Months passed with no sign of the surfboard. Falter saved money to buy a new surfboard for $ 1,500. But Falter never completely forgot the surfboard, which - six months later and more than 5,000 miles away from where it disappeared-floated to the southern Philippines. The local fisherman who found it didn't have much use of his unusual catch of the day, so he sold the board for s 40 to Giovanne Branzuela, an elementary school teacher. Branzuela hoped to leam to surf and one day share the skill with his students, who regularly accompany him on beach clean-ups.
The once-blue board had faded to a pale straw color during its journey, but its distinctive markings were still there: two elephants, one at either end. Underneath the elephants were the words "Doug Falter Surfboard".
Branzuela couldn't believe it on realizing how far the surfboard had traveled. He reached Falter online and sent him a photo of the surfboard. Falter was shocked to learn that his "baby"had drifted(漂流) across the world's largest ocean and survived. He was overjoyed.
But the story was far from over. Falter wanted to thank Branzuela with some surfing supplies for his kind act, but the teacher asked for school supplies instead, such as backpacks for his students and materials to help them learn English.

According to a survey, the waste of food on the dining table occupies 10% of the total grain output. Last week Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help develop new eating habits for customers. “Restaurants should use official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions,” the proposal said.
Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.
Catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “N-1” ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. It has inspired people to rethink their relationship with food and waste.
On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, a food delivery platform, to launch a “ half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. Besides, customers are encouraged to take their leftovers home.
To reduce food waste on social media platforms, some popular video platforms have stepped up content reviews of food-related live streams and implemented regulation of online eating shows. Now, if users search certain keywords, such as “eating show" or “competitive eaters", a cautionary message pops up to remind them to cherish food and keep a reasonable diet.
    8. What is the purpose of the proposal mentioned in the passage?
    A. To monitor food sales on social media and live-streaming.
    B. To expand the business and competitive ability of Meituan.
    C. To encourage restaurants to take measures to reduce food waste.
    D. To promote cooperation between Meituan and other organizations.
    9. How is Paragraph 3 developed?
    A. By doing a survey. B. By offering analysis.
    C. By making comparisons. D. By giving an example.
    10. What is the suggestion for consumers in the passage?
    A. Purchasing their favorite food. B. Buying proper amounts of food.
    C. Following some competitive eaters. D. Leaving their leftovers in the restaurant.
    11. What does the underlined phrase “pops up” in the last paragraph mean?
    A. Appears unexpectedly. B. Spreads widely.
    C. Moves quickly. D. Fades slowly.
    D
Findings of an international team of researchers from Japan and China suggest that geese might have been the first poultry species to have been domesticated (驯养) by humans—as far back as 7,000 years ago.
Scientists have long held different opinions on the history of the domestication of birds, with a belief that it was chickens that were the first to be domesticated. In 2014, Chinese researchers reported ancient DNA taken from the earliest archaeological chicken bone discovery in China, suggesting chickens were domesticated in northern China as early as 10,000 years ago.
But the researchers behind the latest findings say that the 2014 study lacks firm evidence. In the new study, the team unearthed the archaeological site of Tianluoshan, a 7,000-year-old rice cultivation village in the lower Yangtze River valley in what is today known as East China’s Zhejiang province. They found a total of 232 goose bones at the site. The inhabitants of the village were hunter-gatherers.
The researchers used multiple approaches to study the bones, and found evidence of domestication.
Four bones were from goslings (幼鹅) ranging from eight to 16 weeks old, suggesting they hatched near the site. Geese were domesticated from wild geese. These migratory birds fly to northern Siberia to breed (繁殖) after the spring and then fly south for the winter, according to researchers from the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology. They said the goslings were too young to have flown in from elsewhere. At the time, Tianluoshan did not have the conditions to be a natural breeding place for wild geese, so it follows that the goslings were born after domestication.
The researchers also analyzed the chemical makeup of adult goose bones, which contained evidence of the water they drank. Their analysis indicated that the adult geese also seemed to have been locally bred, for they were all roughly the same size. Carbon dating also showed that the bones belonged to geese that lived about 7,000 years ago.
Researchers say ancient DNA analysis is required in further studies to investigate which species were bred to become local geese populations.
    12. Where did the researchers find the goose bones?
    A. In Tianluoshan. B. In northern China.
    C. In northern Siberia. D. In the upper Yangtze river valley.
    13. What can we learn about the goslings from the study?
    A. Their parents were wild geese.
    B. They were probably raised by humans.
    C. They flew to Tianluoshan for winter.
    D. They were too young and had to stay.
    14. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5 and Paragraph 6?
    A. The result of the study. B. The importance of the study.
    C. The process of domestication. D. The evidence of domestication.
    15. What’s the purpose of the passage?
    A. To show how geese were domesticated by humans.
    B. To prove that chickens were not the first to be domesticated.
    C. To show a new study on the history of the birds’ domestication.
    D. To introduce how the geese were domesticated from wild geese.

My teenage son, Jordan, always complained about having to be home earlier than all his friends. He would tell me that he was already seventeen, but still had a curfew (宵禁). He believed he was practically an adult. I pointed out that he was not an adult as he was still in high school.
“You don’t trust me!” he yelled. Before I continued, he rolled his eyes, slammed the door and walked away. I sighed. How could I make Jordan see that I only wanted to keep him safe?
I decided to go for a walk, hoping the December air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on her: a small black cat, just like a meatball. “Hi, Meatball,” I said, bringing her into my arms. I walked back in, touching her neck gently. Meatball seemed happy enough to come in the house, but after an hour or two, she sat by the door, meowing to go back outside.
“Why won’t she just stay in with us all the time?” Nathan, my youngest son asked.
I explained to him that she was happy here but she liked being able to come and go as she pleased.
“That must be nice,” Jordan muttered from the other room, complaining why the cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
    Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me and meowed again. I patted her head, “I know you’re not happy, but it’s for your own good.”
“Mom’s not being mean to you,” Nathan told the cat. “She’s just trying to keep you from turning into a frozen meatball.” We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn’t find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen her.
    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;

Doug Falter, an American photographer, returned home, teary-eyed and exhausted. He pouted online that evening, "I lost my baby." That "baby" referred to a surfboard that had been custom-made for him. Hours earlier, a big wave had separated Falter from this prized possession.
Falter said it made him raise money for the kids. So far, he has collected $ 2,500,which he has used to buy and ship maps, puzzles, classroom posters, textbooks, and workbooks.

C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第一段中“Last week Meituan co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help develop new eating habits for customers. “Restaurants should use official accounts on social media and live-streaming to promote and advocate food-saving actions,” the proposal said. (上周,美团网与一些商业组织联合发布了一项提议,呼吁餐馆停止食物浪费,帮助消费者养成新的饮食习惯。该提议称:“餐厅应利用社交媒体和直播的官方账号来推广和倡导节约食品的行动”)”可推知,文章中提到的提议的目的是鼓励餐馆采取措施减少食物浪费。故选C。
    【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to remove food waste. The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “N-1” ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people. More food is only brought to the table if required. It has inspired people to rethink their relationship with food and waste.( 18个省的餐饮协会也加入了这场消除食物浪费的运动。武汉餐饮协会提出了“N-1”订餐代码,即10人一组只订够9人用餐的量。更多的食物只有在需要的时候才会被带到餐桌上。它启发人们重新思考他们与食物和浪费的关系)”可知,第三段中以武汉餐饮协会提出 “N-1”方案为例,可推知,第三段是通过举例而展开的。故选D。
    【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Meituan and the organizations are advocating that merchants offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid food waste due to misleading information.(美团和相关组织倡导商家为消费者提供指导,包括在点餐过程中提醒消费者有关食材的味道、份量等信息,帮助消费者避免因信息误导而造成的食物浪费)”;倒数第三段中“The Wuhan Catering Association proposed an “N-1” ordering code for restaurants in which a group of 10 diners would only order enough for nine people.( 武汉餐饮协会提出了“N-1”订餐代码,即10人一组只订够9人用餐的量)”以及倒数第二段“On Friday, the China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele. me, a food delivery platform, to launch a “ half-dish plan", encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions. Besides, customers are encouraged to take their leftovers home.(周五,中国烹饪协会宣布与饿了吗合作。外卖平台饿了么将推出“半份计划”,鼓励餐厅为顾客提供点小份的选择。此外,鼓励顾客把剩菜带回家)”可推知,文中提到的商家在顾客点菜过程中提醒顾客食物份额的大小,武汉餐饮协会提出的 N-1 方案以及中国烹饪协会与“饿了么”平台合作推出的“半份计划”,即文章中对消费者的建议是购买适量的食物。故选B。
    【11题详解】
词义猜测题。根据画线词上文“if users search certain keywords, such as “eating show" or “competitive eaters", a cautionary message”以及后文“to remind them to cherish food and keep a reasonable diet.”可知,当用户搜索与食物有关的关键词时,警示信息就会“突然出现,弹出”,提醒他们珍惜食物,保持合理饮食。故画线词意思是“突然出现,弹出”。故选A。
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

They found a total of 232 goose bones at the site. 故选A。
根据第五段中“They said the goslings were too young to have flown in from elsewhere. At the time, Tianluoshan did not have the conditions to be a natural breeding place for wild geese, so it follows that the goslings were born after domestication.(他们说小鹅还太小,不可能是从别的地方飞来的。当时的天罗山不具备大雁自然繁殖的条件,所以小鹅是经过驯化后出生的。)”可知,研究中的幼鹅可能是经过驯化后出生的,即它们可能是人类养大的。故选B。
    【14题详解】
主旨大意题。第四段中“The researchers used multiple approaches to study the bones, and found evidence of domestication.(研究人员使用多种方法来研究这些骨骼,并发现了驯化的证据。)” 根据第五段中“so it follows that the goslings were born after domestication. (由此可见,小鹅是经过驯化后出生的。)”与上文呼应,以及第六段中“The researchers also analyzed the chemical makeup of adult goose bones.( 研究人员还分析了成年鹅骨头的化学组成。)”
根据第一段中“Findings of an international team of researchers from Japan and China suggest that geese might have been the first poultry species to have been domesticated (驯养) by humans.(来自日本和中国的一个国际研究小组的研究结果表明,鹅可能是第一个被人类驯化的家禽物种。)”

    注意:
    1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jordan nodded, “I let her out last night.” My mouth dropped open. “She was outside all night?” I was so furious, “It was freezing and she could die!” Jordan choked back his words, stunned. I grabbed my coat and rushed outside. Jordan followed, fear welling up in his eyes. Several minutes later, the poor thing was found, shaking and curling into a tiny ball. I picked her up, unsure whether she was alive or dead. Jordan was scared, “We need a vet! Now!”
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball inside his coat. I could hear him talking to the cat, apologizing repeatedly. Luckily, the vet saved Meatball. Seeing her eyes open, Jordan stroked her head, all tears. Then, surprisingly, he turned to me. He apologized for what he had done. “I know you just want to keep me safe,” he murmured. I felt a lump in my throat. He rubbed Meatball’s back, “Looks like we are both going to observe the curfew. It’s for our own good.”
