Jen Bricker-Bauer, a 32-year-old living in Los Angeles, likes to remind social media followers of her favorite verse, which reads, “Everything is possible for the one who believes, ” and it seems to sum up Bricker-Bauer’s life story.
Born to Romanian immigrants to the United States, Jen was left at the hospital by her biological family when she was born without legs. But she was adopted by parents who raised her with the belief that she could do anything.
At a 2019 talk in Malaysia, Jen said that the first team of doctors her adoptive parents consulted said that she would never be able to sit up unassisted. But her parents insisted. They went to a second team of doctors at a different hospital, who told them instead that “she’s going to do things beyond your wildest imagining.” From then on, Jen wrote on her website, her family gave her “One simple rule: Never say can’t.” She grew up hearing, “You were born this way for a reason. It wasn’t an accident. It was on purpose.”
Jen went on to play sports, including softball, basketball, and volleyball, but tumbling (翻腾)quickly became her favorite. She would eventually become a power tumbling high school state champion.
Jen made a career performing as an aerialist (空中飞人),touring with Britney Spears during her 2009 Circus World Tour. And in 2016, she wrote the New York Times best-seller, “Everything is Possible : Finding the Faith and Courage to Pursue Your Dreams.”
And while some may look at people with disabilities with pity, Jen likes to remind everyone that we’re all more alike than different. The one thing that everyone of us in this room have in common are obstacles, and struggles .” she said.
24. How did the second team of doctors react to Jen’s condition?
A. They were rather optimistic. B. They didn't take it seriously.
C. They were much shocked by it. D. They were confident of its cure.
25. What is stressed in Jen’s parents’ rule for her?
A. Honesty B. Patience C. Team spirit D. Self-confidence
26. What sport made Jen Bricker-Bauer well-known?
A. Basketball. B. Volleyball. C. Tumbling. D. Horse-riding.
27. Which of the following does Jen Bricker-Bauer probably agree with?
A. All men are created equal. B. Details are the key to success.
C. A good beginning is half done. D. Difficulties are but part of everyone’s life.
C
Winter arrived and suddenly we had lots of snow on the ground and temperatures that stayed below freezing during the day. The bird feeders were full of mixed seed. We had the snow, the cold temperatures and the feeders all ready and what we didn’t have were the birds.
Instead of dozens and dozens of chickadees flying in and out of the feeders, we now saw only three. There were five or six woodpeckers, four bluejays and eleven robins. Despite a heavy snowfall over two days, there were no other birds around.
The Audubon Society and several other local bird information sources insisted that nothing was wrong and that because of the warmer than usual fall weather and the unusually abundant sources of natural food, the birds were still finding plenty to eat in the wild. Another explanation they gave was that bird populations naturally fluctuate from year to year and that a feeder that is really “busy” one year may have few birds the next.
This is all true, but we have been feeding birds here for many years and it was obvious that there was something very different happening. We had had the normal number of birds the previous winter and into spring and early summer. I think it was in July when we first noticed that there weren’t as many birds around as usual. We keep one feeder filled all summer, and we usually have baby birds perched on or around it with the parent birds feeding their babies from the feeder. I love watching them and their scream is hard to overlook, so I know for sure that there were no baby birds being fed at this feeder.
I wonder was it just too cold and wet for the summer’s baby birds to survive? Did the organized spraying campaigns kill the birds? Or did the birds just go somewhere else looking for better weather?
28. What puzzled the author this winter?
A. Weather turned extremely cold. B. Fewer birds came to his birdfeeder.
C. There were more snowfalls than usual. D. Winter arrived much earlier than usual.
29. What does the underlined word “fluctuate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Change. B. Grow. C. Decrease. D. Disappear.
30. What does the author think of the Audubon Society’s explanations?
A. Too abstract. B. Unfounded. C. Doubtful. D. Very ridiculous.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text ?
A. What Happened to All the Birds ?
B. More Birds Face the Risk of Starving.
C. Can the Birds Survive the Coming Winter ?
D. More Bird Species Put on the List of Dying Out.
D
Research shows that handwriting practice isn’t just a useless task your teachers created to annoy you — it could actually make kids smarter.
According to Health Key, researchers found that kids who practice writing letters develop better recognition skills than those who just practice seeing and saying them. Hand- writing practice also produces different brain activation patterns than verbal repetition , more similar to patterns seen in adults. Other studies have found that kids who write an essay by hand write more — and more quickly — than those who use a computer, and that they’re more likely to write in complete sentences.
Katya Feder,a professor at the University of Ottawa School of Rehabilitation , tells Health Key that writing by hand “integrates motor pathways into the brain” — and indeed , handwriting engages the body in a way that typing doesn’t. Each stroke(敲击)of a key feels pretty much the same as any other, but each letter formed by hand is unique, and it’s no surprise that kids grow more accustomed to the alphabet when they’re asked to write it out. Nor is it shocking that kids write more quickly and abundantly when they do so with a pen— I first started writing longhand(普通书写)as a way to fight writer’s block, and I’ve held onto the technique ever since. A lot of its appeal has to do with its physicality — it is easier to get a flow going on the page than on the screen, and the feeling that I’m doing something helps me keep going.
Of course, the other benefit of a pen is that it’s not connected to the Internet, and I wonder if the kids who were composing essays on the computer were simply distracted from their work by the machine’s many other offerings. Many of the benefits of handwriting are no doubt real, but some of them are illusory(虚幻的)—research shows the same paper gets a better grade when it’s written neatly than when it’s scrawled(no word on how a typed version would measure up). So kids, practice your handwriting— if it doesn’t actually make you smarter, at least it will make people think you are.
32. According to the text, what’s one advantage of handwriting?
A. It improves kids’ imagination. B. It encourages logical thinking.
C. It produces more fluent writing. D. It helps develop a better memory.
33. What can we infer from the third paragraph ?
A. The author was not used to writing longhand.
B. Writing by hand makes kids feel more relaxed.
C. Kids are naturally fond of writing in unique ways.
D. Typing involves more brain activities than handwriting.
34. Why does the author disapprove of kids writing on a computer ?
A. Their health will be harmed. B. They can’t concentrate on their work.
C. They can hardly write complete sentences. D. They easily get addicted to illusory pictures.
35. In which part of a website can you probably read the text ?
A. Society. B. Technology. C. Business. D. Education.

Communication is the most important skill in life. We spend most of our waking hours communicating. But consider this : You’ve spent years learning how to read and write , years learning how to speak. 36 What training or education have you had that enables you to listen so that you really ,deeply understand another human ?
Comparatively few people have had any training in listening at all. If you want to inter- act effectively with me, to influence me— your spouse , your child ,your neighbor , your boss, your coworker, your friend you first need to understand me. 37 If I sense you’re using some techni-
ques, I wonder why you’re doing it, what your motives are. And I don't feel safe enough to open myself up to you.
The real key to your influence with me is your example , your actual conduct. Your example flows naturally out of your character, or the kind of person you truly are. 38 It is evident in how I actually experience you.
If your private performance doesn't square with your public performance, it’s very hard for me to open up with you. Then, I don’t feel safe enough to expose my opinions and experiences and my tender feelings. 39
But unless I open up with you, unless you understand me and my unique situation and feelings, you won’t know how to advise me. 40
You may say you care about and appreciate me. I desperately want to believe that. But how can you appreciate me when you don’t even understand me ? All I have are your words, and I can’t trust words.
A. But what about listening ?
B. Who knows what will happen ?
C. And you can’t do that with techniques alone.
D. But what should we do to communicate effectively ?
E. What you say is good and fine, but it doesn’t relate to me.
F. Most people are not good at expressing themselves in public.
G. It is not what others say you are or what you may want me to think you are.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文.
My sister Megan always felt a little afraid while babysitting at the Quinns’ house. It was set back from the road by a long, winding driveway, and the yard was filled with so many pine trees that she couldn’t see any of the neighbors’ lights.
On this particular night, the snow was falling heavily outside. The girls begged her to read them their favorite story, and afterward they fell asleep. Megan settled on the sofa to watch an old movie on television.
Around ten o’clock , a loud knock on the door surprised her. Megan spied through the peephole(窥视孔) and saw a middle-aged man standing in the entryway.
“Who is it ?”she asked.
“Your brother Ben.”
Megan realized the man had mistaken her for his sister. She replied , “Mrs. Quinn can’t come to the door right now.” She thought of her mother’s warning: Never open the door for a stranger while you’re babysitting(临时照看小孩).
“The truth is I’m babysitting,” she said through the screen. The words were out of her mouth before she remembered her mother’s second warning: Don’t advertise that you’re alone. Megan quickly added , “Mrs. Quinn will be home soon. ”
“It’s awfully cold out here. Can I wait inside ?” The man asked.
Megan hesitated. “Couldn’t you come back in a little while?”
“I drove all the way from Newport. I don’t have anywhere else to go.” The man smiled “Please let me in. I promise I won’t bother you.”
“Mrs. Quinn left a number for me to contact her ,” Megan said . “I’ll call her and see what she says.”
The smile disappeared from the man’s face. “You’re going to leave me outside to freeze to death in the meantime ? Wait until she finds out you wouldn’t let me in ! You’ll be in so much trouble !” With the words he left.
Megan trembled. Maybe it was true. Maybe she would get in trouble. What if Mrs. Quinn asked her why he didn’t let her brother in ? How could Megan explain that he was absolutely rude ? Would Mrs. Quinn think she was not mature enough to babysit? Maybe she’d never call her again.

1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

第一节 One possible version :
Dear Jenson,
How are you getting along these days? I'm writing to ask a favor of you.
Since my first year at high school, I have been a member of our school’s English Corner group and is responsible for arranging its various activities. As you know, Spoken English has always been a headache for us English learners. So I was wondering if you could spare some time to give us some online training in Oral English .If possible, would 9 o' clock this Saturday be a convenient time for you ?
Looking forward to your early reply.
With all the best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节One possible version :
A little after eleven, Mrs. Quinn came back. After sitting down on the sofa , she asked Megan how everything was going when she was away. Megan felt so nervous that she was at a loss for words. Finally, she summoned up the courage to tell Mrs. Quinn what had happened. “ I didn't have any problems with the girls. But later your brother came to the door. When I told him I wasn't going to open the door, he got really angry with me and left. I'm terribly sorry.”
Mrs. Quinn frowned. “My brother? I don't have a brother .” Megan was proud of herself for following her heart and making a wise choice. She had kept Mrs. Quinn's kids—and herself—safe that night. Feeling surprised and relieved , Mrs. Quinn praised Megan for her keeping calm in the face of danger. “You are amazing . I should thank you for your great job !” Mrs. Quinn said happily.

W: Nice to meet you here, Jack. I’m buying some New Year gifts for those who work with me, but it’s really a headache.
M: Maybe I could give you some advice. Firstly, you’d better divide them into different groups. Who are the people that are your friends as well as your workmates? And who are the people that you do not know well but you see pretty much daily?
W: OK. Then what should I do?
M: For the friends, you want to get them personal gifts. Do they like chocolate?
W: This is what I always give. But I know Mary is on a diet.
M: Does she like fruit or coffee? Anyway, think of a gift that you know your friend likes.
W: Well, I think fruit is helpful to keep fit. How about the rest of them?
M: Leave cards in their mailboxes or on their desks.
W: New Year cards?
M: Yes. You can afford that. More importantly, it shows them that you are thinking of them.
W: Thank you for your suggestion, Jack. You really have saved me, and my money as well!
(Text 10)
Hello, everybody. Today I’d like to share with you something about John Audubon. John was born on April 26th, 1785. He spent much of his childhood in France where he spent many hours each day outdoors painting pictures. At the age of 18, he moved to the United States. Well, actually, John began his life in the US as a businessman. However, instead of taking care of his business, John was often off exploring nature. At first, John spent his time hunting for fun. Then he found that the animals around were very beautiful, and he particularly enjoyed observing the birds he saw. He began studying them, trying to learn the differences between the birds and noticing their different behaviors. Therefore, he painted the birds he observed a lot. In 1819, John realized that he didn't have enough money to pay his bills. He was very upset that he couldn’t earn enough money to support his family. So he spent time improving his painting skills and began to sell his paintings. He discovered that he could earn some money while doing something he really enjoyed. We are lucky now to have so many paintings of American birds by John Audubon.
