In the 1940s, Lena Horne was the first African-American in Hollywood to
sign a long-term contract with a major movie studio. Her deal with MGM stated that she would never play the role of a servant. During this period, African-American actors were mostly limited to playing servants or African natives.
But this refusal also limited her movie career. Horne was generally only offered
the role of a nightclub singer. Her characters did not interact with white characters in these movies. This way, her part could be cut from the version of the movie that played in Southern States.
Lena Horne later wrote that the movie producers did not make her into a
servant, but they did not make her into anything else, either. Lena Horne once said
that World War Two helped make her a star. She was popular with both black and white servicemen. She sang on army radio programs and traveled to perform for the troops. During one event, she noted that German prisoners of war were permitted to
3
sit closer to the stage than black soldiers. These experiences led to Lena Horne’s work in the Civil Rights Movement.
She protested racial separation at the hotels where she performed. She took
action so that she and her musicians would be permitted to stay in those hotels. Black musicians at the time generally stayed in black neighborhoods. Lena Horne also sang at civil rights gatherings. She took part in the March on Washington protest in 1963.It was during this event that Martin Luther King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Lena Horne performed in a strong and expressive way. One expert said she was
not warm and amiable like white female singers at the time. Instead, she was a fierce black woman.
24.Lena Horne refused to play the role of a servant probably because she thought
playing such a role .
A.would make her homesick
B.wouldn’t make her famous

Parents, you’ve worked hard to teach the most important life lessons to your
little ones. You ask them to say “please” and “thank you”, you remind them to eat with a knife and fork, and you never, never let them pick their nose in public. But there’s one important lesson that you might be forgetting—and it’s nothing you can cover in a simple conversation.
According to a new study in the journal Science, babies receive more than
genetics(基因) from their parents. They can also get certain good qualities, such as persistence( 坚 持 不 懈 ) , by watching how adults behave. Researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology say that babies who watched an adult
4
struggle(努力) with and then triumph over something were more likely to show persistence themselves when given a new task.
The team at MIT studied 262 babies between the ages of 13 and 18 months.
They placed them in one of three situations. In the first one, the lead researcher struggled with two different toys’ problems before solving them, letting the baby
watch while she did so. The second time, the researcher solved the problems but did
not struggle with them. And for the third scene, she did not do anything.
After each scene, the researcher left a small musical toy with the child. She showed the baby that it could play music but did not teach them how to turn it on. The babies who had watched the researcher struggle discovered and pressed the toy’s button(按钮) a much greater number of times than those in the last two groups. In other words, the babies did not copy what they had watched; they learned not to give up, instead.
Now, the researchers are interested in finding which ways of talking with babies influence them the most. They also hope to know if the results can work in the real world, as well as whether the lesson of persistence might last into adulthood. 28.What important lesson might parents forget?
A.Asking their kids to be polite.
B.Setting an example for their kids.
C.Teaching their kids good table manners.
D.Using proper words in front of their kids.
29.What do the underlined words “triumph over” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Succeed at. B.Look at.
C.Search for. D.Care for.
30.What did the study mainly show?
A.Babies finished difficult tasks through copying.
B.Babies learned the value of persistence.
C.Kids learned most from their parents.
D.Kids are smarter than we thought.
31.What will the researchers make an effort to do?
A.Know the influence of society on behaviors.
B.Help parents get along with their kids.
C.Put the research results into practice.
D.Learn more about babies’ language.

A Japanese telecom company has designed a robot that it says has emotions (情 绪). But rather than run in fear of it, we’ve welcomed it into our homes: Pepper, the “emotional robots” sold out within a minute of going on sale.
Created by Aldebaran Robotics and Japanese mobile giant SoftBaok, Pepper
5
went on sale to the general public in Japan on June 20.It is “the first humanoid (类人的) robot designed to live with humans,” Aldebaran says on its website. Pepper costs about $1,600.And like all good mobile products, there’s a $120 per month data fee, as well as an $80 per month damage insurance fee. According to a news report, Pepper can pick up on human emotions and create his own using a “multi-layer neural (神经的) network” Pepper’s touch sensors and cameras are said to influence its mood, which is displayed on the tablet-sized screen on its chest.
Pepper will sigh when unhappy, and can go around your house recording your family’s daily activities. Aldebaran says Pepper can feel “joy, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness” but it doesn’t say how strongly it can feel these emotions. What happens when Pepper is having a bad day? Will it, like many humans, become uncooperative? Will it ask for some time alone? What happens if it knows that its purpose in life is just to take part in small talk? Thankfully, Pepper is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs, so if it is angry with and even turns on its owners, you’ll be safe if you can make it upstairs.
Aldebaran says in reality, there are probably quite a few years away from
artificial intelligence that could create real emotions. Aldebaran wasn’t immediately able to tell when Pepper will be available out of Japan, but additional sales are scheduled for July after the first 1,000 units sell out. SoftBank currently uses the robots in its stores as greeters, and it plans to offer Pepper to other stores in the future. Hopefully “boredom” is not an emotion Pepper can feel.
32.According to the author, Pepper .
A.is very popular among customers B.can not only run but also show fear
C.is going to be sold all over the world D.can deal with many kinds of
housework
33.How much do you need to pay for Pepper’s data and damage insurance fee each year?
A.80 dollars. B.120 dollars.
C.1,440 dollars. D.2,400 dollars.
34.Pepper’s height and roller balls are mentioned to .
A.introduce its appearance B.tell Pepper won’t get angry
C.show that safety isn’t a big problem D.explain robots have strong emotions
35.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Pepper cannot produce real emotions.
B.Pepper can feel joy, surprise and boredom.
C.Pepper will be sold in other countries next year.
D.Pepper is being used as waiters in some restaurants.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Playing sports has a lot of fun. But getting hurt is unavoidable.__36__
Wear protective equipment.
The equipment you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets(头盔) are the most common protective equipment. They protect your head while you’re playing football, baseball and softball, biking and so on.
Warm up.
__37__ Doing some stretching exercises can get you prepared to play sports.
By warming up, you get yourself ready to play. Warming up your muscles and practising a sport help keep you safe, too.
Know the rules of the games.
Traffic lights help prevent crashes between the cars that drive on the roads together. This works because drivers know the rules and follow them—at least most of the time.__38__ When players know the rules of the games, fewer injuries will happen. For example, you know that in football you can’t come from behind, crash into a player’s legs and steal the ball. It’s more safer to go after the ball rather than the player.
__39__
Some rules have nothing to do with scoring points. They are just about protecting other people. For example, a diver would make sure that the pool is clear before diving in. Otherwise, he or she might land on someone else.
__40__
This is a really important one. If you love sports, you may get right back to the game even you’re injured. But playing when you’re hurt is a bad idea. It can lead to an even worse injury.
A.Watch out for others.
B.Don’t do too much exercise.
C.It’s the same way with sports.
D.Don’t play when you’re injured.
E.It’s not a good idea to just go to the field and start playing.
F.You and the other players know what to expect from each other.
G.Take these steps to prevent injuries so that you can stay in the game.
