Meet Liam Mills, the first aid specialist who provides life-saving support at festivals and events, and he's just 16 years old.
A bit young to be a first aider, aren’t you?
You might think that, but in fact I've been doing this for almost a year now. I already have a huge amount of valuable experience.
Why did you join the British Red Cross?
I've always been interested in first aid, so when I saw some Red Cross volunteers at a local event I went over for a quick talk. After hearing what they had to say, I jumped at the chance of joining.
What’s the big attraction?
As soon as you've treated an injured man, you will never look back. I've treated many types of injury now, from cut fingers to even heart disease cases. It's endlessly challenging and interesting.
What have you learned?
I'm now a skilled volunteer, which means I have additional qualifications (资历) on top of my standard first aid certificate (证书). For example, I'm qualified to use Entonox (laughing gas) for pain management. First aid with the Red Cross is a whole lot more than just cleaning and dressing wounds.
Any stand-out memories?
Once, my colleague and I attended a call. As we approached the scene, all I could see was someone lying perfectly still on the floor. When you realise that someone is helpless and completely depending on you to do the right thing, you feel this sudden rush of responsibility. But fortunately, our training means we have the confidence and knowledge to deal with such situations.
Best thing about being an event first aider?
You get to help people, while also enjoying the chance of going to lots of great events. It really is a win-win situation.
21. We learn from the text that Liam Mills _____.
A. is a first aid trainer C. is the best first aider in the Red Cross
B. works in a local hospital D. helps save lives at festivals and events
22. The underlined phrase “jumped at” can be replaced by “_____”.
A. missed B. waited for C. took D. turned down
23. What does Liam Mills think of first aid?
A. Boring. B. Dangerous. C. Easy. D. Attractive.
24. What can we infer from the text? A. All first aiders can use Entonox.
B. First aiders just do some simple work.
C. Liam Mills still lacks confidence in his work.
D. Liam Mills benefits from his first aid experiences.
B
“Would you mind putting all of the heavy things in one bag and all of the light things in another?” I ask the shop bagger at Whole Foods.
“Sure, no problem,” he says. “Are you okay?”
I tell him I'm recovering from shoulder surgery and can't lift more than three pounds with my right arm, and he insists on carrying both bags to my car. He tells me he recently had back surgery, and we chat about our experiences recovering from unexpected surgery.
As I'm cutting vegetables later that evening, I notice myself smiling about the pleasant afternoon I had. As a writer working at home, I spend a lot of time alone each day. I spent the previous month in a sling (悬带), so the silences felt heavier.
On that day in particular, I didn't see my husband, friends, or family members, but I still felt cheerful. I commented on Netflix's “You” with my doctor. I made small talk with the cashier at Whole Foods, who I discovered is also a writer. And there was the friendly conversation with the shop bagger.
It turns out these small interactions (互动) were enough to lift my mood . Our social lives consist of both “weak ties” and “strong ties.” A strong tie is your husband or wife, parent, brother or sister, or best friend, while a weak tie is an acquaintance (认识的人) of sorts — someone like your barista who prepares coffee in a coffee shop or the cashier at your favorite store.
“These kinds of small interactions with acquaintances make us feel good,” says professor Gillian Sandstrom at the University of Essex. “It makes us feel more trust in the world and more of a sense of community. I think that's something humans really need.”
So next time, when meeting someone who you know slightly, try making a conversation. And you may feel as happy as me.
25. Which of the following can be used to describe the shop bagger?
A. Confident. B. Kind. C. Humorous. D. Proud.
26. What did the author think of her previous life? A. Terribly painful. B. Quite exciting. C. Rather busy. D. Very lonely.
27. Why was the author happy that day? A. She became a writer's close friend.
B. She spent quality time with her relatives.
C. She was as healthy as before the surgery.
D. She communicated with some acquaintances.
28. What do Sandstrom's words suggest?
A. Weak ties play an important role in our life.
B. Strong ties help build a sense of community.
C. It is important to interact with family members.
D. It is sometimes hard to meet a nice acquaintance.
C
Three fish species face extinction due to overfishing, according to an international group.
In a new report, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) added Pacific bluefin tuna to its list of more than 22,000 species in danger of extinction. The tuna was joined by the American eel and Chinese pufferfish.
For 50 years, the IUCN has kept a “Red List” of species that are becoming extinct. In an IUCN news report, Director General Julia Marton-Lefèvre said, “The frequent changes to the IUCN Red List make us realize that our planet is losing its diversity of life, largely due to our destructive actions to satisfy our growing needs.”
Marton-Lefèvre called for policy makers to increase the number of protected areas and to see that they are well-managed. “Experts warn that endangered species poorly represented in protected areas are reducing twice as fast as those which are well represented,” she said.
The bluefin tuna is considered a special food in many parts of the world. It is used in traditional Japanese dishes such as sushi and sashimi. A falling population of bluefin tuna could cause the fish to disappear from the Pacific Ocean for good, IUCN experts warn. To prevent extinction, they say limits must be placed on fisheries.
Bruce Collette is the IUCN's tuna and billfish specialist. “The Pacific bluefin tuna market value continues to rise,” Collette said, adding that we need to reduce the number of catches of young fish to improve the species' situation.
The Chinese pufferfish is now listed as “critically endangered”. The fish is found in several protected areas in the Pacific Ocean near China with measures in place to protect it. More needs to be done to prevent extinction, IUCN experts say.
The American eel has joined the Japanese eel on the endangered list due to pollution, habitat loss and overfishing. The American eel is in demand in East Asian food markets as an alternative (替代) to the endangered Japanese eel.
29. What do Julia Marton-Lefèvre's words in Paragraph 3 suggest?
A. Our planet is always changing. B. The IUCN can't meet people's needs.
C. Many animal species are already extinct.
D. Human behavior is damaging animals' lives.
30. According to Julia Marton-Lefèvre, policy makers should _____.
A. carry out a strict policy B. set up more protected areas
C. manage protected areas directly D. prevent people from catching fish
31. To save Pacific bluefin tuna from extinction, we should _____.
A. stop people from eating them B. develop the bluefin tuna market
C. forbid overfishing and protect young fish
D. improve the environment of bluefin tuna
32. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Fish at risk B. Species on the Red List
C. Animals facing extinction D. The IUCN is working to protect fish
D
Next month, about 30,000 runners will take to the streets of Boston, Massachusetts, for one of the world’s oldest and most famous races, the Boston Marathon. Nearly half the competitors in the 26.2-mile race will be women. But for most of the race’s 119-year history, only men were officially allowed to compete.
A woman named Roberta “Bobbi” Gibb helped change that in 1966, when she secretly ran the marathon and finished ahead of most of the men. “Word went out around the world that a woman had done the impossible,” says Gibb. “It changed the way men thought about women.”
Gibb saw her first Boston Marathon in 1964, while running through her neighborhood. She was inspired to run the race herself. For nearly two years, Gibb trained to build the energy and strength she’d need to finish. But when she sent in an application for the 1966 race, it was turned down.
At the time, the longest official races for women were only 1.5 miles. Many people didn’t think women were physically capable of running longer distances. Running a marathon was also seen as “unladylike.”
But the 23-year-old Gibb refused to let go of her dream. She came up with a plan to run the race anyway. On April 19, she showed up at the marathon wearing her brother’s shorts and a sweatshirt to hide the fact that she was a woman.
Gibb hid in the bushes near the starting line. When the race began, she jumped into the pack. Shortly into the race, Gibb took off her sweatshirt. To her surprise, the crowd cheered when they realized she was a woman. Gibb finished the race in 3 hours and 21 minutes — faster than two thirds of the male runners.
Gibb opened the door for future female long-distance runners. In the years that followed, she and other women ran in the Boston Marathon, even though the rules still prohibited (禁止) women from running in the race. Finally, in 1972, the marathon was officially opened to women.
33. What happened to Gibb when she was found running the 1966 Boston Marathon?
A. She ran back to the starting line. B. She got support from the crowd.
C. She was driven away from the race. D. She took off her brother’s sweatshirt.
34. Which of the following can best describe Gibb?
A. Easy-going. B. Soft-hearted. C. Strong-willed. D. Open-minded.
35. What’s probably the best title for the text? A. Leading a new life
B. Running into history C. Long-distance runners D. The world’s oldest race
七选五 Culture
Our culture is the system we use to build our identity. All living creatures are part of a culture. Even animals have a culture! So what is culture? It's the way we behave in a group.
It begins with each individual family. Within our families we do things to build relationships with each other. This can include routines for doing things. 36 Traditions are activities that are repeated on a regular basis.
Culture is not limited to individual family groups. The real strength of culture is in larger community groups. 37 Every society makes rules for itself.
It decides how people should act in different situations. 38 Some are just things that are expected of all members of that society.
Often cultures can be identified by what the people believe.
Cultures are also known by what they choose to include in their art. Sometimes a society forms around people who speak the same language. Cultures may also be known for their customs. 39
Our cultures help us understand who we are and what we believe. There are very strong emotions connecting us to our own society. Two different cultures may disagree on something, especially if they both feel strongly about it. When that happens, war is a common result.
People are learning better ways to communicate with each other. 40
A. It also includes traditions. B. Some of these rules are written down.
C. These larger groups are called societies.
D. However, culture also changes over time.
E. In this way, a group can keep the same traditions for many years.
F. These customs include the foods they make and the things they do.
G. The more we learn, the more we will be able to appreciate the differences in cultures.
