I felt very sad because I was not able to get the ticket to the film Hero last Friday. I learned from the newspaper that tickets could be bought at the cinema box office in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 a. m. and 4:00 p. m. Since I work from 9:00 a. m. to 5:30 p. m. , the only time I could go to the cinema is during my 45 minutes’ lunchtime. It is a pity that the cinema is on the other side of the town and the bus service between my company and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes.
Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for a bus. By the time I saw one come round the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip, so I had to go back. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. On Thursday my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the cinema in twenty minutes. But when I got there, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man said he had been waiting in line for over an hour. I found I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and went back across the town.
By Friday I understood my only hope was to make the trip by car. It was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to see the film. The trip by car only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I reached the cinema, I was delighted to see that nobody was waiting in line. But I quickly found out that it was because they had already sold out all the tickets.

Do you want to make friends with others? Please remember to keep your words all the time. In this way, people around you will get along well with you.
To make friends and keep them, you have to keep your words. If you agree to meet someone at a certain time, you should arrive at the place on time or a little earlier. If you agree to help others, you must do it. Of course if there is something unexpected(没有预料到的) happening and you can’t do what you have agreed to do, your friends will understand this.

Do you get angry when your friends sing loudly? Or when your best friend does not wait for you after school?
If you do, you need to control(控制) your feelings and stop getting angry so easily. Getting angry easily can make you lose friends.
Gary Egeberg, an American high school teacher, wrote My Feelings are Just Like Wild Animals to help you control your feelings. It tells teens how to stay cool when bad things happen to them. The book says that getting angry only makes problems worse. It can not make them better. “Getting angry is not a natural way to act”, the book says. It is just a bad habit, like smoking. The book says you can control your anger easily, and all you have to do is to tell yourself not to be angry.
When a baby falls over, it cries only when people are watching it. Like a baby, you can only get angry if you are sure it is the right thing to do.
The book gives many suggestions to help you if you get angry easily. Here are the top three.
①Keep a record. Every time you get angry, write down why you are angry. Look at it later and you will see you get angry too easily.
②Ask your friends to stop talking to you when you get angry. This will teach you not to be angry.

In your life, there are a lot of people around you. They are your relatives, neighbors, friends or classmates. Sometimes you get along well with them, but sometimes don’t. What can you do when someone hurts you? Most people may be angry or even fight with him. But it’s not a good idea. You’d better forget all this and forgive(宽恕,原谅) him.
Maybe it’s not easy for you to do that, but it’s possible. Please remember: Keep a good mood, and you will keep healthy. Staying angry with others, in fact, means letting others’ mistakes treat yourself unfairly.
    How can you forgive others?
First, think of something pleasant and try to get yourself happy.
Second, don’t wait others to say sorry to you. If anyone hurts you, he won’t say sorry to you. He may just want to hurt you or just don’t see things the same way.
Third, try to see things in others’ shoes. You can understand their minds better and make yourself a little happier.
At last, try to know yourself very well. Whose mistakes caused that, yours or others’? If it’s your fault, try to say sorry to them. If it isn’t, smile at the thing.

I used to be an active girl. But two years ago, an English speaking competition held in my school changed me a lot.
I stood on the stage(讲台) for the first time. I was so nervous that my brain(大脑) suddenly became empty. Not long after I began my speech, the hall turned noisy. It seemed that they were laughing at me. I knew I failed.
From then on, I became quiet and always stayed alone. I didn’t want to express my ideas in public, even in class. Every time I wanted to say something, I thought people would laugh at me. My friends couldn’t understand me, and they left me, one by one.
One day, my science teacher asked us why trees in forests were much taller than those in the wild. “Ha, what a silly question!” I thought.
“There’s not enough space in the woods for trees to expand their branches. Of course they have to grow taller than others. The trees in the wild needn’t do that since there’s enough space. ” I said in a low voice.
To my surprise, the teacher said, “Yes, you’re right. It is a competition. ” My face turned red right now. I hadn’t spoken for a long time, especially in public.
Then the teacher explained how trees in forests had to grow taller to receive more sunlight. If not, they would die. This also happened in our society.
What’s more, the tree that doesn’t live in a crowd is just like a person who has no friends in life.
I raised my head slowly and found the teacher was looking at me. His eyes were as warm as sunshine. I realized that I must stand up and face the truth.

When you are in Hong Kong, you must be very careful in the streets, because the traffic drives on the left. It is different from that in other areas of China.
If this is the first time you have come to Hong Kong, you must look to the right side and then the left before you cross the street. If the traffic lights are red, the traffic must stop. People on foot can cross the road carefully. But if the traffic lights are green, the traffic can go. People on foot mustn’t cross.
When people go to or come back from work in the morning or evening, the streets are very busy. Traffic is the most dangerous, especially for the children.

Many people like to travel by plane, but I don’t like it because the airport is usually far from the city. You have to get there early and wait for hours for the plane to take off which is often late. You can’t open the windows. You can’t choose the food. Planes are fast, but it still takes hours to get out of the airport and into the city.
I like travelling by train. I think trains are safe. Railway stations are usually good in cities. When you are late for a train, you can catch another one. You can walk around in the train and open the windows. You can see many interesting things on your way, though it takes a little more time.
I also like cars. You can start your journey whenever you want to, and you don’t need to get to a railway station or a bus stop. Also you can carry many things with you in a car. But sometimes there are too many cars on the road.

F1 is a very fast car race. It is one of the most popular sports in the world. The drivers go at over 300 kilometers an hour every race. But F1 cars didn’t always go so fast.
In 1895, the first F1 race began in France. During that race, it took the drivers 48 hours to finish 580 kilometers. In 1901, the best drivers had an average(平均) speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Modern grand prix(奖品) F1 racing began in 1950 in Britain. “Grand prix” is French. It means “large prize”. Today, 12 teams and 24 drivers race to get points. There are races at different tracks(路线) all over the world from March to October every year. There are also F2 and F3 racing. But the cars are slower and less high-tech.
During a F1 race, drivers have to make several stops to change tyres(轮胎) and put more petrol in their cars. A team of people do these tasks together to make the stops short. Some people lift the car up, others change the tyres. While this person works on the tyres, another person puts petrol in the car and a different person cleans the driver’s helmet. One more person talks to the driver about how to win. It’s amazing that all those people finish it in just a few seconds!
During 100-meter races, people count the players’ speed by 1/100th(0. 01) of a second, for example 10.81 seconds. In the world of car racing, however, the race has to be timed to 1/1000th (0. 001) of a second. That is 50 times faster than the time for a blink(眨眼).
F1 cars look very colorful. First, cars of different teams have different colors. Then there are a lot of advertisements on the cars.

When you’re invited to have dinner at a foreigner’s home, please remember the followings.
At the table, when the hostess(女主人) picks up her napkin, you may pick up yours and put it on your legs.
If a servant(佣人) passes food around, he will pass the dish to you at your left hand so that you can easily serve yourself with your right hand. Never serve yourself while the dish is on your right. It is then the turn of your neighbour on the right.
Do not reach across the table to get something in front of someone. That is not polite. Ask him or her to pass it to you.
There are things in the middle of the table, such as bread, butter, and candies. You shouldn’t take any until the hostess tells the servant to pass them to you.

Dumplings are traditional Chinese food. On the lunar New Year’s Day, most families make a lot of delicious dumplings. To make them, we can follow these easy steps.
The first step is to mix the flour(面粉) with water. When the dough(面团) is ready, we can begin to make dumpling wrappers(薄皮). We roll the dough into small, thin and round pieces so that they can be easy to cook. Then it’s time to prepare the filling(馅), usually, we use meat such as beef or pork, and some vegetables for filling. Remember to cut these things into small pieces, put some salt and oil into it and mix them.
When all these are done, we can start making dumplings. First put a spoonful of filling in the center of the wrappers. Then stick(粘) the two opposite sides together. There are also a lot of foreign restaurants, such as Italian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese and so on. A good restaurant is usually big and clean. Waiters and waitresses wear uniforms and are friendly and polite. When you are eating, you might hear gentle music. Small restaurants or fast-food restaurants are noisier but clean and pleasant, too.

If you are a college student who will leave school soon, before starting a job, you have to buy some new clothes. And you’d better have a look at“what everyone else is wearing”in the office. On certain(某种) kinds of business occasions men wear only suits with white shirts and dark ties. On others, men can wear jackets.

One of the problems career people(上班族) have in the morning is dressing for the office when there will be an evening party immediately followed, with no time to return home to change. The easiest solution is to keep a full set of toiletries(洗漱用品) and make-ups stored somewhere at the office. A woman going to an evening party should dress in one of her “basic dresses” in the morning—the kind that can change into a different look with an added scarf or jewelry. In fifteen minutes, when her office day has ended, she can metamorphose(彻底变化) herself into another person with freshly cleaned teeth, combed hair, a new face, a different and dressier(漂亮的) pair of shoes, and some sparkling jewelry. If she must wear a long dress for the party, she should bring it to the office in a protective bag and store it safely until she has to put it on.
