Peple are mre willing t change their mind abut peple they initially hld. Cmmn wisdm hlds that negative first impressins are hard t shake—and sme research backs this up. But such studies ften unfairly cmpare impressins based n immral deeds that are extreme and relatively rare with impressins based n kindnesses that are mre cmmn. A new set f studies invlving precisely balanced behavirs finds that peple are mre willing t change their mind abut individuals wh initially cme ff as selfish than abut thse they think selfless.
In three f the experiments, 336 labratry and nline participants read abut tw peple wh each made a series f 50 decisins regarding hw many electric shcks t give smene in exchange fr mney. One fictinal subject required mre mney per shck than the average persn did t inflict (施加) pain n thers. The ther’s price-per-shck threshld (界限) was cmparably lwer than the average persn’s. Study participants read abut each subject’s decisins ne at a time. Befre seeing each decisin, they predicted what it wuld be. After every three decisins the fictinal subject made, participants rated the individual n a scale frm “nasty” t “nice,” and then specified their cnfidence in the rating.
As expected, participants rated the persn wh gave shcks fr a lwer price as nastier than the higher-price shcker. But they expressed less cnfidence in the “nasty” ratings, and their predictins f hw many shcks that persn wuld give fluctuated (波动) mre. In ther wrds, their beliefs abut the “bad” subject were mre changeable. “A well-designed brain system wuld nt write smene ff cmpletely at the first sign f truble,” says Mlly Crckett, a psychlgist at Yale University.
The test scenaris (情况) are a far cry frm real-wrld interactins. Still, the experiment ffers “a really elegant pattern that drills dwn n a questin that’s s central t ur everyday human life,” says Peter Mende-Siedlecki, a psychlgist at the University f Delaware.
    58. Accrding t the passage, what des the new set f studies find?
    A. Bad first impressins may be lasting.
    B. Bad first impressins are nt set in stne.
    C. Peple ften judge thers by first impressins.
    D. Peple are reluctant t change first impressins.
    59. What are the researchers’ findings based n?
    A. The number f electric shcks smene was given.
    B. Sme specific labratry and nline questinnaires.
    C. Cmparisns between decisins made by tw subjects.
    D. An analysis f infrmatin cllected frm participants.
    60. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 4 means “______”.
    A. very secure B. much different
    C. cmpletely hidden D. almst withdrawn

Fr many, scientific innvatins tend t be welcme advancements that imprve ur lives. Fr sme, hwever, new technlgies bring risk f uselessness, in turn leading t great resistance.
With the climate crisis unflding befre ur eyes, the race is n t find alternatives that will help humanity leave a smaller ftprint n ur planet. Because f animal agriculture’s leading rle as a greenhuse gas emitter, the search fr mre sustainable prtein surces culd be ne such alternative.
As fd tech cmpanies use science t unlck the ptential f plant prteins, they’re prducing increasingly better plant-based meats and milks that lk and taste like the real thing, but with a much lwer carbn ftprint. Sme in the meat industry are supprting the new and investing in these alt-prtein cmpanies.
Fr sme lawmakers, hwever, these innvative prducts dn’t deserve supprt; they deserve restrictin. Missuri State, fr example, recently passed a bill making it a crime punishable by imprisnment fr cmpanies t call their prducts “meat” if they dn’t cme frm an animal.
S why the mania (狂热) ver meat and milk all f a sudden? Was there a cnsumer wh brught hme sme pies labeled “plant-based meat” nly t realize he was tricked? Did cnfused milk-drinkers file cmplaints with the Department f Agriculture when they fund ut their symilk didn’t cntain actual milk?
There really are sme cnsumers wh are truly cnfused. Surveys shw, hwever, that number is remarkably small. If anything, cnsumers are chsing these plant-based prducts specifically because they think they’re better fr them than the riginal prducts. And they have gd reasn t believe that plant-based milks and meats usually have less fat and mre fiber than cmparable animal-based fds.
S, cnsumers aren’t cnfusing “veggie bacn” fr real bacn; and if they dn’t think chicken nuggets have the same nutritinal value as “chicken-free nuggets”, then why d sme meat and milk grups want a mnply (垄断) ver the M-wrds? Culd it have t d with the fact that the increasing ppularity f these fds, which are mre sustainable and better fr yu, is threatening the prfits f their cnstituents?
And with the future f ur civilizatin hanging in the balance as climate change becmes mre severe, it’s time fr plicy makers t stp trying t prevent innvatin, and instead t celebrate all the ways science can save us, including with sustainable prteins that can and d prduce new kinds f meat.
    61. What can be learned abut the M-wrd applied t plant-based substitutes?
    A. They are envirnmentally friendly.
    B. They are innvative and widely accepted.
    C. They have been restricted acrss America.
    D. They have been prduced in large quantities.
    62. Frm the passage we can learn that cnsumers ______.
    A. have sufficient faith in new science and technlgy
    B. prefer the riginal prducts t the plant-based prducts
    C. buy the plant-based prducts fr their great benefit t health
    D. ften get cnfused by the cmpsitin f the new kind f meat
    63. Accrding t the authr, sme peple resist the new kind f fd prbably because _____.
    A. it cntains n real meat
    B. it brings risks t sciety
    C. it plays a trick n custmers
    D. it pses a threat t their prfits
    64. What’s the authr’s attitude twards the plant-based prducts?
    A. Supprtive. B. Cautius.
    C. Ambiguus. D. Disapprving
    D
As Jhn Gerge remembers it, the Detrit neighbrhd he grew up in was straight ut f Frank Capra’s It’s a Wnderful Life. “We knew all ur neighbrs,” Gerge, 60, tld Detrit’s Metr Times. “On Christmas Eve, we’d all g t midnight Mass, and there wuld be 300 peple in ur huse at ne ’clck t abut five in the mrning. The flks were just really gd, hardwrking peple.”
By the ’80s, hwever, the ld neighbrhd was mre Pttersville than Bedfrd Falls. Due in part t ecnmic dwnturns and a natinwide drug epidemic (泛滥), well-kept hmes had been abandned and kindly neighbrs had fled t the suburbs. But nt Gerge. “Living in any city, it’s like being in a relatinship,” he tld Reader’s Digest. “Sme days are better than thers. But it was my hme. And when I saw it deterirating, I had tw chices: I culd leave, r I culd stay and fight. I decided t stay and fight.”
When the abandned hme behind his turned int a crack den, the father f tw grabbed sme plywd and nails and began barding up the huse. After tw neighbrs stpped t ask what he was ding, they decided t help, with great results. “When the drug dealers came back, they turned arund and went hme,” says Gerge. “That’s hw it all gt started.”
“It” is Detrit Blight Busters, r DBB, an rganizatin f civic-minded vlunteers devted t reviving the city they lve, ne abandned huse, ne vacant lt, and ne garbage-strewn park at a time.
In the 30 years since that first hme rescue, an army f apprximately 182,000 vlunteers, alng with crprate and private dnrs, has helped Gerge destry arund 300 abandned hmes, mstly in the prer Nrthwest area f Detrit. They’ve als secured 400-sme hmes by barding them up, thus keeping bad actrs ut. They’ve painted and renvated nearly 900 hmes and built ver 100 frm scratch. Accrding t Frbes, mre than 1,000 Detriters have been hused as a result f DBB’s wrk.
“I’m half Lebanese, half Italian, and 100 percent Detrit stubbrn,” Gerge tld natinswell.cm. “Once we get smething in ur heart and in ur head, it’s almst autpilt.”
But that was nly the beginning. In 2003, Gerge als breathed life int a dilapidated (破旧的) square mile f Detrit by turning it int Artist Village, an area nw filled with galleries, a perfrmance space, cmmunity gardens, a cffee shp, and utdr curtyards. Because this regin f Nrth Detrit was a fd desert, Gerge als persuaded a supermarket chain t mve int the neighbrhd.
“Blight is like a cancer: If yu dn’t set upn it, it will spread,” Gerge tld thehubdetrit.cm. And then there’s Hallween. In Detrit, Octber 30 was ruefully knwn as Devil’s Night, a perid when all hell wuld break lse in the frm f crime and vandalism. In respnse, Gerge created a citizens’ patrl (巡逻队) that wuld take t the streets, keeping an eye n suspicius behavir. He called it Angels’ Night. What began with 12 neighbrs n patrl in 1990 has grwn t mre than 60,000 citywide.
Gerge’s inspired ideas have nt gne unnticed by the city he lves. “Jhn wants t shw that there is still smething t Detrit. That it’s still wrth it,” says real estate agent Rbert LaBute. And thers are buying int it. “We’re seeing the trend f yunger hmewners cming in.”
Is Gerge prud f having bsted his nce-ailing hmetwn? Yu’d better believe he is. As he puts it: “We are n the frnt prch f the greatest urban cmeback stry in this natin’s histry.”
    65. Why was Jhn Gerge reluctant t leave Detrit?
    A. He wanted t save his city.
    B. He enjyed a wnderful life.
    C. He stayed t fight against drugs.
    D. He gt alng with his neighbrs.
    66. What was the result f the first hme rescue?
    A. An fficial rganizatin was funded.
    B. A vluntary mvement began with it.
    C. A better neighbr relatinship was frmed.
    D. The drug dealers mended their ways at last.

    请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
    注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案写在答题卡上相应题号的横线上。
Why D Smart Peple D Flish Things?
We all prbably knw smene wh is intelligent but des surprisingly stupid things. What des it mean t be smart r intelligent? Our everyday use f the term is meant t describe smene wh is knwledgeable and makes wise decisins, but this definitin is at dds with hw intelligence is traditinally measured. The mst widely knwn measure f intelligence is the intelligence qutient, mre cmmnly knwn as the IQ test, which includes visuspatial puzzles, math prblems, pattern recgnitin, vcabulary questins and visual searches.
The advantages f being intelligent are undeniable. Intelligent peple are mre likely t get better grades and g farther in schl. They are mre likely t be successful at wrk. And they are less likely t get int truble (fr example, cmmit crimes) as adlescents.
Given all the advantages f intelligence, thugh, yu may be surprised t learn that it des nt predict ther life utcmes, such as well-being. Yu might imagine that ding well in schl r at wrk might lead t greater life satisfactin, but several large-scale studies have failed t find evidence that IQ impacts life satisfactin r lngevity (长寿). Mst intelligence tests fail t assess the extent f ratinal thinking, such as real-wrld decisin-making and ur ability t interact well with thers. This is, in ther wrds, perhaps why “smart” peple d “dumb” things.
The ability t think critically, n the ther hand, has been assciated with wellness and lngevity. Thugh ften cnfused with intelligence, critical thinking is nt intelligence. Critical thinking is a cllectin f cgnitive (认知的) skills that allw us t think ratinally (理性地) in a gal-rientated fashin and a dispsitin t use thse skills when apprpriate. Critical thinkers have self-cnfidence in their wn abilities t reasn. They pssess great flexibility in requiring evidence t supprt their beliefs. Critical thinking means vercming all kinds f cgnitive biases (偏见).
Critical thinking predicts a wide range f life events. Researchers have fund that critical thinkers experience fewer negative life events such as academic (“I frgt abut an exam”), health (“I received HIV thrugh unprtected sex”), legal (“I was arrested fr driving under the influence”), interpersnal (“I cheated n my partner fr mre than a year”), financial (“I have ver $5,000 f credit-card debt”), and s n.
Intelligence and imprving intelligence are ht tpics that receive a lt f attentin. It is time fr critical thinking t receive a little mre f that attentin. Reasning and ratinality mre clsely resemble what we mean when we say a persn is smart rather than spatial skills and math ability. Furthermre, imprving intelligence is difficult. Intelligence is largely determined by genetics. Critical thinking, thugh, can imprve with training, and the benefits have been shwn t cntinue ver time. Anyne can imprve their critical thinking skills. Ding s, we can say with certainty, is a smart thing t d.
