In London, on February 23, 1983, Emily Blunt was born into a family of high achievers. Her father was a successful lawyer, her mother — now a teacher — was formerly an actress, and her older sister, Felicity, succeeded academically.
But Emily stuttered (口吃) terribly, and at the age of 12, the speaking problem caused her so much embarrassment that she stopped speaking altogether. One day a concerned teacher saw Emily imitating some of her classmates. He encouraged her to participate in a school play, using a different accent. She agreed, and according to Emily, “I didn’t stutter once.”
At 16 she was dealt a very disappointing blow. Hoping to follow in her sister’s academic footsteps, Emily applied to the famous Westminster School but she failed. Little did she know that failure would lead her to the place where her life would be changed forever!
Emily instead attended a college that specialized in the performing arts. While starring in a school play, she was spotted by talent agent Roger Charteris, who arranged (安排) for the 18-year-old to audition (试演) for a London play. The director found her to be determined and offered her a part. In 2001, with only six months of formal acting experience, Emily found herself performing together with the famous Judi Dench!
Then she began getting roles on British TV and made her film debut (初次演出) in 2004. Two short years later, Emily won the part of a lifetime, playing Meryl Streep’s assistant in The Devil Wears Prada.
A lot of movie offers followed, including The Young Victoria, which earned Emily several nominations (提名) and awards.
Emily realizes now that those early hardships led her to a place where she successfully followed her own dreams.
“When I think back to those times, I think to myself, without the disappointments I’d never be here!”
24. Before Emily went to college to study the performing arts, she ______.

When 12 girls from San Fernando High School in California received a grant (助学金) to develop an invention to solve a real-world problem, they decided to create a solar-powered shelter. Now for over a year, the girls have been working after school and over their winter and spring breaks to complete their project.
“They have this amazing drive that I’ve never seen before,” said Violet Mardirosian, a math teacher at San Fernando High. “I thought at the beginning that maybe some of them would give up, saying ‘I didn’t expect this much work,’ but they don’t. They’re just working hard and they’re not giving up.”
Living in a low-income community (社区), the girls have seen the problem of homelessness, which is why they chose that population to create a product for. Many of them are also from immigrant families and hope the solar-powered shelter might help refugees (难民).
Seventeen-year-old Maggie Mejia said that while she had no engineering experience, the girls figured out as a team how to create the prototype (雏形), using how-to videos and books that taught them how to code. But the most important lesson she’s learned over the course of the project isn’t technical. “I’ve learned a lot about helping others, helping the community and showing a better world to other people,” she said.
The girls have been invited to MIT to show their invention. Mardirosian says all the participating students have expressed interest in going into STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and that students from lower grades are already expressing interest in being involved next year. She says, “Many of them didn’t think about engineering before. They thought maybe they’re not made out to be an engineer. But working together now they realize they’re all needed in this field. Everyone has found their importance in this picture.”
28. Why did Mardirosian think some girls would give up the subject?
A. It was not practical in real life.
B. It demanded a lot of time and energy.
C. It was not supported by their math teacher.
D. It required a lot of money and expert knowledge.
29. Why did the girls decide to create a solar-powered shelter?
A. To save energy. B. To win a scholarship.
C. To help the homeless. D. To be admitted to MIT.
30. According to Maggie, what is the most valuable lesson she has learned from the project?
A. How to code. B. The power of teamwork.
C. The way to teach herself. D. How to make the world a better place.
31. What does Mardirosian think of the project?
A. It taught girls to be independent. B. It should be continued next year.
C. It inspired girls’ interest in STEM. D. It showed the importance of engineering.
D
Most advertising in ancient times was word-of-mouth, that is, people like something and told others about it. But even then, people advertised by putting inscriptions (题字) on walls, for example to display political slogans (标语) and to offer household goods for sale. Also, in Rome and Greece, in ancient times, it was common for people to use papyrus, a kind of paper, to advertise things they had lost or found. The tradition of wall or rock painting as a way of advertising goods is even more ancient.
Painting developed in the 15th and 16th centuries, and this increased the forms of advertising. Handbills — small printed notices and advertisements — became common. Then, by the 17th century, advertisements started appearing in weekly newspapers in England. In the 19th century mail order catalogues appeared, helping to sell all kinds of goods.
Finally, advertisements in the 1960s became more creative and more interesting. Also, they began to draw attention to the ‘unique selling points’, the USPs of products. These are the qualities that make a product different from competitors’ products.
These days, advertisers have come up with new ways of promoting their products. For example, product placement is now common. This is advertising in TV programs or films by having a character, preferably played by a famous actor, use a particular product. For example, Tom Cruise’s character in the movie, Minority Report, had a computer with the Nokia logo on it, and his watch was clearly made by Bulgari.
TV commercials are a very good medium (媒介) for advertisers, though these are very expensive. If an organization wants to have a 30-second TV advertisement during the yearly Superbowl game in the United States, they have to pay about $2.5 million.
Perhaps the most interesting development is the use of famous people to endorse (代言) a product. The basketball player, Michael Jordan, endorsed Mike products and wore them while playing.
Getting well-known people to endorse a product can be expensive, but endorsements certainly increase a product’s sales, especially if the famous person has a positive image in the eyes of the public.
32. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. Ways of advertising in ancient times.
B. The development of advertising.
C. The influence of advertising.
D. Types of the product advertising in ancient times.
33. Which of the following is TRUE about advertisement in the 1960s?
A. They were complex and entertaining.
B. They contained quite a lot of information.
C. They were mainly shown in TV programs.
D. They concentrated on the special features of products.
34. In product placement, advertisers tend to use ______.
A. cartoon characters B. popular actors or actresses
C. fictional characters D. intelligent people
35. What is the benefit of endorsements?
A. They are not expensive. B. They are fairly interesting.
C. They promote product sales. D. They pass on positive messages.

书面表达
One possible version:
No doubt every Senior 3 student wishes to be successful in the National College Entrance Examination. Yet what should we do in order to achieve success? Here are some suggestions.
First, it’s very important to have a right attitude, for a normal state of mind and self-confidence not only helps us to relax but also enables us to overcome difficulties bravely. Meanwhile, we should have a definite goal and a correct estimation of ourselves. Only in this way will we not be easily pleased or disappointed with what we have known and done. Besides, we’d better sometimes talk with our parents, teachers or classmates, who may help us out when we’re in trouble. Finally, striking a proper balance between study and rest keeps us energetic and a healthy diet is useful as well.
With these done, I think we can greatly improve our performance.
