When Sally Millsopp, 53, with her 17-year-old daughter, Eleanor, participated in Race for Life in 2019. She had no idea if she would get to see her mother Jennifer Earnshaw again, who was desperately ill with a form of lung cancer, but she encouraged the pair to take part in the event as she knew the fundraising would help others.
They managed to make it back to her bedside just in time to show her the photographs. Jennifer, who was a former head teacher, passed away the following day, aged 76.
Ms Millsopp and her daughter are once again participating in the Race for Life on May 13 this year to the memory of Jennifer, and will be speaking on stage to inspire others.
“Mum was a selfless person. I knew she really wanted us to do Race for Life but it was hard not knowing if I would be there with her at the end. When we reached the finish line, Eleanor and I both felt elated that we’d done something so positive at such a sad time. We had a big hug and knew it was something Mum would be proud of,” said Ms Millsopp.
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer, but the good news is more people are surviving the disease now than ever before. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women--only series of 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Hiking events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer sooner by funding vital research.
Gemma Turpin, Cancer Research UK’s Norwich event manager, said, “We are very grateful to Sally and Eleanor for their story that highlights how special Race for Life is to people. By following them, women in Norfolk can make a real difference in the fight against cancer. Money raised through Race for Life is helping beat over 200 different types of cancer ——that’s why every step, every person and every penny raised counts.

“I think I’m nothing more than a dead fish.” “I don’t want to do anything.” “I’m so beat and so sad.”... The young generation in our country used to enjoy their “happy culture” but now they have become “beat and sad” slowly and secretly. Some people even called it “the beat culture”. The “Beat” youths don’t want to do anything. They have no purpose, no desire and they are totally depressed so that they only want to live an aimless life. The “Ge You slouch (葛优瘫)” and the song I feel like having been drained are the examples.
Many media concern themselves about this phenomenon and try to persuade the youths into embracing positive and healthy feelings and encourage them to work hard to get rid of decadence. This is really a kind gesture. However, we don’t have to worry too much about this “beat culture.” In fact, it’s not a negative thing. “Beat” never means despair, but a way of self-mockery (自嘲) and pressure relief.
In general, the youths in China are not “beat”. According to a recent international research, the youths in China hold a positive attitude towards the future. 29% of the Chinese interviewees believe they will live and work in peace in China because “as long as you work hard, you can have your own day”. Around 93% of the Chinese interviewees believe the future is promising because of medicine industry, renewable energy sources and computer. Compared with Chinese youngsters, youths in developed countries are more pessimistic.
Of course there are some social reasons for the appearing of “the Beat Culture”. As urbanization develops rapidly, youths living in big cities are facing new challenges that their forefathers have never encountered before. Loneliness and feelings of insignificance and powerlessness are easy to get hold of the young people. Without proper care, they could threaten our mentality and cause many social problems. These problems probably need our attention more.
    28. “The Beat culture” includes the following examples except that
    A. the young generation in big cities are facing new challenges.
    B. the young generation consider themselves dead fish.
    C. the young generation don’t feel like doing anything.
    D. the young generation enjoy the song I feel like having been drained.
    29. Which word has the most similar meaning with “decadence” in Paragraph 2?
    A. sufferings B. laziness C. pessimism D. loneliness
    30. What can we learn from the passage?
    A. Most people believe that with hard work, people can have their own day.
    B. These days, young people suffer much more loneliness than their parents.
    C. Chinese youths are more negative than young people in developed countries.
    D. Social development does bring some pressure to the younger generation.
    31. What’s the main idea of the text?
    A. “The Beat Culture” is popular among the Chinese youngsters.
    B. How does “the Beat Culture” affect the Chinese youth.
    C. The Chinese youths are not the beat generation.
    D. “The Beat Culture” is positive to Chinese youngsters.
    D
There you are in your favorite clothing store. You don’t really need to buy anything, but everything is so cheap and stylish ! Before you know it, you leave the store with bags and bags of new clothes.
On the surface, this doesn’t seem so bad. However, there are a lot of hidden costs behind the cheap price tags put forward by fast fashion brands.
To put it plainly, the fashion industry is terrible for the planet. Not only does it use up a lot of resources, but it also heavily pollutes the environment with chemicals, microplastics and unwanted waste.Fashion is one of the least sustainable (可持续发展的) industries on the planet, commented Michael Stanley-Jones, a program management officer with the United Nations Environment Program. “We’ve all become our own waste managers, hoarding fashion waste in our closets,” he noted. It doesn’t just take up space in our closets, though. It also ends up in landfills , too. In fact, three out of every five garments end up either being incinerated (焚毁) or sent to landfills.
But, thankfully, the fashion trend tides are changing.
People are increasingly examining their own consumption and what changes they can make to become sustainable, Jane Fellner, founder and CEO of sustainable fashion retailer Loopster, told the Guardian. In particular, with its typically lower prices and rare fashion finds, shopping secondhand has become an increasingly popular and eco-friendly option.
According to online reseller ThredUp, the secondhand market is predicted to reach $80 billion (about 518 billion yuan) by 2029. And, although fast fashion will continue to grow 20 percent over the next 10 years, secondhand fashion is expected to grow an unbelievable 185 percent in that same amount of time.
Fellner continued: “Secondhand has become more socially acceptable and, for some, cool. Thrifting (节约) is now massive on TikTok.”
The only true sustainable way to shop is to not shop at all, Rachel Kibbe, a brand consultant for ensuring sustainability in fashion, told Insider. Unless you’re buying clothes that already exist.
    32. What is the main idea of paragraphs 3?
    A. People’s love for fast fashion.
    B. The harm caused by the fashion industry.
    C. The way people waste clothes.
    D. Reasons why fast fashion is cheap.
    33. What does the underlined word “hoarding” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Storing. B. Avoiding. C. Sorting. D. Recycling.
    34. What does Jane Fellner think of secondhand fashion?
    A. It is gaining popularity.
    B. It is huge among young people.
    C. It makes people attractive.
    D. It has defeated fast fashion.
    35. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the article?
    A. To introduce young consumers’ habits.
    B. To inform readers of what is sustainable.
    C. To predict the new fashion trend in 2021.
    D. To show changes in clothing consumption.

    第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
    根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What Can We See in a Logo?
We see hundreds of logos on signs, vehicles, websites, and even on the clothes we wear. All of these logos are designed to attract our attention. 36 However, recently research supports the idea that remembering what a logo looks like is a very difficult task.
Researchers gave 85 students a simple assignment to draw the Apple logo purely from memory. Surprisingly, only one student in the study could accurately draw the logo from memory. 37 Researchers have developed a theory that they think might help to explain this blind spot in our memories.
Logos are typically designed to be simple and easy to recognize with a quick glance. Yet the frequent exposure to these logos can actually make our brains overlook them. This process is known as “attentional saturation (注意力饱和).” 38 Even though the brain is accustomed to ignoring unnecessary details, it is also programmed for recognition. When we see images such as logos over and over again, we become familiar with them. This constant exposure leads to something scientists refer to as gist (梗概) memory. 39 This general sense of memory has its own benefits. In fact, familiarity with a popular logo can even make people feel more comfortable about purchasing or using certain products.
Logos are everywhere we look today. A fancy design or a thoughtful color combination may be a good start for a logo concept, but there are other factors to consider. 40 A clever design may be interesting, but most people will forget the details- especially if our brains have anything to say about it.
    A. This may be inspiring to logo designers.
    B. People will know the product behind the logo.
    C. So why is it so difficult for people to recall the details of images?
    D. They also help us remember a product or service connected to that image.
    E. It means that our brain remembers the basic idea without all of the details.
    F. Our brains actually signal us to ignore information we don't think we will need to remember.
G.Logo designers need to know that people will only remember what they believe is worthwhile.

书面表达 Making Every Day Earth Day
Now the earth is in bad condition. For example, in some places, the air and water pollution is so serious that it causes many deaths. At the same time, many animals and plants are in danger because of the destruction of their habitats.
Luckily, we human beings have realized the problem. On April 22nd, millions of people across the world do something good for the earth. Some clean up beaches and water, some pick up rubbish, others give speeches to call on more people to take action. But can we save the earth only by one day’s work? The future of our planet depends on our efforts. What we should do is to make every day Earth Day. Only by taking good care of it every day can we hope to live in harmony with nature.
