My roommate Lily was well organized, while I was not. Each of her things had its place, but mine were always hidden somewhere. She even labeled (贴标签于) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Lily got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Lily came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. "Take your shoes away! Why under my bed! "Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Lily answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing. Obviously, that was something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so lost in my work that I even didn't notice Lily had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression a kind of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, "Thanks.

A scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of four-year-olda piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the candy they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something amazing has happened. A survey found that those who was four year old had enough self-control to hold out generally and grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation (诱惑) early were more likely to be lonely, easily upset in time of difficulties and inflexible.
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would defeat a less resistant (有抵抗力的) person.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together, how one’s ability handles stress, for instance, affecting the ability to concentrate and putting intelligence to use. Among the ingredients (要素) for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ counts for about 20%, the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
8. Why does the author mention the experiment at the beginning of the text?
A. make the readers amused B. prove the scientist’s wisdom
Cintroduce the topic of the text D. show us how to do an IQ test
9. The experiment with the four-year-old shows us that.
A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
C. emotional intelligence won’t show up until Teen years.
D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence
10. The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means.
A. Positive B. negative C. impatient D. friendly
11. From the passage we learn that.
A. EQ does not have any connection with IQ
B. The higher a person’s IQ is, the higher his or her EQ is
C. Brain theory is able to explain what we wonder about most
D. Scientists haven’t discovered the way EQ and IQ work together
D
Some people think only school children do not agree with their parents, however, it is not true.
Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages. If it’s hard for you to communicate with your parents, don’t worry about it. Here are some advice for you to bridge the generation gap (代沟).
Don’t argue with your parents. Don’t get to your parents when you are angry. Your parents probably won’t consider your ideas if you are shouting at them. And you can’t express yourself well if you are angry. Go some place to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.
Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle, but only drove it on certain days.
Of course, your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations, it is especially important to show love and respect to them. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.
Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about, and why. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.
A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!
12. According to the passage, who have a communication problem?
A. Parents and other people. B. Only school kids and their parents.
C. Teachers and their students. D. Parents and children of all ages
13. The underlined word “bridge” in the passage means “______”.
A. 建立 B. 消除 C. 通过 D. 到达
14. If the values of your parents are different from those of yours, you’d better ______.
A. argue with them B. keep away from them
C. agree with them all the time D. tell your parents what you care about
15. The best title for the passage is______.
A. How to bridge the generation gap B. How to be good parents
C. How to deal with family problems D. How to be a good child
