Everything was well under way for Kulenic and Perkins’ dream wedding ceremony(婚礼 典礼) in Hawaii, but, unluckily, COVID-19 had other plans. Even without a ring, the couple was determined to make their wedding happen. So, they moved quickly to hold a small
ceremony at a family member’s beach house on Topsail Island.
On the day before the wedding, they got some good news. The company making their ring had reopened and agreed to send the ring to the couple by express. But there was just one problem: the ceremony was at 3: 00 p.m. and the ring was expected to arrive by 4: 30 p.m.
As members of the wedding party made their way to the beach for the ceremony, the couple’s wedding photographer (摄影师), Amy Shores, left a note on the front door for the courier (快递员). “I wrote in capital letters, ‘YOU HAVE THE RING’,” Shores said.
It wasn’t until he read the note that courier Joe Engel realized the importance of what he was carrying. So, with the box in his hand he rushed to the beach, where the wedding ceremony had already begun. “The moment Kulenic saw me, she started running towards me. We met down the beach, and I just handed it over to her and said ‘Congratulations’,” Engel said.
Shores successfully took several photos of the happy moment. “I’ve photographed

weddings with tons of people. This is probably the most special wedding I've ever photographed,” Shores said. “It was just the most magical moment.”
“It's so great that they had an unforgettable wedding in this special time and I didn’t ruin it by being the last-minute ring bearer,” Engel said, smiling.
    24. What was the problem for the wedding ceremony?

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane ( 飓 风 ) Katrina hit New Orleans, Louisiana and the neighboring area.
Darlene Alexander, who lived in New Orleans in 2005, remembers hearing the first storm warnings. She thought nothing of it. But when the Governor of Louisiana told people to leave, Alexander decided to act quickly. She bought a car immediately at a car company that was already fixing wood over its windows. The morning before the storm, she drove with her two sons to Shreveport, Louisiana.
“I took a bag of pictures,” Alexander said, “and a couple of clothes. My son Austin took

several pairs of tennis shoes. I remember getting angry at him because he took so many shoes. But then, when we all lacked for shoes, he was the only one who was not short of shoes.” Like most people who ran away from New Orleans, Alexander didn’t know that 80 percent of the city would be covered with water. Katrina was one of the deadliest hurricanes
in U. S. history. More than 1,800 people were killed, mostly in New Orleans. Property (财产)
damage in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama totaled more than $100 billion. When the walls that were built to keep out water fell down, more than 100,000 homes and businesses were destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of people became homeless.
Alexander decided to move to Shreveport so that she could raise her sons “in a safe environment”. Her son Austin, who was 13 at the time of the storm, says that the chance to start a new life in a new city “was probably one of the best things that ever happened” to him and his family.
Charlene Gordon-Cannon,who also lived in New Orleans in 2005,said the storm caused a lot of worry and hurt many people. Her home was lost. The entire terrible situation made her young daughter, Nila, feel “stressed out (极度焦虑的) and frightened ”.

Most rain forests lie close to the equator(赤道), where the climate is often mild and there are long hours of sunshine. The warmth of the land heats the air above, causing it to rise and tiny drops of water to fall as rain. The rainfall can reach at least 98 inches a year. This wet, warm world with plenty of sunlight is perfect for plants to grow, so the trees grow fast with green leaves all the year round. The trees themselves also have an effect on the climate. They
gather water from the soil and pass it out into the air through their leaves. The wet air then forms clouds, which hang over the treetops like smoke. These clouds protect the forest from the daytime heat and night-time cold of nearby deserts, keeping temperatures fit for plant growth.
Rain forests slightly farther away from the equator remain just as warm, but they have a dry season of three months or more when little rain falls. Tree leaves fall during this dry season and new leaves grow when the wet season or monsoon ( 雨 季 ) begins. Thus these
areas are known as the “monsoon forest”.
Another type of rain forest grows on tropical mountains. It is often called the “cloud forest” because clouds often hang over the trees like fog.
The rain forest is the ideal place for the growth of many different trees. Most of them depend on animals to eat their fruits and spread their seeds (种子). When the fruits are eaten,
the seeds inside them go undamaged through animals’ stomachs and are passed out in their droppings. The seeds lying on the forest floor then grow into new trees.
    32. The climate of the rain forests near the equator is .
    A. mild, wet and windy B. hot, rainy and foggy
    C. hot, wet and cloudy D. warm, wet and sunny
    33. We can learn from the passage that .
    A. tree leaves are green all the time in the monsoon forest
    B. there is a dry season in the cloud forest on tropical mountains

    C. clouds help the plants in the rain forest near the deserts to grow
    D. the formation of climate in the rain forest has little to do with the trees
    34. According to the passage, play the most important role in the spreading of seeds.
    A. animals B. droppings C. fruits D. winds
    35. This passage is most likely to be found in .
    A. a travel guide B. a story book
    C. a technical report D. a geography book
