School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School, students are hard at work. In a garden bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting them for the weekend’s farmers market. They work Tuesday through Saturday with City Blossoms, a non-profit that brings community gardens to schools and other places where kids gather in urban(城市的) areas.

Roshawn Little, going into her junior year at Eastern, believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she has taken those healthy behaviors home with her and her family now buy more fruits and vegetables. We mainly live around liquor stores and snack stores. There aren’t that many grocery stores. They’re way out, and you have to drive so far ——a common problem in low-income urban areas .”

City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to establish school gardens, like the one at Eastern. These gardens, advocates say, are really outdoor classrooms where kids learn valuable lessons not just about nutrition, but also about science and math, even business skills. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.

On a recent weekend at the Aya farmers market, the kids work at a table decorated with handmade signs that read “onions” and “garlic”, inviting people to try their herbed salt with bread. Working at the market helps them practice public speaking skills and business skills.

Nadine Joyner of a nutrition education company has a food table next to the kids’ at the market and often buys produce from them. She is constantly impressed by the kids’ knowledge of what they’re selling they know how to grow it, how to prepare it, and how to cook it.

    24. What do students at Eastern do with the harvested vegetables?

    A. Sell them on market.    B. Take them to school.

    C. Give them to farmers.    D. Share them at home.

    25. What can we infer about the area Little lives in?

    A. It is inconvenient in traffic.

    B. It is crowded with grocery stores.

    C. It has poor access to fresh foods.

    D. It suffers from income inequality.

    26. Why does City Blossoms establish school gardens?

    A. To provide nutritious food.

    B. To improve classroom conditions

    C. To cooperate with local community.

    D. To create outdoor learning chances.

    C

According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research, both the size and consumption habits of our eating companions can influence our food intake. And contrary to existing research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions (), its the beanpoles with big appetites you really need to avoid.

To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited to a lab to ostensibly (表面上) participate in a study about movie viewership. Before the film began, each woman was asked to help herself to a snack. An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.

Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit, taking more food than they normally would have. However, they took significantly more when the actor was thin.

For the second test, in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case, she took 30 pieces. The results were similar to the first test: the participants followed suit but took significantly more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.

The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when were making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the Ill have what shes having effect. However, well adjust the influence. If an overweight person is having a large portion, Ill hold back a bit because I see the results of his eating habits. But if a thin person eats a lot, Ill follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim, why cant I?

    1. What is the recent study mainly about?
    1. Food safety.  B. Movie ownership.  C. Consumer demand.  D. Eating behavior.
    1. What does the underlined word beanpoles in paragraph1 refer to?
    1. Big eaters.  B. Overweight persons. C. Picky eaters.    D.Tall thin persons.
    1. Why did the researchers hire the actor?

    A. To see how she would affect the participants.

    B. To test if the participants could recognize her.

    C. To find out what she would do in the two tests.

    D. To study why she could keep her weight down.

    1. On what basis do we adjust the influence according to the last paragraph?
    1. How hungry we are.
    2. .How slim we want to be.
    3. How we perceive others.
    4. How we feel about the food.

    第二节 (5小题;每小题2分,满分10)

It is a very effective strategy for success in women’s basketball. Nevertheless (然而), most people are surprised to learn that the leading women’s basketball college teams in the United States use male practice players. Men playing on the same court as women? Don’t they control the game?    31   The men are there to make the practice sessions more demanding for the team than female practice players would.

32   Most of them are volunteers who are good players, but who are not on the men’s basketball teams. The NCAA(National Collegiate Athletic Association ), the athletic federation(联合会), approves of men practice players but they have to qualify(取得资格) for the team just as women players do.   33  Mostly though, they come to help the teams adapt and improve.

Besides the honor of practicing with top-notch ( 拔尖的 )women players, are there lots of other advantages of being on the practice team?   34   For example, men never get to play in actual games and they don't get to travel with the team to away games. They can't receive sports scholarships, although as registered college players, they have to keep up their academic grades. However, they get lots of indoor exercise.    35

    A. Unfortunately, there aren’t many.

    B. How do men get to be practice players?

    C. The players who qualify come for exercise and to let off steam(发泄).

    D. In the end, they know their participation contributes to the team’s success.

    E. No, they don't control the game even though they are typically larger and stronger.

    F. Many coaches believe that use of male practice players lowers the risk of injury in practice.

    G. If male practice players are used selectively, this practice may be an important teaching tool.

    第二节(满分25分)

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

    注意:写作词数应为60个词左右。

In the field of business, getting negative feedback (反馈) from customers is commonly annoying. Every company always wants to please its customers with its products or services. Every company wants to get positive comments from its customers rather than get

criticism. Not all people know that negative feedback actually provides various benefits for companies. Here are some of the benefits of getting negative feedback.

Whether a person is selling a product or a service to another person or organizationwhen there is negative feedback, he or she will improve the quality of the product or service. Every person or organization would like to please and keep their angry customers and the only way to do this is review the complaint and take necessary steps to win back the customers trust. Throughout the process, the quality of services and products will be improved.

Negative feedback may also cause many changes in a company. Receiving criticism can give the company the chance to adjust its goals to meet the needs or the expectations of its customers. For companies that offer products or services, negative feedback from customers may also cause them to create new and better products or services which could bring in more success and more customers.

If companies are able to pay great attention to the problems raised by customers, they may also gain loyalty(忠诚) from them. Studies have shown that customers actually become more loyal to a product or a service when their problems attract the companies enough attention. Many customers may complain, but they can also become loyal to a product or a service when they are being listened to and when their problems are properly dealt with.
