    HEN PARTY HOUSES

When deciding what to do for your or your friend's hen party, there are so many options (选择)out there that it can be hard to choose. Do you opt for an expensive weekend abroad or something a little closer to home and more affordable? One option that is becoming ever more popular is to rent luxury (奢侈) group accommodation in the UK.

Hen parties don't have to end with a group of girls wandering around the UK or foreign city. They can be spent in luxury and comfort at one of our hen party houses, where you can say farewell to your free single days with the company of those closest to you.

Our hen party houses are available in city centre locations, as well as rural spots where

outdoor lovers can spend the days absorbing the countryside before relaxing in luxury with food, drinks and games in the evenings. We offer hen party houses with hot bathtubs as well as with swimming pools.

Book your hen weekend with confidence. You can cancel your reservation between 60 to 2 days before your arrival and get a full refund, whatever the reason.

For much of history, reading was a fairly noisy activity. In ancient Iraq and Syria some

4,000 years ago, the commonly used words for “to read” literally meant “to cry out” or “to listen". But today, silent reading is the norm. The majority of us bottle the words in our heads as if sitting in a quiet library. Reading out loud is largely kept for bedtime stories and performances.

However, a growing body of research suggests that we may be missing out by reading only with the voices inside our minds. The ancient art of reading aloud has a number of benefits for adults, from helping improve our memories and understand complex texts, to strengthening emotional bonds between people. Colin MacLeod, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has researched the impact of reading aloud on memory. He and his colleagues have shown that people consistently remember words and texts better if they read them aloud than if they read them silently. The effect of reading aloud is particularly strong in children, but it works for older people, too.MacLeod has named this phenomenon the “production effect”. It means that producing written words-that's to say, reading them out loud-improves our memory of them.

The production effect has been replicated in numerous studies for more than a decade. In

one study in Australia, a group of seven- to- ten- year- olds were presented with a list of words and asked to read some silently, and others aloud. Afterwards, they correctly recognised 87% of the words they'd read aloud, but only 70% of the silent ones.

In another study, adults aged 67 to 88 were given the same task-reading words either silently or aloud-before then writing down all those they could remember. They were able to recall 27% of the words they had read aloud, but only 10% of those they'd read silently. When asked which ones they recognised, they were able to correctly identify 80% of the words they had read aloud, but only 60% of the silent ones. MacLeod and his team have found the effect can last up to a week after the reading task.

    24. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?

    A. Reading aloud started in ancient Iraq and Syria.

    B. People remember words better in a quiet library.

C.Reading aloud is beneficial to people of all ages.

    D. Silent reading results in missing out some words.

    25. What does the underlined word “replicated" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Challenged.

    B.Repeated.

    C.Ignored.

    D.Improved.

26.What are the two studies in the last two paragraphs intended to prove?

    A. There is no production effect at all.

    B. Reading aloud improves memory.

    C. Silent reading has an instant effect.

    D.Children remember more words.

27.What can be a suitable title for the passage?.

    A. Reading aloud-an art from the past.

    B. Reading silently-a new trend

    C.Reading aloud-a blessing for memory.

    D.Reading silently-a complex skill

    C

You may not have noticed it as you shop online, but the experience is changing. Clicking through a navigation(航行) bar of a website to find an item has become outdated. A search bar that allows you to look up a specific product is faster. In some cases, chatting with a bot (robot)

    may be even more efficient.

We have experimented with chatbots for years. Facebook has offered tools for businessmen to make bots that deal with customers. Retailers (零售商)like Amazon have used chatbots to answer customers' questions, and when the bots can't help, a person can take over. “Now that visiting a physical retail store has largely become impractical in the pandemic, we can expect such conversational technologies to gain popularity.” said Julie Ask, a technology analyst for Forrester Research.“There are already plenty of examples. Recently, I shopped for a pair of shoes at Beckett Simonon, an online fashion brand, and asked an employee via a chat box about the correct shoe size for my feet.” she added.

More companies are also using augmented reality to help people with online shopping, Ms. Ask said. Jins Eyewear, which sells glasses, lets you take a photo of your face to virtually try on glasses before deciding whether to buy them. Snap, the parent company for Snapchat, has teamed up with luxury brands like Gucci and Dior to offer virtual try-ons.

Augmented reality is ready to become especially popular this year because the technology keeps improving. New high-end Apple and Android smartphones include sensors(传感器)for detecting depth, which makes it easier for augmented reality apps to place objects like virtual furniture in physical spaces.

It is expected to see a wave of new ads that take advantage of the format. This year, advertisers are expected to spend about S2.4 billion on augmented reality advertising, up 71 percent from $1.4 billion last year, according to the research firm eMarketer.

    28. Which of the following best describes chatbots?

    A.Brand new.

    B.Convenient.

    C.Impractical.

    D.Primitive.

    29. Why does Julie Ask mention her recent experience of buying shoes?

    A. To prove a trend in online shopping.

    B. To promote an online fashion brand.

    C. To show the unrealistic way of shopping.

    D. To introduce a chat box that she used.

    30. What is augmented reality?

    A. A website widely used in advertisements.

    B. An app newly developed to sell glasses.

C.A software deciding the future of online shopping.

    D. A technology bettering online shopping experience.

    31. What is the passage mainly about?

    A. New technology is changing our shopping habits.

    B.Conversational technologies are well received.

    C. A navigation bar has become a thing of past.

    D. Augmented reality will be used in advertising.

    D

Over a year into the Covid-19 pandemic, more people are increasingly familiar with “Zoom fatigue,” the tiredness caused by overuse of videoconferencing tools such as Zoom. Zoom fatigue, however, can hit people differently depending on their personality.

The videoconferences seem smart and fun, but to many extroverts(性格外向者),the experience has proved to be less satisfying. Zoom does not provide the same heartfelt feedback as a live conversation, so it is not rewarding as expected. In a videoconference, the body language and other visual actions that are so often part of in-person conversation aren't fully there. And that can weigh especially on extroverts.

Extroverts can also become impatient at some of the structure and controls that videoconferencing platforms place on conversations. Functions such as muting(禁言),for example, control the conversation in a way that does not happen with in-person conversations.

For introverts, video calls cause their own special challenges. For one thing, in most virtual meetings, with multiple participants observing one another, introverts feel like being constantly watched. That is quite tiring. They prefer to control who is in their personal space and for how long, or rather, to connect with people one-on-one or in small groups.

What's more, in-person conversation offers pauses that can give a speaker, especially an

introvert, time to consider a new thought. Pauses while on-screen, however, can be confusing. Has a person finished speaking? Or has the Internet connection caused the screen to freeze? Pauses or silence between thoughts or topics feels more unbearable and difficult to interpret due to the video.

Each individual has to find the right balance to create more satisfying Zoom experiences. It is suggested that extroverts improve their videoconferencing experiences by making their calls with larger screens, louder audio and shared activities. For introverts, a good first step is to avoid optional video calls. Setting boundaries beforehand can also help. This could take the form of telling others at the beginning of a call when you need to leave.

    32. Who may experience “Zoom fatigue”

    A. Extroverts.

    B.Introverts.

    C. Neither extroverts nor introverts.

    D.Both extroverts and introverts.

    33. Why are extroverts unsatisfied with videoconferencing?

A.They get less reward than introverts.

    B. They fail to control their body language.

C.They are not free to express their opinions.

    D. They are asked to express their true feelings.

    34.What do introverts prefer?

    A.Videoconferencing platforms.

    B.Pauses in video conversation.

    C. Silent observation from others.

    D.One-on-one communication.

35.Which of the following might be the solution to “Zoom fatigue”

    A.Balance extroverts and introverts.

B.Ask for a leave whenever necessary.

    C.Use videoconferencing tools properly.

    D. Invite more people to videoconferences.

    项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。

You have to write a movie review for school and now what? Where to start? How to make it look more “academic”36

Watch the movie twice and take notes of both major and minor events and characters.37 There is always something we overlook or forget.

Carry out a complete research. _38 Research is equally important. Look for details, such as the name of filmmaker and his/her motivation to make that film, locations, plot, historic events that served as an inspiration for the movie. Basically, your research should serve to collect information that provides more depth to the review.

39 Don't start working on the review if you aren't sure that you understand the film. Evaluate the movie from beginning to an end. Re-watch it if you find some parts confusing. Only when you understand events that happened on the screen will you find it easier to create the review.

Draft an outline that you will follow to write the review in a brief fashion. Include examples for claims you make about the movie. 40 If a character is poorly developed, name examples too. Also, provide examples when commenting dialogues, locations, plot  and everything.

    A.Watching the movie isn't enough.

B.Analyze the movie after you watching it.

C.Here are some useful tips to kick-start the movie review writing process.

    D. A movie review is a detailed analysis of a film or a documentary.

    E. Here we offer a step-by-step process of how to write a good film review.

    F. It's a mistake to rely on the power of your memory only.

    G. If the plot has holes, then mention an example of a scene when that was evident.

My parents were deaf, so I grew up living in two worlds, our private world and the “hearing" world outside. Unlike my mother, my father was deaf because of the fever when he was at school age. Even so, Daddy Ben was undefeated. He transformed pain into humor. “It is better to laugh at life,” he'd say. “It makes easier a hard time.” I began to understand what he meant one evening when my mother signaled to me to phone a message to my father at the shop where he worked. I went to a pay phone nearby and dialed the number.

“I have a message for a man called Ben. He is my father," I told the man who answered.

“I don't know any Ben here.” The man was impatient.

    “He's deaf”I explained.

“Oh, you mean the Dummy(哑;蠢)。Why didn't you say that before?”

I don't remember the rest of that conversation. All I remember is the word dummy. I had heard my parents described as deaf-and-dumb all through my childhood. I always took pains to explain that although they were deaf, they were not dumb.

“Why do you let your boss call you Dummy?" I asked my father the next day.

He shrugged (耸肩)。 “It is easier for them. They remember me.”

I was angry. “You are not a dummy. You arc a smart man. Tell them your name is Benjamin.”

He smiled. “It is all right. I know I am not dummy. I listen with my eyes and that is enough.” Locked in stillness, he was pleased with himself. But I was not.

Dummy. I wrote the hateful word many times in my notebook, tore out the page and crumpled (弄皱) it into a ball. My father saw my anger. “Don't worry,” he said in a harsh (不悦

耳的) voice. “I will improve my speaking every day. I will learn new words, and you, Ruth, are

my teacher. You are my dictionary. And don't waste your sweet voice. Ask your teachers if you have questions."I hugged him.

    Paragraph 1:

From that moment on, I was determined that no one would call my father by that name again..

    Paragraph 2:

My job of teaching my father also paid me back generously.

    Dear fellow students.

Traffic accidents cause many deaths and injuries every year. In order to protect ourselves.

we should raise our sense of responsibility and road safety awareness.

One major reason for traffic accidents is ignoring traffic rules. Therefore, it is suggested

that we students obey traffic lights and always cross the road on a crossing. Besides,we should

avoid playing on the road or riding a bike carrying a passenger.

In a word, it is up to all road users to make sure that we pay attention to road safety. Le's

    do our part.

    Students' Union

    第二节 读后续写(满分20分)

    Possible version:

From that moment on, I was determined that no one would call my father by that name again. I listened to every class attentively for fear that I would miss any important detail. Every night, I would read the dictionary, absorbing language, and then I taught all the knowledge to my father. Both of us were thirsty for language because we shared the same purpose. With our minds combined in study, we unlocked our intelligence. My father earned respect for his rich knowledge. No one called him the Dummy again.

My job of teaching my father also paid me back generously. Through my had work,1 overcame all the study obstacles, making huge academic progress in my senior high school. Finally, I was accepted by my ideal university of language. It was only then that I realized I did not teach my father. Instead, he taught me. It was he who told me to listen with my eyes and ask with my mouth. In his unique way, my father taught me the true power of speech.
