiest color to see in darkness. This is another reason why school bus yellow was chosen.
