He tld me t WAIT in his rm while they ate!” an Internet user shared n a media platfrm. Cnsequently, there was a lt f criticism f the Swedes. Many said they wuldn't dream f being s mean in their culture. Wuld a hst in Sweden really nt invite a guest t jin their meal if it's dinnertime?
I des happen, says Richard Tellstrm, a fd histrian at Stckhlm University. He says this s-called “nn-hspitality” was custmary when he was a kid in the ’60s and ’70s. If he was ver a friend's huse and it was time fr dinner, he wuld g back t his wn huse t eat. Or he wuld stay and wait in anther rm while his friend finished his meal. Then they'd cntinue playing.
“Sme Swedes think feeding a guest creates a sense f duty.” explains Tellstrm. “And in a sciety that values equality and independence, peple dn't want t put a burden n smene r feel like they we smene smething.” Hwever, it wasn't a universal rule. Families in the cuntryside, fr example, were mre likely t feed guests. Peple lived farther apart, s it wasn't as easy fr peple t g hme and eat. The “n dinner fr yu” plicy has slwly faded, says Tellstrm. “Since the 1990s, fd has becme a new symbl in sciety. We have pen kitchens. Peple like t dine there and shw ff their cking.”
But nn-sharing hsts haven't entirely disappeared, says Mhini Mehta, a fd schlar. She admits she had a tugh time adjusting t life in Sweden when she mved there in 2020. She was used t cking dine every day fr friends and hsting dinner parties almst weekly in India. She learned that in sme cultures, like her wn, sharing a meal with smene is a way t break the ice—but this isn't always the case fr Swedes.
