    一、读后续写
    1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my cars. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in, a play in front of two hundred people. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and-proved I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs. Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." 'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of the public to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try?" A few excited hands shot up—mice, of course, was not one of them—ad Mrs. Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

Steve, a twelve-year-old boy with alcoholic parents, was about to be lost forever, by the U. S. education system. He could read, yet, in spite of his reading skills, Steve was failing. He had been falling since first grade. Steve was a big boy, looking more like a teenager than a twelve-year-old, yet, Steve went unnoticed…until Miss White came.
Miss White was a smiling, young, beautiful lady. For the first time in his young life, Steve couldn't take his eyes off his teacher, yet, still he failed.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. Steve hurried through his tests, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school, but in the woods, where he often escaped alone camping there, trying to shut out the sights, sounds and smells of his alcoholic home. No one checked on him to see whether he was safe. No one knew he was gone, because no one cared. Strangely, Steve never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss White's impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
"Steve!" Startled, he turned to look at her.
"Pay attention!" She began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
"You all did pretty well," she told the class, "except for one boy, and it breaks my heart to tell you this, but…" She hesitated, pinning Steve to his seat with a sharp stare, her eyes searching his face.
"…The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!"
She just stared at Steve, as the class spun around for a good look. Steve dropped his eyes and carefully examined his fingertips.
After that, Steve still wouldn't do his homework. Even as the punishments became more severe, he remained stubborn.
"Just try it! ONE WEEK!" He was unmoved.
"You're smart enough! You'll see a change!" Nothing fazed him.
"Give yourself a chance! Don't give up on your life!" Nothing.
"Steve! Please! I care about you!"
Wow! Suddenly, Steve got it! Someone cared about him? Someone, so beautiful and perfect, CARED ABOUT HIM?!
    Paragraph 1
Steve went home from school, thoughtful, that afternoon.

“Late again, Mavis! How many times have I told you to come back in time to help me cook dinner?” asked Mrs. Muntari.
“But, mummy, I can’t just walk out in the middle of a game!” said Mavis, who was nearly breathless after running all the way home.
“You shouldn’t be playing the game in the first place,” Mrs. Muntari said as she stopped cooking and looked at Mavis.
“But, mum, I want to play football. Why can’t I? You never tell Adibe or Senzo not to play football. I had to leave the game at half time and rush back so you wouldn’t get cross with me,” said Mavis.
“You’re a girl! It is as simple as that. Boys and girls have different roles to play. I have 11 hungry mouths to feed and I need your help!” Mrs. Muntari tasted the porridge and added some more water. You’re the oldest girl not working, so it is your job to help me. That is the way of our people. Now go and fry some more chicken. Kulu had to help me since you were not here. She burnt her finger and is still crying. I even had to ask your cousin from next door to come and help me.”
At the dinner table, Adibe and Senzo were excitedly talking about today’s game, while eating the chicken that Mavis had fried. They talked about how Mavis scored in the first half with a power shot from the halfway line. It was a great goal as their team was losing 1-0 at that time.
Dad came home then and brought the boys a local newspaper, in which there was news about football scouts from England visiting Ghana. These scouts had asked to be allowed to visit various schools to look for players of the future. Adibe and Senzo looked at each other and cheered, “Wow, I’m going to be like Essien!” And they started arguing which one would make it as a superstar.
Mavis knew that her parents would never allow her to play football. But she decided to secretly take this chance. She began to think about what she could do.

Craig watched his old sister, Riley, and her friend Liz race up and down the lake on their skates, avoiding other hockey(曲棍球) players. Their skate blades looked like silver smoke. When the game was over, the girls skated up to the bench where Craig was sitting. Craig asked Riley what skating felt like.
“When I go really fast, I feel like I am flying,” she said.
That is silly, thought Craig. Flying is something birds do in the air, not something people do on ice skates.
Then he watched Riley go back out on the ice. She skated around and around the edge of the lake with her arms pumping and her scarf trailing behind her. Soon she went so fast that her arms looked like wings and her scarf looked like a feathery tail. Maybe skating really was like flying.
When Riley sat down to take her skates off, Craig said, “I wish I could fly.”
Riley retied her skate laces and bent next to Craig. “Get on my back,” she said, and Craig did. Riley started skating, but Craig didn’t feel like he was flying. It just felt like a skating piggyback ride.
“You are too heavy,” Riley said, “I can’t go fast when I am carrying you.” She skated slowly back to the bench. Craig got off her back. “Even if you could go fast, I wouldn’t be flying.” he said sadly. “I need skates to fly.”
Riley didn’t say anything on the walk home, but a few days later she asked Craig if he wanted to go skating.
“To watch?” he asked. “No, to skate,” she said cheerfully. “Mom and I found a pair of my old skates. They might fit you.” The skates were a little big, but when Riley stuffed newspaper in the toes, they fit. Craig couldn’t stop smiling. He didn’t want to take them off, but he had to so he could walk to the lake. Riley and Liz went with him. They carried their hockey sticks and a wooden chair. Hardly had they got to the lake when Craig put his skates back on and Riley helped him onto the ice.
    Paragraph 1:
Then she put his hands on the back of the chair.

Father’s Day was in two weeks. I didn’t know what to get Dad. Last year I made him a photo album. This year I wanted to do something different.
At dinner, Dad accidentally dropped his favorite blue tie into his soup bowl. The tie was ruined. I suddenly knew what to get Dad for Father’s Day!
“How much does a tie cost?” I asked Mom the next morning.
“Depends,” she said.“ Some can cost twenty dollars. Do you have enough money. Carter?”
    “No, ” I said sadly.
When I got to my room to change into my school clothes I noticed a hole in my shirt.
“Mom, I need you to sew(缝补) my shirt, I said loudly, rushing out the door to the school bus.
At school I picked at the hole in my shirt. I thought about how I could come up with enough money to buy a tie. I took a deep sigh, and played with the hold some more. As the hole grew in size, an idea sprung into my mind.
After coming home from school, I dug through my closet trying to find other worn clothes.
“Mom! "I yelled down the hall heading towards her.
Can I cut these clothes up to make Dad a patchwork(拼缝) tie for Father’s Day?” I pointed out the holes to Mom.
    “ I guess,” he said.
“And,” I added, “Can you show me how to sew and make tiny stitches(针脚)?”
“Yes, Carter. Let s start now before Dad gets home.” Mom said, heading for her sewing supplies.
I followed Moms instructions and started making a patchwork tie. I gently pressed my foot on the foot pedal(缝纫机脚踏板) . Suddenly, the needle stopped and the machine made a horrible sound. “No!” I said.
“Try again, Carter, ” Mom instructed.
I took a deep breath and gently applied the pedal again. Unluckily, I failed again.

I woke up excitedly. This day was special. It was my birthday and I was sure that I was going to receive a great deal of wishes and presents this year. I got off from my bed and rushed to my bathroom to get dressed in the best possible manner. I wore the beautiful dress that I had bought especially for this day, dressed my hair and went down for breakfast.
Mom was in the kitchen. I flashed a bright smile at her, waiting for her to wish me and give me a hug. But my smile soon disappeared as my mother started rolling with laughter. I was confused. I asked her what was the matter. Controlling her laughter, she managed to answer me, which sounded something like, “Why are you dressed up like that early in the morning? Are you alight?” I wanted to burst out in anger. I wanted to tell her that I was dressed up because it was my birthday! But then I decided not to tell her myself, and I changed into a casual dress.
After a few moments, my brother and my father came for breakfast as well. I gave them both the same flashy smile, but was heartbroken instantly when neither of them wished me. I thought that maybe they are planning a surprise birthday party for me, and that was the reason none of them wished me. I felt excited as I love surprise birthday parties.
All day long, I stayed in my room so that my family could easily prepare for my party. In the evening, my mother came to me and said that she was leaving for her friend's house and if I wanted to come along as well. I knew she was trying to fool me and she only wanted me to get dressed for the party. I replied to her in affirmative(肯定的) and started dressing up. When I finished, I closed my eyes and stepped out of my room. Then I opened my eyes and…
WHAT? The house was looking exactly like it had always been! No balloons? No ribbons(丝带)? No friends? No party?

One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you ok?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help? First, he wiped up the crumbs of cereal he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother’s favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothing inside. He had watched Mom do laundry lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally, he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.

I had moved to Arizona about two weeks before the start of my junior year of high school, so not only was this a new school for me, but also a new state and I did not know anyone.
On the first day of school at lunch after getting my meal, I sat down at a table in the courtyard. As I began to eat, I looked around at the other tables and saw another girl sitting alone, so I decided to go and sit with her. Anyway, there was no reason for me to have a whole table to myself, and who knew maybe I could make a friend. I walked to check and said, “Excuse me, do you mind if I sit with you?” She was surprised at first, but then smiled and said, “No, I don't!”
We hit it off immediately and became close friends throughout the next two years. Towards the end of our senior year, she told me that she had been accepted to an out - of - state college and would be moving away after graduation. I was sad that I would miss her but at the same time was really happy for her.
She then shared with me something very moving. “Do you remember the first day of school when you came over and sat down with me during lunch?” she asked. “Of course! Why do you ask?” I replied.
She continued, “I want to let you know how special you are and that you make a difference. I was severely depressed that day, because something unhappy had happened to me that morning. I had been being sad since the morning and nobody realized my sadness. It had just broken me down. If you hadn't appeared, I would be probably in deep sadness for a long time after I got home from school.”

Her name was Mrs Thompson. And as she stood in front of the 5th grade class on the very first day she looked at her students and said that she loved them all the same. But that was impossible because there in the front row was a little boy named Teddy Stoddard. Mrs Thompson had watched Teddy the year before and noticed that he didn't play well with the other children, that his clothes were messy and that he constantly needed a bath. She paid no attention to Teddy.
However, when she read his file, she was in surprise. Teddy's first grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is a bright child with a ready laugh. He does his work neatly and has good manners...he is the joy to be around. ”His second grade teacher wrote,“Teddy is an excellent student, well liked by his classmates. But he is troubled because his mother has a deadly illness and life at home must be a struggle. ” His third grade teacher wrote,“His mother's death has been hard on him. He tried to do his best but his father doesn't show much interest. ” Teddy's fourth grade teacher wrote, “ Teddy is withdrawn and doesn't show much interest in school. He doesn't have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class.” By now, Mrs Thompson realized the problem and she was ashamed of herself. She thought that she could make a difference.
She felt even worse when her students brought her Christmas presents, wrapped in beautiful paper and tied with pretty ribbons, except for Teddy's. His present was clumsily wrapped in the heavy, brown paper that he got from a grocery bag. Mrs Thompson opened it in the middle of the other presents. Some of the children started to laugh when she found a stone bracelet(手镯) with some of the stones missing, and a bottle that was onequarter full of perfume(香水).

Peter woke up early in the morning. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible.
“Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I've been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.”
Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently.
“The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said.
“So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down.
Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got 100 percent on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter's was an English-Chinese dictionary —the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment.” Peter thought.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-o-n-t-r-i-b-u-s-i-o-n,” he whispered. He had spelled it wrong.

As a child, I had a humiliating experience on February 14h. Now that I’m a teacher, my students celebrate the day with love.
“I’m going to tell you a story,” I tell my class of high school seniors. All eyes look up. Nothing quiets a chatty group of teenagers faster and causes them to put down their phones more effectively than the promise of a story. “It’s a tale about love. And heart break “I pause for dramatic effect. “Andhumiliation.” Their eyes widen. “Mine.” Now I have them.
“In sixth grade,” I begin, “I fell madly in love. His name was David. He was tall and cute, kind of a bad boy. He had no interest in me at all. So it was Valentine’s Day, elementary school style. Our parents bought us those valentine cards for everyone in class.”
“Then it was party day. I spilled my cards onto my desk, and amid many small envelopes, I saw an enormous one. My mind raced: ‘Wow—someone likes me enough to buy me this giant card. Who could it be from?’ With trembling hands, I tore open the envelope and drew out a sparkly image of a queen seated on her throne(御座). The heading read, ‘To a Queen of a Valentine.’”
I give the class a mean a meaningful look. “Slowly, I turned the card over, and at the bottom I saw the signature and almost fainted: David. It was all too perfect to be real. Then my eyes traveled up to the writing above his signature. In large, uneven letters, he had written me a special message.”
My students lean in, waiting. You could hear a pin drop. “It read, ‘To the Ugliest Girl in Our Class.” There are audible gasps. Mouths drop open. Some look down at their desks, seemingly embarrassed for me.
“Well, it ruined Valentine’s Day for me. It shook what little faith I had in myself for a long time after. But I survived. And now I refuse to give this holiday of love to the meanness of one terrible boy, it’s given me the motivation to celebrate kindness instead of cruelty.” I smile.

    12.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Katie was exceptionally small. We were in the fifth grade, but she was as short as a third grader. Although her body was small, Katie was big at heart. She had a sharp mind, too. Sometimes she got her share of teasing, but Katie knew how to handle it. All the kids who knew Katie liked her a lot.
Katie loved helping others in the class, so whenever someone was stuck on the computer he always called her for help and advice. Katie loved jokes and she always had a joke that would cheer someone up whenever he was down. She was truly the most kind and generous friend anyone could ask for.
But the other day she was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid; a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn't imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging lunches, Katie? What happens to your homemade lunch?” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said, “I don't believe you, Katie.” She didn't care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie?” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

Dannis was waiting at the airline ticket counter when he first noticed the young woman with shiny black hair. She wore black boots of soft leather. Dannis struggled to see her face. She was ahead of him in line, but it was not until she bought her ticket and turned to walk away that he realized how beautiful she was, who was fair-skinned and big-eyed. She seemed aware that he was staring at her and lowered her gaze abruptly.
His flight was leaving in an hour. To kill time, Dannis stepped into an airport bar and ordered a cup of Scotch. While sipping it, he caught sight of black-haired girl in the leather coat again, deep in conversation with a blonde girl.“Invite her for a drink?” Dannis hesitated and didn’t come up to her.
When next he saw her, Dannis was buying a magazine and became aware someone was pushing him. At first, he was startled (受惊吓的) that anyone would be so close as to touch him, but when he saw who it was, he smiled.
    “Busy place,” Dannis said.
She looked up at him and blushed. Wordlessly, she moved away and joined the crowds in the terminal.
Dannis was at the counter with his magazine, but when he reached into his pocket for his wallet, the pocket was empty. Where could I have left it? His mind was racing, the credit cards, the cash, the identification card, etc. His stomach stirred with something very like fear. “The girl who was so near to me!” he said to himself. All at once he understood she had picked his pocket. What should he do?
First, find a policeman, and tell him what has happened. He would probably never see his wallet again. Dannis gritted his teeth. When glancing around for the police, suddenly,he spotted the black-haired girl, seated against a front window of the terminal. She seemed absorbed in a book.

Niesha could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today had been Niesha’s turn. However, her hands had shaken so badly that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice had become softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts had kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up. on yourself.” Mr. Roberts had hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha had nodded, grateful for the chance. She had gone as quickly as she could to her next class. She had kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first- not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

I have been a teacher for more than thirty years and Mr. Rowe is one of the best teachers I have ever worked with. He had so much from watching him.
He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven in the fourth grade. Steven was one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. He couldn’t stand school. He didn’t like being picked last for kickball. He didn’t like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn’t like himself.
The first day Steven walked into Mr. Rowe’s classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr. Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven’s shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr. Rowe welcomed him: “Hi, Steven. I’m happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year.” Steven looked around the room as if Mr. Rowe must be mistakes. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So, while Mr. Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr. Rowe chose Steven to pitch (投球) the kickball. “Hey, Steven,” Mr. Rowe said, “You are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick.” Mr. Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could did. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball, Steven sat as closer to Mr. Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands. When he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr. Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.

School mornings were always busy. The first sentence I usually heard was, " It's time to rise ! " It was Mom's loudest voice and there was no way I could pretend not to hear it or hide from it.
"Okay, Mum. I'm getting up and dressed ! " I would manage to call back
Mum spoke loudly again as she announced, " Breakfast is ready!"
By then, I couldn't get to the kitchen fast enough. In fact, it was a race between my sister, my brother, and me.We usually seated ourselves at the same time, sometimes knocking each other out of our places. After breakfast, we all rushed out to the bus stop as we took our lunch bags that contained a sandwich, fruit and dessert.
Then, one day, much to my surprise, there was no dessert in my lunch! What could have happened to it? Did Mom forget to make or buy it ? " Oh, well, " I thought. " It's only one time, so it's no big deal. " But, for the next few days, my lunch contained no dessert ! So one day,
after school,as soon as I got home,I asked,"Mum!Why haven't you been putting a dessert in my school lunches?"
Mum answered, " Why, Eugene, I have been including a dessert in your lunch. If you're not getting them, then who is?"
So then we thought of my activities and what I did with my lunch each day. As soon as I arrived at school, I always put my lunch in the classroom closet(储物间)along with all of the other lunches. And that brought us to Carl, the bad boy of the third-grade classroom. The teacher didn’t like him in class and would send him to the closet, where he would spend most of each day.
Carl lived in a group of foster home(集体寄养之家).He, was loud and somewhat of a thief, and he would take almost anything that wasn't fastened down, so he wasn't welcome at school. Mom and I concluded that with nothing else to do Carl was probably going through the lunches and eating what he liked.

As I was coming into Middle School, Grade Six, I was really excited because my friend Jennifer was going to be in the same Middle School as me! At first things were great, she introduced me to her fiend, Amy and we had lots of fun together. Then things started to change. Jennifer was very controlling: I couldn't make new friends, because if I hung out with different people, she would decide that I was "mad at her and Amy". So I didn't make new friends, and pretty soon being Jennifer's friend became a battle between Amy and me.
Jennifer wanted to be the "leader" of our little group. Amy and I were never partners in class projects or gym; it was always, "Who gets the privilege(荣耀)of being Jennifer's partner." It was either Jennifer liked me and she left Amy out or Jennifer liked Amy and she left me out. Amy and I both wanted to be Jennifer's number one. Being Jennifer's friend became the most important thing in the world.
I always waited for Jennifer and Amy after classes, so we could walk together to our next class. Amy and Jennifer chatted by Jennifer's desk as Jennifer packed her books up and I waited by the door. Sometimes when they left, they'd walk right past me. No "Thanks for waiting". No "Sorry we took so long". It was as if they couldn't even see me. Yet I still waited after every single class.
Most of the time we gossiped(传播流言蜚语)about people, and I soon realized that nobody was good enough for Jennifer. Jennifer had a list of bad things about everybody, even Amy. And I'm sure she had a list of bad things about me, too. After months of living through school this way, I had really changed. I was moody, depressed, lonely, and I didn't smile much. I spent lots of days trying not to cry. I felt so left out.

    The Voice of Rigo
Rigo had a loud voice.People were always telling Rigo to be quiet. His mother would tell him to use his quiet voice inside the house because the baby was asleep. His father would ask him to speak quietly in the car so that he could concentrate on his driving. His teacher would tell him to talk quietly so he would not bother others who were studying.
Not only did he have a loud voice, but Rigo liked to talk a lot.Whenever he had time, he would talk with his classmates, sharing everything he considered fun.He liked to yell and shout.Sometimes he just yelled, “Hey!” for no reason. He liked the sound of his very loud voice for he thought it had more penetrating (穿透的) power than that of an actor. But not everyone felt the same way.
When Rigo shouted goodbye as he left for school, his mother shook her head, “Rigo! Be quiet!” When his father drove him to school, Rigo said, “Hey! There's Chris!” He pointed at his friend, who was walking to school. His father shook his head.“Rigo, use a quiet voice in the car.” At school, his teacher talked to him three times about using his quiet voice. His classmates shook their heads, throwing an upset look at him when he talked aloud.
Later, Rigo had to sit by himself for a while. His teacher wanted him to practice being quiet.Rigo had to sit quietly for five minutes. It felt like five hours or five days. When the five minutes was up, Rigo went to his desk and sat quietly. It was not easy.
After school, Rigo was waiting for his father when he saw Chris again “Hey!” he yelled.“Chris! Hey!” The headmaster was walking by.Rigo was sure he was going to get in trouble for his loud voice. He looked quickly at the ground.Maybe the headmaster would keep walking.

Algebra (代数) was my last class of the day. After the class, Mrs. Sharpnack asked me to stay to discuss my midterm math exam, which I had failed. Although I did well in language and many other subjects, I wouldn’t be on the honor roll (光荣榜) that term if I couldn’t soon make big progress in math. In just a few weeks, the names of the honor roll students would be read during the class. I was so sad.
Seeing my sadness, Mrs. Sharpnack said, “Do you want me to spare some time to help with your math? I think you can make big and quick progress.” But I just wanted to go home and never think about algebra again. “No, thanks,” I said. And I explained, “Unlike other students in my class, I am just not good at this kind of math. And no amount of studying will change that.”
I almost cried when I talked about it. Mrs. Sharpnack comforted me, saying, “If we work together, I believe you can change it.” For a moment, I wondered if she would be right. “What time does your bus come?” she asked. I had 30 minutes left before my bus came, and I told her so. She asked if I would like to use that time to go over the math problems I had met. Encouraged by her, I answered. “I guess so.”
We started right then and made a plan to meet each day for two weeks, after which Mrs. Sharpnack would give me a test to check my progress. After Mrs. Sharpnack helped me go over a few problems that day, it was time for my bus to come. I waved her goodbye. In the following days, I continued staying with Mrs. Sharpnack after class. She went over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
Sometimes I still couldn’t understand what she had said. She stayed calm, though, and would think of a different way to explain the answer. The day to take the test came quickly.

Mom was in extreme pain of cancer. I sat outdoors, watching the bees flying from one flower to another. I studied Mom's face, thinking how I could take her mind off the pain she was suffering. Her strong belief had always inspired and encouraged me. It was my turn to do the same for her—to encourage her to cheer up.
“Are the flowers in the field beautiful?” Mom asked weakly. She managed to find beauty in nature. Suddenly, I had an idea and asked her, “How about getting some flowers we can plant together in front of the house?” Mom's face slowly lit up and smiled. She said, “It sounds great.” Then we slowly climbed into the car.
Soon, we were wandering through rows and rows of colorful flowers. Mom's pain was forgotten temporarily as she bent over to choose a bunch of red roses. “Oh, how beautiful,” she whispered, pressing the flowers against her face.
A young lady approached and said, “Hello, ladies. It's a beautiful day for planting flowers. My name is Jenny. You can choose and buy whatever flowers you like.”
She was young and beautiful and I said thanks to her. I hurried to Mom's side, “I think we will have enough flowers to plant, Mom. Would you mind waiting in the car while I pay for them?”
“Let me carry the flowers for you,” Jenny smiled and said, “You are so kind and patient with your mother.” I replied, “Thank you. Mom is experiencing great pain because of her cancer. What I am doing is make her happy and forget her pain.” Suddenly, Jenny froze in her tracks.
She said, “My mom has cancer, too. May I please add your Mom's name to hers? I'd be proud to pray for both of them—overcoming the difficulties and achieving a victory as soon as possible.”
