Thomas Edison, inventor of such items as the phonograph (留声机) and the world's first practical light bulb, is known around the world. But another lesser-known figure is owed his share of credit — Edison's competitor, Nikola Tesla. It took the work of both men to make possible a world that runs on electric power; however, their names were not always shared.

Edison, a self-made American inventor, built his name as a successful businessman.Tesla, a well-educated Serbian immigrant, was a tireless thinker. In 1882, Tesla got a job in the Paris branch of Continental Edison Company. Soon, his obvious skill won him a position at the Edison Machine Works in the United States, where the goal was to bring electricity to all of New York City. But Edison and Tesla had different ideas about how to make that goal a reality.

Edison worked mainly with direct current (DC) power. Although DC would prove useful in the decades to come, it was only effective at the time for powering things that were about a mile or less from the power source. However, alternating current (AC) power-supported by Tesla allowed electricity to be carried over long distances through power lines.

Soon the battle between the two was on. Edison proposed that several small DC-based power plants could be constructed to power different parts of a city, but this was impractical. Desperate to succeed, Edison attempted to show that DC power “was safe”— he even electrocuted (电死) an elephant to show the “dangers” of AC. In the end, however, it was practical, inexpensive AC that won the battle. By 1896, even Edison's own company had adopted AC.

Tesla succeeded, but Edison, whose self-branded companies won him over a thousand patents, is the more well-known of the two. Regardless, each inventor had a big hand in shaping the way we live.

    24. What does the underlined word “credit” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A. Cast. B. Trust. C. Recognition. D. Debt.

    25. What do we know about Nikola Tesla?

    A. He finished college in Paris.                 B. He worked as Edison's employee at first.

    C. He invented many things with Edison.         D. He was admired by Edison for his invention.

    26. What's a big difference between AC and DC power?

    A. DC power moves more quickly.              B. AC power ranges over larger areas.

    C. AC power is much safer and cheaper.          D. DC power can be widely used in more fields.

    27. What's the best title for the text?

    A. Edison vs Tesla: the war of the currents

    B. Edison: the inventor of the first light bulb

    C. DC vs AC: the theory behind the two concepts

    D. Nikola Tesla: a name that should be remembered

    C

Remember when your mom told you not to eat too many candy bars or sweets because they can cause tooth decay (蛀牙)? However, it turns out that chocolate can be more salutary to your teeth than you might expect. Recent studies show that chocolate can effectively fight against tooth decay, as if we need another excuse to eat chocolate.

Chocolate offers protection like fluoride, a main ingredient in most household toothpastes. Not only does chocolate protect our teeth, but it can do so very effectively. Studies show that chocolate has compounds that provide strong protection for teeth. One of the compounds in chocolate, CBH, is shown to protect even more effectively than fluoride.

Tooth decay happens when bacteria work to turn sugar into acids in our mouth. This is why eating foods with high sugar content can lead to more tooth decay. The compounds in chocolate, however, are anti-bacteria and can fight against bacteria in your mouth. The CBH compound in particular also works to strengthen tooth enamel (牙釉质), and protects against tooth decay.

Does this mean you can cat as much chocolate as you want without worrying about your teeth? It depends on the types of chocolate that you like. The protective effect of chocolate is most effective when you chew on cocoa beans. Of course, this option is not very appealing to; most people. A more tasty option is to choose dark chocolate with little sugar content, ideally no more than 6 to 8 grams per serving. For other types of chocolate with higher sugar content, the effect will be lessened. However, because of the protective compounds, it is still better for your teeth than other sweets and desserts containing the same amount of sugar.

    28. The word “salutary” in paragraph 1 means?

    A. Beneficial. B. Harmful. C. Familiar. D. Useless.

    29. What can we know about the compound CBH in chocolate?

    A. It can help chocolate cure tooth decay.

    B. It can effectively stop teeth from decaying.

    C. It may protect teeth better than toothpastes do.

    D. It may soon replace most household toothpastes.

    30. How does chocolate fight tooth decay?

    A. By breaking down acids. B. By building up compounds.

    C. By fixing up tooth enamel. D. By fighting against bacteria.

    31. What's the main idea of the text?

    A. Chocolate plays the role of toothpaste.

    B. Chocolate protects against tooth decay.

    C. Chocolate is the best choice for teeth protection.

    D. Chocolate is healthier to teeth than other sweets.

    D

A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.

The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna (天线)the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration (持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation.

While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a "future development".

Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement (执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

    32. Why is the roadside system used according to Paragraph 1?

    A. To send out cellphone signals to drivers.

    B. To detect drivers' illegal use of cellphone.

    C. To monitor people's use of phones while driving.

    D. To warn people against using phones while driving.

    33. How does the detector of the roadside system work?

    A. It measures the length of the phone. B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand.

    C. It picks up radio waves from handsets. D. It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.

    34. What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign?

    A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving. B. Have a close watch of road signs.

    C. Avoid being picked up by detectors. D. Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.

    35. What will the county council probably do in the future?

    A. Share the devices with the police. B. Make the system more advanced.

C Replace the police with the new system. D. Take steps to settle road safety problems.

How to make your solo road trips wonderful

Though road trips are often considered group adventures across unknown lands, more and more people have decided to go on the journey alone. Driving for hours by yourself is tiring, but it can be rewarding once you reach your destination.     36     Here are several tips to make your solo road trip even more amazing.

Do some research on the routes. Have a day-to-day itinerary (旅程计划) that is fairly flexible.     37     Not only will it become a souvenir once you finish the trip, but it will also be something to depend on if your Google Map fails.

It's good if you have some friends who live along the route you have planned    38      This will make the journey much more fulling and memorable while preventing loneliness.

39     Use good judgement. Don't talk to people who seem suspicious. Don't stop in places that are largely forbidden. Never give too much information about where you're headed. Don't walk around unfamiliar places at night.

Though you might not be much of a writer, you can still practice your writing skills and broadcast your adventures through social media. If sharing online is not your thing, simply keep a journal. Write about what has inspired you, what you ate or what you saw.     40

    A. You won't regret writing everything down.

    B. You will be grateful for having made this journey.

    C. Going on a solo road trip is all about being cautious,

    D. Not everyone has the same concerns about their road trips.

    E. Give them a call and see if you can stop by for a day or two.

    F. When it's time to decide, search the Internet for more information.

    G. Also, why not consider planning everything out on a traditional paper map?
