Although it’ll take weeks to harvest all of their cabbage, farmers in a town in Pingdu, Shandong province, have started preparing to sell the vegetables to overseas markets.
Li Wenbin, who runs a vegetable trading business in the town of Renzhao, said his fresh vegetable sales to overseas markets mainly in Japan, South Korea and Malaysia doubled to 20,000 metric tons last year due to high demand for kimchi, a dietary staple in South Korea.
South Korea suffered from an abnormally long rainy season and three typhoons last year that damaged large amounts of Chinese cabbage, the major ingredient(原料) for kimchi, creating high demand for the vegetable.
“Based on the current performance of vegetable exports in parts of southern China, such as in Fujian province, we predict this year’s business won’t be sad,” said Li, adding that he is confident because vegetables from Renzhao are competitive in terms of quality and price.
Around 120 kilometers west of Pingdu, vegetable traders in Shouguang, Weifang, one of the country’s major vegetable production bases, have started exporting this year’s carrots. Pei Shengji, manager of Zhonglong Food, headquartered in Shouguang, said the harvesting of the company’s 65-hectare carrot growing base in Fujian is in full swing. All of the carrots will be processed and shipped to overseas markets.
What’s more, Shandong province is developing seeds to meet diverse needs for quality crops, which helps to support the agricultural sector. “The seed developed domestically brings rich harvests. The Chinese cabbage tastes good and is good for being preserved,” he said. Besides, it’s much cheaper than foreign seeds.
Unlike Li, who can choose quality Chinese cabbage seeds developed in China, Pei has to spend more buying foreign seeds because there are no domestically developed carrot seeds available. According to Weifang’s five-year plan, the seeds of medium-and high-end vegetables such as bell peppers, broccoli and carrots will be researched and developed.

The Tibet autonomous region has placed nearly half its land area under the strictest ecological supervision (监督).It was announced at an annual meeting of the regional People's Congress, which kicked off on Wednesday.
The ecological protection area, which covers more than 539,000 square kilometers, makes up 45 percent of the region's area, and 22 ecological reserves have been built and are operational.
According to the government work report, the rate of days with good air quality in Tibet's cities has reached 99.4 percent, and all the region's drinking water sources have met applicable standards.
The report also said that the number of Tibetan antelope (羚)in the region has risen to more than 200,000, wildlife species to 1,072 and black-necked cranes to more than 8,000. Five rare new species have been discovered in recent years. The region has spent 12.2 billion yuan ($1.9 billion) on ecological protection projects in recent years. Five cities and three counties have been named as national-level ecologically civilized model cities and counties, and more rural residents have benefited financially by undertaking part-time ecological protection work.
More advanced monitoring facilities have been in place in the reserve, with more ecological protection inspectors employed to undertake protection work. The professional ecological inspectors are provided with basic tools such as motorcycles, telescopes and paging receivers, and they provide feedback regularly. Professional inspectors also receive one week of training every year from professors at Tibet University.
Kunsang Darje, a railway maintenance worker in Nagchu, said that apart from maintaining the railway and highway, he also collects trash along the section with his colleagues. “The place I work is in a no-man's land, and I think it's very important to protect the animals there without affecting them with human activities, and we are also bound to take responsibility there," he said.

Our suits have four layers: thermal（保暖的）underwear on the inside, followed by an electrically heated bodysuit, a thick wool coat, and a half-inch-thick layer of rubber outerwear. There’re two layers of hoods, waterproof gloves and 35 pounds of weights. There are two batteries for the heated bodysuit, a backup gas container, and finally, my photography equipment. We look like astronauts minus the helmets.
When we finally dive into the freezing water, we’re wearing 200 pounds each. What could possibly make this worthwhile? The sight! Only a few species of seals, penguins, and other birds live in East Antarctica, and no land mammals at all. Below, it＇s a rich garden. Antarctic marine（海洋的）life has been largely isolated from the rest of the planet for millions of years, ever since the continent separated from the other continents and froze over. Since then the powerful Antarctic Circumpolar Current has surrounded Antarctica from west to east, creating a sharp change in temperature that prevents the spread of marine animals. The long isolation has allowed a surprising diversity of species, unique to the region, to evolve on the seafloor.
The waters under Antarctic ice are like Mount Qomolangma: magical, but extremely unfriendly. Nothing short of full commitment gets you anywhere. The demand is too great. But that’s what makes the images you see here so breathtaking, and the experience of having photographed them and of having seen this place so unforgettable.

If you consider applying for any colleges abroad, one of the most important parts is the recommendation letter. Its purpose is to give universities a complete picture of you.

Choose the right references
Universities want to know how well you work under pressure and how you react to criticism, basically your characteristics, abilities and mentality. A good referee (推荐人) should have a solid professional relationship with you and be able to communicate your academic and personal strengths. 37
