Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors (流星),but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth.Light gets through the atmosphere, which is necessary for plants to make the food we eat.Heat, too, makes our environment endurable (可以忍受的).Various kinds of rays come through the atmosphere from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off.As soon as men leave the atmosphere, they are exposed to this radiation but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft,if they are inside,do prevent a lot of radiation damage.
Radiation is the biggest danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called “rem”.Scientists have reason to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged;the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on.The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about the radiation damage because a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her reproductive organs may be damaged.
Flights of the Apollo Missions have had to cross belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo crew accumulated (积累) a large amount of rems.So far,no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo Missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory.Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the high speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.
Road politeness means not only good manners, but also having senses. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to fight back when they are forced to face rude driving. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarreling and fighting.A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and becomes so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviours of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognise politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. There is a typical example where the driver waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road whenever and wherever they want to.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in the traffic stream without causing the total blockage that gives rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone mastering the roadmanship.Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take (互谅互让) from all road users. It is high time that we took this message to heart.

No matter where you are, knowing how to protect yourself and your family during an earthquake is necessary. Here are some tips for you.
Duck,Drop,Cover and Hold
Duck under a strong piece of furniture,if possible. Most earthquake injuries are the result of being hit by something falling on you.Drop to the floor to avoid falling or being thrown down. And protect you from flying glass.Use clothes, blankets, cushions or furniture for covering.Hold on to whatever you’re using,as the ground motion may be violent.Get away from glass, bookcases or anything heavy that could fall over on you.
Stay away from the Doors
Doorways used to be recommended but most experts now say: stay away from them.Doors can suddenly shut with bone crushing force.Anyway, the experts say that in modern construction a doorway is no stronger than any other location along the wall.
Try to Run Outside
While the ground is moving, the greatest danger is of being injured by taking a fall or being hit by a falling piece of building as you exit.If you smell gas or when the shaking stops, calmly, carefully make your way out and get clear of the building. Before you leave, get shoes on because you will be walking on broken glass. If you’re in a crowd, stay calm, and take what can cover you and find where you are.In a crowd the greatest dangers are panic and the rush for an exit.
1.Which of the following is TRUE about earthquakes?

由Duck,Drop,Cover and Hold中的“Use clothes,blankets,cushions or furniture for covering.”
Stay away from the Doors中的“but most experts now say: stay away from them”可知,但现在大多数专家说:离它们远点。 故suggest(建议)最能解释recommend。

One Sunday,Nicholas went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home,a fierce snowstorm swept into the area.Unable to see far,he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it,Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water,a phone,or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was.He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV.It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put.The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow.If he didn’t,his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.Using his skis,Nicholas built a snow cave.He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket,to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening,Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last,Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day,Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter,he could die that night. On Tuesday,Nicholas went out again to find help.He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him.Having been stuck in the snow for two days,Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV.He had often watched a survival show. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. When the host of the show heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds,he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.
4.What caused Nicholas to get lost at the mountain?
A.Having no guides to help.
B.Forgetting the way back.
C.Terrible weather.
D.Poor eyesight.
5.How did Nicholas keep himself warm?
A.He built a snow cave.
B.He found a shelter.

D.He made a fire.
6.Why was the survival show mentioned?
A.It was Nicholas’ favourite TV program.
B.It taught Nicholas useful knowledge.

D.The host asked Nicholas to make a TV interview.
根据第一段中的“One Sunday,Nicholas...Before he knew it,Nicholas was lost,all alone!”
根据第三段中“He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out ...,to stay as warm as he could.”
根据最后一段中“He had often watched a survival show. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life.”

The earthquake happened at 4:31 a.m. on January 17th,1994 in Los Angeles.I was suddenly woken up and thrown out of bed.Power was already out and the only way out was to step on broken glass and trip over broken bricks.I held my son and we managed to get out of the building from the sixth floor.
Though we made it outside alive,we were badly injured. We were bruised badly as this quake was a shallow one which is the worst type because it threw everything up and down.We looked as if we were physically beaten by someone. The ligaments (韧带) in my feet were torn from falling and my right foot swelled (肿胀) up to the thickness of my neck!I was so frightened then that I felt little pain until about 45 minutes later!
It was noisy outside and all people were in great fear. After the earthquake,it wasn’t until days and weeks later that people started going back home.We were afraid another one might come. For us,we went back inside after about a week. The whole apartment was in a big mess and we had to dig our way back inside.
Later we learnt from TV reports that the earthquake killed about 64 people that morning. It would have been worse if it happened just a bit later!
Though we had some earthquake insurance,we never fully recovered everything, but that was not what I really cared about, after the earthquake. The earthquake made me realise that life can change so quickly in a moment.I decided to live every day to the fullest after the earthquake. Now I treasure every day that I spend with my family.

Dust storms don’t just happen in the middle of the desert. They happen in any dry area where loose dirt can easily be picked up.The sand blown into the air by the wind usually falls back down to the ground after a few hours.Smaller bits of particles (微粒) stay in the air for a week or longer and can be blown thousands of miles away.Dust from the Sahara is always blown across the Atlantic and keeps travelling as far as Caribbean.
The scary thing about sandstorm is that they can spread over hundreds of miles and rise over 10,000 feet (305 metres). They also have wind speeds of at least 25 miles per hour (40 km).Not strong enough to blow the feathers off a chicken but still something worth avoiding.
Don’t be surprised if you suddenly see a dust storm heading your way.Dust storms usually arrive without warning and move in the form of a big wall of dust. The dust makes driving impossible.Often they only last for a few minutes but storms usually leave serious car accidents behind. If you are in a car during a dust storm, remind the driver to pull over and turn off the headlights.
In mild (轻微的) dust storms,it’s still impossible to walk around although you wouldn’t want to.You can’t see anything because of the dust particles flying around. It’s not just the dust you want to avoid. The wind carrying the dust will leave things as if they were just hit by a tornado. The best thing is to find a safe place in a building.

I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean.Growing up in Australia,I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay,I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday,my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colours, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me.When I learned that only 1 percent of Australian’s Coral Sea was protected,I was shocked.Australian marine life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45 percent of the world’s reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing,so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco-system has led me to take action.I’ve become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the
ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together,Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement.Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy,who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.

When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces,I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake.
That afternoon,my dad had stood on the deck (屋后供休息的木制平台) of our home and laughed as our neighbours packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in hotels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of the approaching summer storm.

Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements.Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cottage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind.
“Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled(爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage.Between the deck supports,we watched the approaching storm in silent terror.
My dad shouted,“Hold on!”and something else I couldn’t hear over the screaming wind.By the time it reached our cottage,it was nothing more than a strong wind. The rest of the storm lasted for an hour and then simply blew away.

You might take a car,a bus,or a bike to school. But in Bangladesh, instead of waiting for a school bus to come down their street, many students wait for a school boat to come down the river. That’s right—these students attend school on a boat!
Bangladesh is very close to sea level.36. The flooding creates many problems. For the nearly 160 million people living there the periodic flooding means that they are often unable to access roads, electricity,or telephones.
Growing up in Bangladesh,Mohammed Rezwan was often troubled by these disruptions(破坏).37. The name means “self-reliance (自力更生).” The purpose of the organisation is to help the people of Bangladesh receive an education and also to bring technology and an improved quality of life to poor people in remote areas of the country. In 2002,Rezwan began transforming boats into schools. Each boat was built to house between 30 and 35 students. The boats had everything you might find in a regular classroom. The only difference was that they floated on a river.
38. Today Rezwan and his organisation operate 88 boats in northern Bangladesh.About half the boats are used as schools, and the other half are used as temporary houses during the flood season. In addition to the schools and the temporary housing, there are also a floating technology and training centre,a library that allows students to check out books, and a health-care centre. The school boats travel along the rivers and pick up students for classes that include computer technology, agriculture, and human rights.
At night the boats provide additional learning opportunities for students and adults.39. They study using solar lamps that are charged during the day at stations near the river.Special equipment on the boats also projects lessons onto big screens made from sailcloth.People can come down to the river bank to watch films. In all, these boats help educate close to 90,000 families in Bangladesh.
By floating down the rivers, the school boats provide more than books.
40. “This ‘library’ boat inspired me,” said 18-year-old student Shanto Islam, who enjoys reading science fiction books.“I started to dream.” Islam now wants to attend a university.

One possible version:
Dear Tom,
How are you doing? When I watched the news on TV,I learned that a terrible earthquake happened in your city.I was really concerned about you and your family.
I’m so sorry to hear about the disaster. It caused six deaths and left more than five hundred persons injured. What’s worse,20 persons were missing and over two hundred houses fell down.I hope that none of your family members was injured.
Please don’t be worried.Everything will be fine.If you need any help, please let me know.As one of your best friends,I will do what I can to help you.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Lin
How many of us could go a week without our cell phone?Do you even bother to memorise phone numbers any more?Technology has made life so convenient for us.However,we have to face facts:Technology has made us lazy and dependent.
What’s the point of getting up,taking a shower, getting dressed, and driving to the movies when you can just sit on the couch and fire up TV? We’ve all been there before. You’re on the fence about whether or not you want to get out and do something, but then something comes over you.You start looking around at your smart phone and laptop, then realise you can have just as much fun staying in the house.
Is it even possible to get lost anymore? I get the feeling that we’re getting closer and closer to the day when people won’t even be able to read paper maps anymore. There are already a lot of young adults that have no idea how to navigate (导航) through their own cities without using a BDS.Being able to print out complete turn by turn directions for where you need to go on a map app pretty much killed the need for a map.
We have all searched something that we were completely embarrassed we
didn’t know the answer to.According to search engine,“How to tie a tie” gets over 500,000 searches a month.Exactly,a quick search on search engine will bring up instructional videos, blog posts, and PDFs that show you how to do anything. So much for being self sufficient.
Running errands (跑腿) used to take up entire Saturday mornings.By the time you got home, you were tired and just wanted to relax.Well thanks to online shopping and services, running your own errands is a thing of the past.
I’m definitely part of the problem here because I love online shopping. But I can admit that it has made me somewhat lazy.
