As a by, I wanted t g t the Suth Ple. As a teenager, I decided I'd like t g t the Nrth Ple t. And yet, I haven't dne either. It had taken me 31 years t just make it t the Arctic.
I was travelling with a film crew frm Nrthern Ireland, fllwing the ftsteps f Lrd Dufferin wh, in the 1850s, sailed frm Sctland t the Arctic. As an early adventure turist, he was driven by the desire t see what lay at the ends f the wrld.

My childhd interest in the Suth Ple was fuelled by the unsuccessful yet heric adventures f Ernest Shackletn. He died in 1922 while preparing fr his furth adventure. The stries f Rbert Falcn Sctt are als well­knwn: he and fur cmpanins died n their way back frm the Suth Ple.
S why d explrers put themselves at such risk?
Much f it seems t lie in the purity f the challenge. Sctt talked f the appeal f a place that had been “unreached and unseen by humans”. “With a view ver shining lands cvered by ice­sheets f incnceivable extent, yu have the feeling f living ver the cntrl f death，” said Fridtjf Nansen, a Nrwegian explrer.
On the hmeward jurney the weather turned and we were left fr a few days at the mercy f a strm. We experienced a small taste f helplessness when faced with the raw pwer f nature. We shuld be grateful fr the great explrers' spirit and stries. I knw I am.
