In the subway station, I notice a black teenage boy waiting for the train, sitting on a railing (栏杆) just in front of a moving escalator (扶梯). It’s a hot evening; there is no air in the station. This black kid is just sitting there, settled on the railing, and I’m just standing there about 10 feet away looking for the faraway lights of the oncoming train. Then suddenly a white police officer is asking the kid for identification. The kid turns a little annoyed and asks what he’s been bothering about. The officer doesn’t explain. The kid pulls out some I.D. and hands it to the officer who looks at it and then barks out a demand for something with an address on it, a driver’s license.
Unwillingly, the kid pulls out a second piece of identification. The officer looks at it and tells the kid to come with him. Nothing I have seen or heard explains the officer’s strict approach or why the kid is being led away.
I get up to the officer and politely ask what this guy did and where he is taking him. He looks at me like I’m armed and crazy and tells me that it’s none of my business and to stay out of this.
“Could I please take down your badge (警徽) number, sir, as I’d like to report all this,” I say.
“Take down my badge number and then you show me a piece of identification. What are you, some lawyer?”
I copy down his badge number and then show him my driver’s license, asking, “Could you please tell me what this is all for?”
Looking at me over and again asking if I’m a lawyer, he tells me he’s taking the kid in for blocking the escalator and me in for “obstructing a police action.” Another black man hearing all this asks what’s going on and the officer gets very nervous. So I decide to go with him to his office. Then the officer gives his version of what happened and I politely interrupt to explain that the kid was in no way blocking the escalator traffic and that I was in no way “obstructing a police action”, not adding that I thought the way the officer handling the situation was racist and unnecessarily strict.
After this experience in the police station, I’m still wondering whether a well-dressed white man will be faced with a sharp command for identification for sitting on an escalator railing waiting for a train. If a bystander does want to get involved and inquire about an apparently unfair arrest, is a policeman’s only response a second arrest? Will our police officers always be seen by black kids as evils? Is my charge with racism too strong?
34. What is the black teenager doing at the train station?
A. He is blocking the escalator. B. He is escaping the police.
C. He is waiting for the train. D. He is damaging the escalator.
35. Why does the author stand out to help the black teenager?
A. He is a racist. B. He is not afraid to get involved.
C. He is black. D. He has a sense of justice.
36. According to the passage, we can know that ______.
A. The black boy doesn’t obey the police officer.
B. Subway stations are good places to hang about.
C. The white policeman thinks ill of the black teenager.
D. Situations like this in the passage will never change.
37. Which of the following best explain the underlined word in the passage?
A. Blame. B. Forbid. C. Prevent. D. Defend.

On June 17, China launched three astronauts into orbit to begin occupation of the country’s new space station. The three men ― Nie Haisheng, Liu Boming, and Tang Hongbo ― are to spend three months aboard the Tianhe module some 380km above the Earth. It will be China’s longest crewed space mission to date and the first in nearly five years.
The primary purpose of the team on the Shenzhou-12 mission is to bring the 22.5-tonne Tianhe module into service. “We need to set up our new home in space and test a series of new technologies,” Mr. Nie said ahead of the launch. “So, the mission is tough and challenging. I believe with the three of us working closely together, doing thorough and accurate operations, we can overcome our challenges. We do have the confidence to complete the mission.”
The crew successfully docked (对接) with the space station over seven hours after the launch. The moment of contact was met with applause from mission control and the huge land in China. The launch and following mission are definitely a demonstration of China’s growing confidence and capability in the space field. President Xi Jinping has thrown his support behind the country’s space efforts, and the Chinese official media regularly cast the “space dream” as one significant step on the path to “national rejuvenation (民族复兴)”.
China has in recent years made no secret of its space ambitions. It has poured significant funding into its space efforts, and in 2019 became the first country to send an un-crewed rover (登月车) to the far side of the Moon. For its part, China says it is open to foreign participation on its station. For example, on the outside of the station, there is an Indian-developed telescopic spectrograph to study ultraviolet emissions coming from deep space. And in the long term, there probably also will be visits to the station by non-Chinese citizens.
At Wednesday’s press conference, Ji Qiming, an assistant director with China’s human spaceflight agency, said: “We welcome co-operation in this regard.” “It is believed that soon after the completion of the Chinese space station, we will see Chinese and foreign astronauts fly and work together,” he added.
38. What is the chief goal of the three-man crew?
A. Testing a variety of new technologies. B. Spending three months aboard the Tianhe module.
C. Putting the Tianhe module into operation. D. Displaying China’s rising confidence and capability.
39. What would the Chinese public think of the launch of Shenzhou-12?
A. Mind-blowing.
B. Heart-breaking.
C. Energy-consuming.
D. Labor-saving.
40. Why is “an Indian-developed telescopic spectrograph” mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To show China’s stand on international cooperation.
B. To make clear the presence of non-Chinese visitors.
C. To praise India’s advanced aerospace technologies.
D. To compare China and India at the technical level.
41. What is the main topic of this news report on the China space station?
A. The efforts put on space exploration.
B. The detailed plan of the three-month mission.
C. The welcome for foreign involvement.
D. The delivery of the first crew to Tianhe module.
D
Alex Zhang, a 26-year-old male engineering worker, has been working at one of China’s leading telecommunication companies for years. He believes that the current situation at his company has become stagnant, despite the fact that his co-workers are staying later and later in the office and volunteering more frequently to work on weekends.
“At first people would try to work like a horse, but gradually the rising number of working hours doesn’t mean a higher reward anymore but will only bring anxiety and stress,” Zhang added. “Also, as some people realize they have to stay overtime anyway, they become slack (懈怠的) during the day.”
“Involution,” or nèi juǎn in Chinese, is a rising buzzword (流行语) in China, referring to the status of not making any progress and development. It was first used to describe the unreasonable amount of work every student has to face to get competitive grades inside Chinese universities. Later it has spread fast and come to refer to the abnormal work culture of big companies where 996 ― working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days a week ― is common. More and more tired workers have begun to talk about similarly depressing working conditions they face, fueling heated discussions online.
Facing such an exhausting and unrewarding competition, Generation Y and Z are beginning to choose “lying flat” — a new phrase popularized within the last few weeks, meant to reflect the unresisting and unbothered attitude. Besides being used in the workplace, other areas that “lying flat” happens include marriage, consumption (消费), and social activities. Feeling more and more powerless, some young people have had a complete lack of interest in getting married, having kids, and making large purchases. When China’s “the three-child policy” is making waves on the internet, some netizens are responding with comments that point to the deep causes within education, housing, and the unfair treatment that female employees face, all of which are reasons behind people’s “lying down” attitude.
What is on earth the right attitude towards life? Among the heated discussion online, “I lie down. You involute. Neither of us is the other’s business.” was one of the most popular comments. But are there only two options? Instead of thinking about how to make a difficult choice, what you need to think about is how to adjust your mind and get rid of anxiety. Live your own life based on reality and shoulder the responsibility. That’s it.
42. What does the underlined word “stagnant” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Energetic.
B. Inactive.
C. Competitive.
D. Exhausted.
43. In which of the following contexts was the term “involution” first used?
A. Workplace.
B. Politics.
C. Education.
D. Marriage.
44. According to the text, why are some young people beginning to choose “lying flat”?
A. They follow the crowd blindly.
B. They develop a sense of incapability in the race.
C. They are indifferent to real life by nature.
D. They become less fit for lack of regular exercises.
45. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the origin of the term “involution”.
B. To criticize the young Chinese who are “lying flat”.
C. To stress the importance of the unresisting attitude.
D. To inspire a positive attitude in the involuted people.

Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries. __46__ In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.

Believe it and not, 3D-printing has already affected many things in our lives, rightly down to the food we eat. For instance, more than one restaurant in London served 3D-printed hamburgers to customers to date. But perhaps the most significant success which people have achieved is in medicine where human’s body parts are made, including a beating heart. What impressive stuffs! And it is not just humans who benefit from — in Brazil, people have given the new 3D-printed shell to a turtle injured in a forest fire. I’d say it is no doubt that more technological approaches to advance our daily lives are being established.
