There was a thick forest on the sides of a mountain. Many kinds of animals lived in the forest. A deer was eating grass and leaves with her two young ones. The young ones wandered happily here and there. The deer followed her fauns into a cave. The deer was frightened because it was a tiger’s cave. There were bones of dead animals all over the cave. Fortunately, the tiger was not inside the cave at the time.
The deer was trying to lead her young ones out of the cave when she heard a loud roar. She saw the tiger at a distance coming towards the cave. It was dangerous to go out of the cave now. She thought of a plan. The deer raised her voice and shouted, “My dear young children do not weep. I shall capture a tiger for you to eat. You can have a good dinner.”
The tiger heard these words and became frightened. He thought, “Whose is that strange voice from the cave? A dangerous animal is staying inside to capture me. I shall runaway to escape death.” The tiger began to run away from there as fast as possible.
A jackal saw the running tiger. “Why are you running in great fear?” the jackal asked. The tiger said, “My friend, a powerful and fierce animal is in my cave. The young ones are crying for a tiger to eat. The mother is promising to capture a tiger for them. So, I am running away.”
The cunning jackal was now sure the tiger was a coward. It said, “Don’t be afraid. No animal is fiercer or stronger than a tiger. Let us go together to find out.”
But the tiger said, “I do not want to take a chance. You may run away. I will be left alone to die. So, I will not come with you.”
The jackal said, “Trust me. Let us knot our tails together. Then I will not be able to leave you.” The tiger agreed unwillingly to this proposal. So the jackal tied their tails in a knot. Now they walked towards the cave together.
Paragraph 1:

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The deer saw the jackal and the tiger coming together. She again raised her voice. She shouted towards her children standing inside the cave, “My dear children, I requested my friend, the clever jackal, to capture a tiger for us. Now look, the jackal has captured a tiger for us. He has tied the tiger’s tail to his tail. This is to prevent the tiger from escaping. You will soon have the tiger for dinner.”
Paragraph 2:
The tiger was shocked to hear this and he was sure now the jackal cheated him. So, the tiger decided to escape from the terrible. animal standing inside his cave. He started running. He forgot about the jackal. He dragged the jackal over rocks and thorns. In the mad escape the jackal was caught between two rocks. The tiger pulled with all his might. His tail got cut. The jackal was killed in this incident. The tail-less tiger ran away to another part of the forest. The deer and her young ones left the tiger’s cave. They joined their herd safely. Presence of mind and intelligence can save one from dangerous situations.

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm.“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…
Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.
Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.
They had no choice but to leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up a slope. He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.

“Where’ve you been?”Steve cried. Brady stopped directly in front of him and started pushing him back toward the slope they’d just climbed. When Steve still didn’t get it, Brady grabbed the boy’s jeans and pulled harder. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of course he remembered what his uncle had said about Brady saving his life, but that had been a long time ago. Was he still sharp enough to get them through this? Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve decided.
Paragraph 2:
Brady led them back down the slope and into the trees. Several times the big dog stopped to get his escape route. Often he changed direction. How long they’d walked Steve had no idea. He just held onto Brady’s leash with one hand and kept putting one foot in front of the other. He was almost numb when he heard the wonderful sound of rushing water. The river! With a yell the boys ran unsteadily forward until they jumped in cool, running water. “Brady, you did it!”

Once there lived a kind man named Alvin in a small village with his wife. They had a little son. One day, as Alvin was returning home from a nearby village, he came across a baby mongoose (猫鼬) crying next to his mother’s dead body.
“Oh, what a poor creature!” thought Alvin. “If I leave him here, he will surely die.” He picked him up and took him home.
“Gowri, I found this little creature on my way home. Let us take care of him,” Alvin said to his wife. “Very well along with our son, I will take care of the mongoose too,” replied Gowri.
The mongoose grew up with a lot of love and care in their house. He slept next to their son in the cradle (摇篮), drank milk and played with the boy every day. The little mongoose’s days were full of joy. As both the boy and mongoose grew up, their friendship changed to a relationship between two brothers.
The mongoose grew up fast and as days went by, Gowri began to get doubts in her mind. “After all, this is a wild animal. Sooner or later, he will show his true colors,” she thought to herself. She put the mongoose’s bed separately and would watch him carefully whenever he played with her son.
One day when Alvin was away, Gowri decided to go to the river to fetch a pot of water. She looked around and saw her son sleeping soundly in his cradle. The mongoose was also asleep on the floor at the foot of the cradle. “It should take only a few minutes. I hope I can trust that mongoose not to harm my little son,” she said to herself and hurried to the river.
Suddenly, the mongoose woke up with a start. He had heard a very low noise. Looking up, the mongoose saw a large black snake crawling (爬行) in through a hole in the wall.
“The snake will harm my brother. Mother and Father are away. I will have to protect my little brother,” thought the mongoose, as the snake came crawling towards the cradle.

Joyfully, he ran out to meet his mother and tried telling her through his little animal signs that he had protected his little brother from a dreadful snake.
But as soon as Gowri saw blood on the mongoose’s mouth and teeth, she thought, “This wild animal has killed my little son.” In a fit of anger Alvin’s wife threw the pot full of water on the mongoose, killing him instantly. Entering the house with a heavy heart, she was amazed to see her little son lying in his cradle still deep in sleep. On the floor was a huge black snake with its ugly head bitten off. “Oh what have I done,” cried Alvin's wife. “I killed that faithful little mongoose who saved the life of my precious son.”

It was dark and gloomy as the dark night swallowed the dense forest. The clear, starry skies in the backdrop (背景) made for a fitting view as the young koala bear made his way home along the river.
It was his first day out to search for food. He remembered every word that his mom said to him as he made his way back. But the words, “be back before dark,” were haunting (萦绕) him the most.
But the little bear lost track of time as the sun started to move towards the horizons.
The darkness had changed all that. His only guiding light was the shining north star in the sky, another advice from his mother which he refused to forget.
Suddenly, the north star disappeared. It seemed it was swallowed in the same blackness which had taken over the jungle.
But there was light, a raging light which seemed different to the little koala. It couldn’t be the sun, he thought.
It seemed it was getting nearer. The little bear stopped dead in his tracks. This didn’t seem right. Suddenly, a heat wave hit him in the face as he was surrounded by flames.
Battered and bruised (遍体鳞伤), the koala ran away from the flames. He could feel the fire chasing him, as the heat got stronger. He felt it creeping up his back almost reaching his fluffy ears. He was scared to death.
He longed to be home with his mom, away from this disorder. However, he was panicking, not knowing what to do. The heat was getting unbearable. He saw a hollow tree trunk in the distance. The little bear dived into it, hoping to find some relief from the flames.
But the unforgiving flames made him realize his mistake almost immediately. The poor soul looked on as the flames started to eat away at the trunk. The dryness made it all the more delicious for this fire monster to feast on the dead tree. The heat had made the little bear exhausted. He used the last bit of energy which he had left to run from the trunk, escaping from the flames.

【答案】One possible version
All of a sudden, his fur caught fire. Desperately looking around for help, the little bear screamed loudly as the pain got unbearable. He was too young to die. Maybe this was it, the little bear thought. My mom would be so sad. All of a sudden the little bear was pulled from the ground up in the air, and down again. But he didn’t fall. He felt a warm embrace instead of the burning pain which had engulfed his being a short while ago. Mom was here.
A moment later the little bear was in the river with his mom. Mom cleaned his wounds and put out the fire om him. Relieved, the little boy climbed onto Mom’s back as she swam across the shallow part of the river and rested once both were on the other side. The sight of the flames growing larger felt frightening as they looked on, but the thought of being safe on the other side gave the family peace of mind as they both started walking towards home. What a close escape!

5.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was sitting in my office in an animal clinic when a young family rushed in. The father held a dying dog packed in a bloody towel in his arms. He was followed by a young boy carrying a big cat and crying as if his little heart was completely broken. The mother followed, comforting the boy. The cat simply looked at everyone with no interest and remained calm, lying on the boy's shoulder.
The nurse sent the father and what he held into the examining rooms. As the mother, the boy and the cat settled down on the seats in the waiting room, I couldn't help asking what this was all about. I thought that the pet in the bloody towel must have been hit by a car. In fact, it was one of the most unusual and heartwarming stories I had ever heard.
The cat lying on the boy's shoulder, named Tom, was the first pet of the family and now was an old guy of 12 years old. They had rescued him as an abandoned kitten. He was atypical cat, self-centred and quite independent, but very gentle.
Then, a year before this incident, Scotty, a puppy, came to the family as a gift from the boy's grandparents. The family was at first fearful about how Tom would accept the newcomer, but a strange thing happened. The old cat looked at the dog as if he were a long lost little brother. He absolutely liked the little guy. He allowed the puppy to chew his tail. He played for hours with him as if the dog were his own personal pet.
The family loved the two pets very much, taking videos of the pair together, and impressed by the way the old cat and the young dog were connected. The family lived near the hill. Tom and Scotty were kept indoors at night because there were wolves searching for small pets for meals at night.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Nobody had ever thought there would be a problem in daylight, however. That Sunday afternoon, Scotty was playing in the yard when the air was filled with barking and then screams of pain suddenly. The family rushed to investigate, only to spot a wolf sinking its sharp teeth into Scotty's back. The tiny white ball of fur was fighting bravely but the wolf had the absolute advantage. The father took a nearby chair and rushed out of the door just in time to see Tom flying past his head.
Paragraph 2:
Tom, seeing Scotty caught by the wolf, jumped from the upper bedroom balcony and onto the wolf's head. He screamed and kept attacking the wolf's eyes, shocking him so much that he dropped Scotty. The father followed suit, hitting the wolf with the big chair. Frightened and desperate, the wolf jumped off immediately. Lying on the ground, Scotty was breathing at his last gasp. With no time wasted, the family covered him in a towel and zoomed here—If one can't be touched by this unusual and moving story, what else can? I approached them, praying with them together.

Many years ago, I worked at a very small county animal shelter. Under the state regulations, we were only allowed to keep a dog for a certain period of time before it was claimed by its owner. Unluckily, we had limited space, and when a new dog came in, we had to make room for it somehow. It wasn't always the most pleasant task.
One day, about an hour before closing time, a small, elderly, red dog was sent here. We had no space and didn't know what we should do. My heart broke. In fact, we were supposed to let go of one of the dogs who had been there too long, but the volunteers had been putting in extra hours, bathing the dogs, and taking their pictures to try to find them homes. We were full, but the other dogs all stood a good chance of finding a home if they just had some time.
That little old dog waddled over to me and sat at my feet. She looked up with cloudy eyes, and then curled up on the floor. I bent down, lifted her to the desk, and gave her a quick exam. Her teeth were in terrible condition, but it appeared the cause was a lifetime of canned food. Someone was surely looking for this princess.
We found her a box. To our surprise, the dog whined and wagged her tail. I set her down on the floor, and she waddled over and climbed into the box! I decided to take her home for the night, and she could spend the days in the office until her owner came. Then we wouldn't have to put down another dog to open a cage.
I finished up my paperwork while the old dog slept in the box. When it was time to leave, she followed me.
Paragraph 1:
In the morning, she accompanied me to work.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
One of our volunteers knew an old woman who would love this dog.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
In the morning, she accompanied me to work. I took good care of her and added a blanket to her box, her only shelter for the time being. I took many pictures of her and posted them online, hoping that someone would pick her up so that she could have a home to spend the rest of her time. It wasn't a pleasant job, though. However, what excited me was that her health improved.
Paragraph 2:
One of our volunteers knew an old woman who would love this dog. I tried my best to find the old lady. She fell in love with the dog the moment she saw her. I told her that the dog was in terrible condition and needed to be taken good care of. She never minded, replying that it would make her feel she was still useful. Later on, I learned that the dog had the most joyful time with the old lady and died peacefully.

Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So, when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it. She didn't feel sad because she wasn't leaving anyone behind.
She was eight when they moved to a new town. It wasn't that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids running around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids. So Katie went out. She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to muster up the courage to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn't do it.
She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was. The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll finally led her to the town's lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold. She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day, she would bring her friends here.
After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.
One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out. She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her. She hadn't heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving toward the bank.

【答案】Para 1:
“A swimming black dog!” Katie cried out in surprise. First she felt a little frightened, because the dog was huge and wet. Then she tried to calm herself and guessed that “maybe it is just hungry.” So she offered her sandwich to the dog. After finishing its meal, the dog walked up to her and sat down beside her. She bravely reached out her hand to touch its head and introduced herself to it. The dog nodded as if to say “Nice to meet you, Katie.” From then on, Katie and the dog became friends.

Every day, Katie brought five extra sandwiches for her friend. She told the dog everything that happened to her at school. Sometimes, she sang or danced and the dog just nodded along. For the first time, she didn’t feel lonely. When her classmates knew there was a lovely dog swimming in the lake, they went with her to play with it after school every day. They spent time with her and the dog. All of them played games, sang, and danced. Having many friends gave her joy.

One summer vacation, I learned some kids volunteered as guide dog raisers for a guide dog training center. Then I also wanted to take part in it. My parents supported it.
After I filled out the application form to be a guide dog raiser, two of the training center's workers came to my house to meet me and my family. They said, “After the volunteer helps raise a guide dog puppy for a year, the dog needs to be returned to the training center. There the dog will receive a five-month professional guide-dog training. Then the dog will stay with a blind person and help with his or her life.” The workers told us what a big responsibility it was to raise a guide dog puppy. And I promised I would do a great job.
We later got a call that our puppy was coming soon—a female yellow puppy. When Dad and I picked her up, I was glad. She was the prettiest dog I’d ever seen. Her name was Nisha. When I started working with Nisha, I learned right away how intelligent dogs are. Guide dog puppies seem to know they're special and were born to do special work. My main job was to help her grow, teach her basic house rules and how to get along with people, and let her learn about public places.
Nisha loved to ride in the car. I was allowed to take her anywhere a trained guide dog could go, including stores and buses. Nisha was a good listener. Whenever I felt I needed to talk to someone, Nisha was always there. She was a lovely puppy.
During the year, Nisha and my whole family developed a very close relationship. And we knew the day was coming when she would have to go back to the training center for the five-month professional guide-dog training. After that she would go to live with John, a blind man.

Sad though I was, I knew she was going to help people in need. Five months later, I got news that Nisha was passing each course for a trained guide dog. One day, I received a call from the center announcing that Nisha was to graduate as a guide dog and that she would be placed with John.
Para 2:
I was invited to present Nisha to John on her graduation day. Getting up early, my parents drove me to the training center. How excited to see Nisha again! She looked bigger and was happy to see us. I presented her to John, who thanked me for raising Nisha. I felt good, because I had played a part in helping John. As we left, I looked back and Nisha was looking straight at me. Then she looked up at John. She knew her job, and I knew they would make a great team.

Wylie lived in Scotland, far up on the hills, and helped her master take care of his sheep.
Wylie watched over the sheep and the little lambs like a soldier, and never let anything hurt them. She drove them out to pasture when it was time, and brought them safely home when it was time for that. She loved her work, and was a wonderfully fine sheepdog.
At last her master grew too old to stay alone on the hills. Before he left, he gave Wylie to two kind young men who lived in the nearest town; he knew they would be good to her. They grew very fond of her, and so did their old grandmother and the little children; she was so gentle and handsome and well behaved.
But after a while, the family noticed something very strange indeed about their dog. Every single Tuesday night, about nine o’clock. Wylie disappeared. And she would be gone all night. But every Wednesday morning, she was at the door, waiting to be let in. Her silky coat was all sweaty and muddy and her feet heavy with weariness, but her bright eyes looked up at her masters as if she were trying to explain where she had been.
Week after week, the same thing happened. Nobody could imagine where Wylie went every Tuesday night. They tried to follow her to find out, but she always slipped away. It grew to be a real mystery. Where in the world did Wylie go?
In the city near the town where the kind young men lived was a big market. On Tuesday nights, the farmers used to come down from the hills, and drive their sheep through the city streets into the pens, ready to sell on Wednesday morning; that was the day they sold them. The sheep weren’t used to the city noises and sights, and they always grew afraid and wild, and gave the farmers and the sheepdogs a great deal of trouble. They broke away and ran about, in everybody’s way.

【答案】Para 1:
But just as the trouble was worst, about sunrise, the farmers would see a little silky dog come running. In and out the little dog ran like the wind, round and about, always in the right place, driving the sheep mind like a good school-teacher and never frightening them, till they were all safely in! All the other dogs together could not do as much as the little strange dog. As soon as her work was done, she was off and away like a fairy dog. Week after week, this happened and nobody knew who the little strange dog was.
Para 2:
One day, Wylie went to walk with her two masters. They happened to meet some sheep farmers. The farmers stopped short and stared at Wylie, and then they cried out, “Why, that’s the dog!” And so it was. The little strange dog who helped with the sheep was Wylie. Her masters, of course, didn’t know what the farmers meant till they were told all. But when hearing about the pretty strange dog, who came to market alone, they knew at last where Wylie went every Tuesday night. And they loved her better than ever.

The lumps after the allergy tests showed their terrible messages that I am allergic to cats, dogs and fur. I cried because I knew what this meant. Our pets would have to go.
Our family of five lived on the Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. My mother found neighbors who were willing to take care of our sweet dog, Tramp. My sister gave her guinea pig to one of her friends at school. But I begged my parents to let us keep my beloved cat, Grungy.
We had adopted Grungy six years earlier in Turkey, from the Cat Lady, a kind figure who rescued wild cats. Grungy was once lost and found, in Rome, when he somehow missed our return flight back to the States, and again when he finally arrived at the base in Rhode Island, and escaped from his cage. For days, he walked around the airfield and followed an airmen until my dad learned from the airman and brought him home.
After that adventure, Grungy faced a new challenge: Because of my allergies, he would have to be given away. My mother wrote an announcement on the local newspaper. “Wanted: Loving family for a unique cat. Serious inquiries only. ” She added our phone number and placed the ad. But I prayed that no one would call, but several people did. And our parents decided to meet a young couple who lived two islands away on Boca Chica Key. The young man had no children, but the young man’s wife worked at home, so Grungy wouldn’t be lonely when he adjusted to his new life.
I stood silent the day that they arrived to see my cat. I didn’t want to like the soft-spoken man or his pretty, dark-haired wife. To our surprise, Grungy allowed them both to pick him up and hold him. Both of them stroked his soft head and promised to take good care of him. We were all sad to see Grungy go especially me. When I couldn’t control my tears, I ran to my room.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
Two weeks later, the woman called, upset, to tell us that Grungy had somehow left their house. Our neighbors and friends helped to search. We even called the police, but we had to give up after some useless efforts. Grungy was just gone. As time passed, we accepted a new lifestyle with no dog barking at the doorbell and no guinea pig crying for lettuce every time the refrigerators door was opened. At least we knew the location of those former furry family members. However, where could Grungy be?
Paragraph 2:
Weeks later, when I opened the door in the morning, I saw Grungy sitting there. He was dirty and thin, but I didn't care. I picked him up and cried. Somehow, my charmed cat had traveled from Boca Chica Key to Key West on a journey that is about eight and a half miles of highway. How he managed such a miracle remains a mystery. Maybe that’s because he loved us so much. To this day, we still remember the cat that walked miles to come home. And we should never underestimate the power of love.

Teresa Perkins was driving 80 miles per hour along Route 340 on Wednesday. The woman knew she was going too fast, but it was the only hope she had. Her dog, Jett, was dying in the backseat. About a half hour earlier she had received a call from her daughter, who had been playing with Jett, a 3-year-old, 120-pound black German Shepherd. The ball they were playing with got stuck in Jett’s throat. The dog was struggling to breathe.
Perkins raced home to see if she could help, but the dog slobber (口水) had made the ball too slippery to pull out by hand. They put the dog in the backseat of her car and began their race to the vet in Waynesboro.
About halfway there, Perkins got caught in construction traffic. Jett was struggling even more at that point and Perkins knew she only had minutes, but she was now stopped in a line of cars. She began blowing her horn (喇叭) to get the attention of someone, anyone, when three construction workers walked up to her. In a panicked voice, she told them her dog was dying.
“By then my dog was pretty much dead,” Perkins said on Wednesday night. “He was lying in the car, not moving. I had heard him breathe, broken- winded, but then he quit. I was wildly crying and praying.”
Cavaja Holt was one of the workers standing there. He stuck his hand down the weak dog’s throat and pulled out the ball, but Jett still wasn’t breathing. “And the guy behind Holt tried to breathe in Jett’s mouth,” Perkins said. “And he did.” Perkins jumped out of the car and helped start doing first aid on Jett. The two were working together to save the dog’s life, when Holt cried, “He’s awake.”
Perkins began crying and just thanking Holt over and over. When she saw the line of cars, she thought she had made a mistake going that direction. It turned out that it was the best choice she could have made.

【答案】one possible version:
Once Jett began breathing again, Perkins continued her trip to the vet. By the time she arrived, the dog seemed to be doing much better. The staff at Animal Health Care Center was expecting them and they ran out to help Jett immediately. Then the staff checked Jett out to the full. After about a five-minute wait in the care, Jett was feeling well enough to walk, and they let him go home.
After arriving home, Perkins thought she was so anxious that she forgot to ask Holt's name then. Later that night, she posted the story on Facebook, asking to locate Holt. Meanwhile, Holt had posted the story also, hoping to find out how the dog was doing. Within minutes, someone connected the two. Perkins immediately called up him to express her appreciation. The next morning when Jett was fully recovered, Perkins drove back to the construction site and thanked Holt in person. She got a photo of him with the dog and posted it online to praise his great deeds.

Ellen Kalish runs a center for rescued wild animals in New York. One day, a woman called and asked if she could help an owl (猫头鹰). The caller told her the tiny owl was in the Christmas tree in a shopping center in New York! Kalish was surprised. She has been helping wild animals for 20 years, but she has never heard a story like that.
The traditional Christmas tree was a 75-foot-tall Norway spruce (云杉) from Oneonta, New York. When workers were unwrapping (移去……上的包裹物) the tree, one of them spotted the creature. He was buried in the base of the tree, Kalish said. At first the worker thought the owl might be injured. He would not let go of the tree’s base (底座).
One of the workers called his wife and told her he was taking the owl home. He asked if she could find a place that could help wildlife. The woman then called Kalish.
Kalish then set out to fetch the owl. On the way, she looked at the pictures the woman sent her on the phone. The owl is the smallest of his kind living in the Northeast. How did he end up being stuck in the tree in the first place? “He could have gone to the tree to rest or sleep and got trapped later,” she said. “Maybe once the tree was loaded onto a truck, the branches made it hard for him to escape. Or he might have been too scared to move.” Her driver guessed the owl might have flown in from Central Park in New York, but Kalish didn’t agree. “That would be the last place he would want to go,” Kalish said. “The area around the tree is busy and noisy. Why would he pick that tree if he had a choice not to? He’s smart, and he wouldn’t do that.”
Para. 1: An hour later, Kalish met the woman who first called her at a gas station.
Para. 2: The owl didn’t spend much time at the center.
【答案】Para 1
The woman handed her a cardboard box with the owl inside cautiously. Kalish was more than delighted that the little creature didn't look worse in relatively good shape. Then Kalish brought the bird back to the wildlife center. She gave him plenty of water and left two mice in the plastic pet carrier. They were gone by the next morning. The owl spent most of his time eating or sleeping. On Monday, he went to the vet to get some X-rays to make sure there were no broken bones.
Para 2
The owl didn't spend much time at the center. He was released soon and flew away at dusk when owls normally wake up. The scene was quiet and quick. Kalish brought a camera to take pictures of his flying away. She was convinced that both the owl and she would keep the precious moment in mind, which was considered as the miracle of the year at Christmas.
