In the 1970s, chemist James Lovelock and microbiologist Lynn Margulis developed the Gaia hypothesis(盖亚假说): all organic and inorganic components on the planet are part of one self-regulating system, working to maintain life on earth. Scientists agree that we need take significant action to control emissions(排放). But where scientists and popular movements have thus far failed to convince the world to act, it seems that Mother Earth may have succeeded, with the never-before-seen COVID-19.

COVID-19 is estimated to have reduced carbon dioxide emission in China by a quarter. It caused factories to shut down, and slowed construction activities. Recent analysis shows a 70 percent drop in flights in February compared with January. And even getting into a car and going to a restaurant, shopping mall, or concert poses a risk of infection, which means that many people are choosing to stay at home and are consuming less, resulting in a significant reduction of their carbon footprints.

Of course, China and the rest of the world will hope to restart normal production and consumption as soon as the virus is under control. However, some positive measures have already been taken as a result of COVID-19. As the virus is thought to originate from wildlife, Chinese authorities are revising laws and regulations regarding the country's massive wildlife trade in order to prevent future epidemics(流行病)—a win for biodiversity.

The deaths of thousands of people worldwide should also serve as a lasting reminder of the fragility of life. We humans frequently ignore or repress uncomfortable thoughts of death and extinction. We would rather get on with our lives as usual, thinking everything will somehow work out in the end. Only in the face of suffering and death are we forced to view the bigger, longer-term perspective—and this is what is needed in order to react appropriately to climate change. COVID-19 has sent alarm bells ringing throughout the world.

24What does the author mention the Gaia hypothesis for?

ATo tell the main idea of the text.

BTo introduce the topic for discussion.

CTo show the need to protect the planet.

DTo stress the importance of self-regulating system.

25What is the second paragraph mainly about?

    AThe unexpected benefit of COVID-19.

    BThe economic influence of COVID-19.

    CThe preventive measures for COVID-19.

    DThe possible causes of COVID-19.

26What does the underlined word "repress" in the last paragraph refer to?

    AControl. BHold.

    CVary. DTest.

27What does the writer want to tell us in the text?

AIt's urgent to fight the virus.

BThe virus has caused many deaths.

CLife is fragile in face of disasters.

DAction is needed for climate change.

    C

Macinley Butson was just 16 years old when she first had the idea to try and protect women from more — than — necessary radiation during breast cancer treatments—and now, her invention could be a game-changer in the medical field.

Butson, whose father works in medical physics, has always been interested in science. But she only began researching the harmful side effects of radiation treatment after her father discussed his experience with ineffective cancer treatments in his work. Since Butson had also recently lost a relative to breast cancer, she felt inspired to conduct her own research on the subject. She tried to begin her medical research by consulting scientific journals, but she found their academic terms almost impossible to understand.

She then turned to the Internet to find videos that taught how to read scientific journals. As she went deeper in her research, she stumbled upon a key bit of information: copper (铜)has been shown to be effective at protecting skin from radiation. An idea hit this Australian teen as she was viewing a film on medieval wars in her 10th grade history class. When she saw the scaled (鳞片) patterns of the mail (盔甲),she was inspired to create a wearable protective tool out of copper. She then headed back online and watched videos on how to put together tiny scales. She made her own flexible scale-mail which she now calls SMART: Scale Mail for Radiation Therapy.

When her invention was tested in a laboratory setting, it reduced surface exposure to unnecessary radiation by 75%. And now Butson is working on getting her SMART into clinical settings for use.

28Why did Macinley Butson start her research?

ATo assist her father with his work. BTo save her relative from cancer.

CTo publish some articles in journals. DTo find effective ways to treat cancer.

29What does the underlined phrase “stumbled upon" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    ACame across. BMissed.

    CPassed on. DRequired.

30Where did Macinley Buston get inspiration for her invention?

    AVideos online. BScientific journals.

    CHistory textbooks. DSoldiers defensive clothes.

31Which of the following best describes Macinley Buston?

    AStubborn. BCreative.

    CSelfless. DConsiderate.

    D

If you live in southwest Virginia, don’t be surprised at the sight of a drone(无人机) winging its way, doing airborne delivery over your neighborhood.

On October 20,2019,wing,an American multinational company, began the most advanced trials of commercial drone delivery in Virginia. Residents can now use a smartphone app to order items from Wing partners such as Sugar Magnolia. A Wing drone never sets down at destinations, instead gently lowering the package with a rope outside the customer's door.

Though Wing is the first American company to receive Federal Aviation Administration(FAA)approval to use commercial drones as a widespread service. it is not the only one. On October 22,2019,multinational delivery company UPS, which had also received FAA approval for its drone fleet, announced it would soon begin trial deliveries of goods from health care company CVS. Meanwhile, ridesharing company, Uber, which had partnered with McDonald's, hoped to use its drones to deliver food to hungry customers in San Diego, CA, before the end of 2019. Amazon also plans on testing its trial deliveries of goods in a yet-to-be-determined location in the upcoming months.

Every company's drones can carry packages weighing up to five pounds, and the series of trial are hortative, but widespread drone delivery still has many challenges. These include basic issues like finding places for drones to land, reducing noise pollution, and even ensuring the drones don't run into each other while airborne.

To help sped up the process, NASA announced the Urban Air Mobility Grand Challenge. The competition challenges airspace service providers to find creative solutions to the issues, so that drone deliveries can become a reality soon. “We are moving fast,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “We want to see by 2028 at least one city--maybe more than one--have the ability to control hundreds of drone delivery systems. They could be carrying goods, doing thousands of missions every day.”

32What can be inferred from the passage

AIt's impossible to crash other drones during the delivery.

BPeople can order items from Wing directly with an app.

CMore companies are expected to try out their drone delivery.

DDrones deliver items by gently bringing them down to the ground.

33What does the underlined part “hortative” in Paragraph 4 mean

    AEncouraging. BRelaxing.

    CCreative. DRelative.

34What's Jim Bridenstine's expectation of drone delivery?

ATo increase the speed of airborne delivery.

BTo see drone delivery systems widely used.

CTo be able to control the airline system.

DTo provide more solutions to goods delivery.

35Which is the best title for the text?

    AThe Future of Drone Delivery

BHow to Achieve Drone Delivery in 2028

CThe Advantages of Using Drone Delivery

DDrone Delivery May Become a Reality in the US

Emotional intelligence helps us to better understand ourselves and others. It can help us make better decisions, ones that are in harmony with our true beliefs and values. In EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence, the author expresses his opinion on that.36Take a look, and see whether they describe your everyday habits.

    You forgive and forget.

39And if they refuse, you move on anyway-and prevent others from holding your emotions hostage.

    You learn from mistakes.

CYou are always willing to learn from others.

DHere are some of the characteristics that accompany a high EQ.

G.That's why you pause before speaking or acting, especially when you recognize you're not calm.

      第三部分  语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)

    第一节 (共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

    阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

The structure in organizations has changed. It has transformed from a boss to a leader being at the top and from method directing to cooperation,    41    how many of us have actually made this    42    within ourselves?

Let’s not get personal about any person or connect this to any    43    organization. Consider the    44    pattern on a social media website such as LinkedIn. We often see good articles written by junior-level employee’s which   45    new enthusiasm and new perspectives, but how many senior-level    46    go and “Like” the article? Not   47    read it, but actually “Like” it. More often than not, the answer is none. Leaders read such articles, but they   48    to press the “Like” button due to some fear!

A friend of mine, who holds the    49    of Director of Human Resources in a reputed organization, happen to mention an article that his team member had written. I casually enquired    50    the absence of a “Like” or comment from him. His answer really    51    me! He said, “You know what my    52    is? I cannot be commenting or liking his article in public!” Amazed by this behavior, I did my research on this pattern on a few social media platforms. Yes, people want to “Like” or comment on articles and photos that are published by people with a(n)    53    level and do so as well.

While we are    54    the “Like” button on a junior-level employee’s one-year anniversary, we jump to be one in a few hundreds to offer    55    on a senior-level leader’s one-year completion. However, I think our precious “Like” for the employee    56    a lot and encourages him, while, on the other hand, it is    57    many hundreds and is not    58    noticed by the leader.

Encourage new talents and    59    them. If we do not exhibit this socially, I am sure we will not    60    it in our job either.

It is harming our environment and we need to do what we can stop it. Not only that, but as if we continue to use a same large amount of energy we will soon run out of it. Dear Jim,

How are you doing these days? Having got low scores in writing in recent English exams, I'm writing to desperately ask for your help.

To begin with, in my writing there are always some unbearable spelling and grammar mistakes. What's worse, I have no idea about what to write and how to use expressions. On top of that, little progress has been made in this part in spite of the time and efforts I devoted to practicing writing. Facing these difficulties, I've been confused and worried. So could you be so kind as to introduce some good ways? I'm sure to have it improved with your timely help.

    Best wishes.

    Yours.
