Mitchel Wu creates interesting stories using toy photography, a relatively new art form. He's taken photos for an impressive list of clients, including Disney, Marvel, Hot Wheels, and Hasbro. There's no limit to creativity, and Mitchel proves it through his unique work, providing a one-of-a-kind experience for clients worldwide.
While toy photography dates back to the 1800s, it didn't gain popularity until the 1970s. Around this time, a man by the name of David Levinthal became the father of miniature (微型画) photography.
Over time, it evolved into a global phenomenon mostly involving action figures and pop culture imagery. It's a diverse art form containing many themes and story ideas. Many artists draw inspiration from popular sources such as Disney movies, Star Wars, and Pokemon characters. With toy photography, the viewers, completely immersed in the story, feel like they're actually there, in a different land.
"For me, toy photography is really all about storytelling," Mitchel says. "Storytelling is what makes an image impactful, so my goal is to have my image just stop you in your tracks and make you think 'Wow, what's going on here?'”
Mitchel was a wedding photographer in the beginning. In 2015, he realized that he needed to find something else. Right around the same time, his nephew who photographed toys as a hobby said, "Uncle Mitch, why don't you bring your camera and shoot some toys?"
Once he tried it out, he got hooked immediately. His nephew lent him a couple of Stormtrooper action figures, and from the very first click of the shutter (快门), he found it was something incredible.
What began as a hobby quickly became a new-found career for Mitchel. It's yet another story that motivates us to pursue our dreams because you never know where they'll take you.
It seems the only limits are the ones you create for yourself. Mitchel tries to keep breaking those limits and learn new techniques in his exciting career path. His story shows that you can create your path in life by following your heart and using your imagination.
4. Which of the following is true according to the first three paragraphs?

Climate change is an ongoing and ever-present threat to the Earth and all living things upon it. Unchecked industrialism and the burning of fossil fuels have resulted in the creation of harmful greenhouse gases. Human greed has led to massive deforestation and clearcutting of forests to make way for farmland. Pollution blocks our rivers, lakes, and oceans. The point of no return may be fast approaching.
After decades of harmful actions, many governments and businesses are now struggling to find ways to lessen some of their destructive effects and reach net-zero, which means not adding to the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. One of the ways they proposed was the extensive tree-planting. The UK government, for example, has set out its plan to plant 30,000 hectares of trees annually so as to absorb carbon dioxide.
However, according to Oxfam, a British charity devoted to helping people in poor countries, those plans never bore fruit. It issued clear and strong warnings against them—the area needed for a tree-planting project of this scale to successfully lower carbon emissions to net-zero is estimated at 1.6 billion hectares, which is an area five times the size of India. That means the project would intrude (侵占)on the land presently needed to grow enough crops to feed the world's expanding population.
Such a massive campaign of turning farmland into forest could give rise to a global interruption to agriculture, and cause food prices to rise by as much as 80% by 2050. In a world where millions of people are already going hungry, this could have disastrous results. By trying to save the planet, governments and businesses may cause many millions of people to die of starvation. This paradox (悖论)perfectly illustrates the phrase "damned if you do, and damned if you don't".
8. The author mentions the UK government to show ______.
A. the outbreak of climate disasters has its economic reasons
B. there is still some doubt whether the UK can reach net-zero
C. countries and companies are trying to deal with climate change
D. net-zero makes sense only when all countries make joint efforts
9. What is Oxfam's attitude towards the extensive tree-planting?
A. Confident. B. Critical. C. Favorable. D. Unclear.
10. What is the paradox associated with the plans for tree-planting?
A. A vast area of the forest would burn down instead.
B. Bigger forests could result in a population explosion.
C. India would lose 1.6 billion hectares of agricultural land.
D. Planting trees could lead to the starvation of millions of people.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Catch-22 of Net-zero
B. New Responses to Climate Change
C. Planting Trees for a Better-fed World
D. The Control of Greenhouse Gas Emission
D
A blood test that accurately predicts a patient's likelihood of dying from heart disease or a stroke (中风) has been developed.
Researchers took samples of blood from 22,949 people and analyzed the levels of about 5,000 proteins within it. They then used machine learning to detect whether there was a link between the proteins that circulate in a person's bloodstream and their risk of heart disease. The study identified a particular "protein signature" that accurately predicts the chance of suffering a heart attack, stroke or heart failure over a four-year period.
Currently, doctors assess the likelihood of patients suffering heart problems by looking at factors including weight, blood pressure, age and cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. However, blood protein analysis can provide more accurate clues to the state of a person's health. The technology was found to be twice as accurate as existing tools at measuring a patient's heart risk. The blood test could also provide a faster way of detecting whether patients' existing medication (药物治疗) is working and helping to reduce their risk. Existing risk assessments struggle to do this.
The blood test was developed by SomaLogic, based in Boulder, Colorado. The company is also working with scientists at Imperial College London to help develop a blood test to detect cancer. Professor Elio Riboli said this could lead to widespread screening for many different types of cancers, which is not possible using existing techniques. His team will work with SomaLogic to analyze 15,000 blood samples from people who had developed cancer, comparing them with 10,000 samples from people who did not. The results will be used to establish whether there are protein markers that could indicate if someone is at risk from the disease.
In 2019, a trial began in Leeds to use SomaLogic's technology to assess people's risk of diabetes, and also the effectiveness of lifestyle changes in preventing the condition. Dr. Michael Messenger, head of the Leeds Centre for Personalized Medicine and Health, said that it could help tailor treatments to individual patients. "Personalized medicine lets us take a deeper look at each person's individual biology, so we can better understand what the right advice or treatment, at the right time, might be."
12. What can be learned from the second paragraph?
A. About 5,000 proteins exist in people's blood.
B. Different methods were adopted in the research.
C. Altogether 22,949 people volunteered for the study.
D. The "protein signature" in the blood causes heart diseases.
13. How is the third paragraph developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By making classifications.
C. By making comparisons. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
14. What can be learned from the passage?
A. Personalized medicine is becoming a tendency.
B. Protein markers will indicate some risks of cancer.
C. SomaLogic's technology will have a wider application.
D. Blood protein analysis is most advanced in predicting diseases.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. New approaches to doing blood tests.
B. An easy way to prevent deadly diseases.
C. The advantages of blood protein analysis.
D. A blood test to predict the risk of heart attack death.

五、任务型读写(本大题共1小题,共25分)
37. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
May 18, 1986, was the kind of beautiful, sunny day that regularly brought the Rodriguez family to Santa Catalina Island for some fishing on their nine-metre pleasure boat, the DC Too. They spent the day fishing in the Pacific Ocean, then left the island in the early evening.
Soon thick fog rolled in. Louise fell into a light sleep beside her five-year-old sister, Trisha, at a table on the boat's lower deck. Their father's sharp orders frightened her awake, "Get out of the boat. It's sinking!" Louise pushed her sister into the cold, dark water. The girls were followed by their mother, Petra Rodriguez. Both girls wore life jackets, but the adults did not. Within seconds, the boat capsized, leaving just the tip of its bow in the air.
After some time, her father told them he would swim for help. Louise watched him disappear into the darkness. A while later, her mother went still. Then her sister died, too.
Pisano and Strasser, both 25, were going on a fishing expedition. The fog was so thick that they couldn't even see the stern(船尾) of the boat. They decided to try one more spot before going home. Late that afternoon, the fog cleared and the sun started shining. On their return voyage, about 11 kilometres away from Catalina Island, Pisano noticed something yellow floating in the water.
Strasser steered(驾驶) the boat closer and Pisano jumped into the water. He swam toward the figure and grabbed the life jacket. Fortunately, Louise was saved and quickly sent to hospital. The little girl soon recovered, but the search for Louise's father, sister and mother was in vain.
Louise was adopted by her aunt and uncle. She attended college, got married in 2013 and gave birth to a son. In her late 20s, Louise began to wonder about her rescuers. She even tried to find them but no luck. One day, Louise came across a magazine article featuring Pisano talking about the 1986 rescue.

For a very long time, she had been expecting a chance to meet Pisano and Strasser personally and express her gratitude to her rescuers. Without any delay, she contacted the magazine, asking for the detailed information of Pisano. That evening, Louise finally dialed the number. When there came the voice of Pisano, Louise could feel her heart beating wildly. Though it was about 1,000 kilometers from where Pisano lived, Louise was determined to fly to meet Pisano.
Louise recognized her rescuer the moment she saw Pisano. Taking a deep breath, Louise stepped forward and grasped the hands of Pisano tightly. "I'm Louise", she said, her voice trembling with excitement and tears rolling down her cheeks. Pisano, now in his sixties, hugged Louise and patted her gently.
