    A
Marathon is the supreme discipline of long-distance running. They are not only attractive for top athletes, but also for hobby runners. The choice of events is almost endless. Now we have put together some most breathtakingly beautiful ones that you’ll be tempted (诱惑) to run holding a camera.
    Ultra-trail Angkor, Cambodia
The newest of a series of Angkor marathons, this endurance test offers 32-km, 64-km and 128-km routes around the famous temples, including Bayon and Angkor Wat. Watch out for monkeys, and the gigantic tree vines that memorably hug some of the great buildings.
    Dodo Trail, Mauritius
Crossing rugged coastline and tropical forests, the Dodo Trail is full of wildlife, although the famous dodo bird remains, sadly, extinct. While the demanding 50km Xtreme route covers 828m-high Black River Peak, a beginner-friendly Mini Dodo Trail (10 km) is easier.
    Great Ocean Road marathon, Australia
Another well-known scenic coastal drive, southern Australia’s Great Ocean Road stages a footrace every May. Neck-ache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you’re lucky, a koala or two. Be warned, however, that the series of steep slopes make this one of the toughest marathons.
    Big Five marathon, South Africa
Marathon meets safari at the privately owned Entabeni Game Reserve every June. The start time is dependent on the race-day location of the Big Five members – African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos – as organizers try to guarantee sightings.
21.Which marathon is suitable for less experienced runners?
    A.Ultra-trail Angkor.
    B.Dodo Trail.
    C.Great Ocean Road marathon.
    D.Big Five marathon.
22.Why does the writer mention “neck-ache” in Great Ocean Road marathon?
    A.To highlight the wonderful scenery.
B.To present the difficulty of the event.
C.To attract attention to physical health.
D.To warn runners of dangerous animals.
23.What do the four marathons have in common?
    A.Risky and tiring routes.
    B.Beautiful coastal views.
    C.Chances to see wild animals.
    D.Fixed time for annual events.

    B
David Frank started working for tips when he was 11 years old, delighting restaurant diners in New York with his magic tricks. As a teenager he would make an average of $60-70 in an evening—not bad, but he wanted more. So he started reading research on tipping, and found a study showing that servers who left a sweet at the end of the meal could up their pay. He tried handing customers a playing card at the end of his act, which he hoped would persuade them to part with more cash. It worked.
Mr. Frank's findings confirmed the notion of the tip as a sort of reward for outstanding service. For a start, economists are puzzled by the fact that so many people give tips, voluntarily handing out cash for a routine service, when it is assumed that customers generally want to pay as little as possible for what they buy. But fuzzier factors also seem to matter, like the feelings of gratitude that Mr. Frank inspired. A Survey in 2010 by Ofer Azar of Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that 85% of American tippers claimed to be following a social pattern, while 60% said they tipped to avoid guilt.
During the pandemic these fuzzy factors appear to have strengthened. Mr. Lynn observed that people have been tipping more generously even while ordering take-away food.
The presence of a pandemic or of a magician performing at one's table are just two of many factors that may affect the size of a tip. A tipper may simply be touched by the server. If a waiter squats down beside you at the table as he or she takes your order, that often brings a higher tip. Good weather may encourage generosity too. Race can be an uglier factor. A study of tips for cab drivers found that black drivers were tipped on average at a rate of 13%, while white drivers got 20%.
24.Why did David Frank hand customers a card?
A.To delight the customers. B.To provide the best service.
C.To satisfy their needs. D.To increase his income.
25.What do we know about the tipping fact?
A.Customers want to pay as few tips as possible.
B.Most tippers in America tip because others tip.
C.Tipping is the best way to show gratitude.
D.Tipping is usually included in the bill.
26.Why does the author mention "take-away food"?
A.To indicate take- away food is more popular during pandemic.
B.To persuade readers to order take-away food in pandemic.
C.To emphasize that people tend to give more tips in pandemic.
D.To explain there's no need to tip in terms of take-away food.
27.What can we infer from last paragraph?
    A.The pandemic makes tips unaffordable.
B.The customers' mood influences their tipping.
C.Tipping has nothing to do with weather.
D.There are more white drivers than black ones.

    C
E-scooters are an increasingly common site on Britain’s roads and pavements. With an electric motor attached, they have become the go-to vehicle of unruly teenagers everywhere.
But here are two things that might surprise you: First, Even though they’re quite clearly being used by thousands of people, because of the way the law is written, e-scooters cannot use the pavements and cycle lanes, because they have a motor. But they can’t use the roads as motor vehicles either, because they are not properly licensed or taxed. And the second thing: I think they are brilliant. Because energy density and efficiency has improved, it has made it possible to strap a battery onto a scooter, and actually have it carry you far enough to be useful.
I’m enthusiastic about scooters because I think they’re like a Swiss Army Knife, and can help solve multiple problems in society. They’re much greener than cars, which is great for the environment. They’re much smaller too, so take up less space on the road. They could even help ease Britain’s ongoing housing crisis. Because e-scooters could expand the distance in which it is reasonable to commute, making more housing accessible to the people who need it. And from a less high-minded perspective, it’s impossible to deny that they’re huge fun to ride.
In 2020, the government authorized local authorities to permit trials of rental scooter schemes around the country. The scooters are operated by a range of providers, and can be picked up off the street by scanning a QR-code with an app. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Scooter users are already annoying — so wouldn’t legalizing them make them even worse? I’m not convinced. If e-scooters were legalized, they could be properly licensed and regulated. I also think if privately owned scooters were allowed, it would also incentivize good behavior, as scooter owners rather than renters would be more likely to, for example, own a helmet and take good care of their own equipment.
There is some good news for the sceptics though. At the end of last year, the government scooted the question of legalization into the long grass, announcing that instead of making a decision, the regional trials would be extended until November. So, my dream of an e-scooter utopia might have to wait for a bit longer.
28.Which of the following may be out of our expectation?
A.E-scooters are common on Britain’s roads. B.E-scooters cannot be used everywhere legally.
C.The practical value of e-scooters is limited. D.People prefer riding an e-scooter to using a car.
29.Why do e-scoters have a positive effect on the housing crisis in Britain?
A.More houses are acceptable to more people. B.E-scooters are great for the housing environment.
C.E-scooters take up less space in houses. D.It’s huge fun to ride an e-scooter in the house.
30.What does the underlined word “incentivize” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A.Encourage. B.Maintain. C.Restrict. D.Praise.
31.What is the government’s attitude towards legalization of e-scooters?
    A.Favorable. B.Cautious. C.Opposed. D.Indifferent.
    D
Trees are symbols of hope, life and transformation. They are also increasingly labeled as a straightforward, relatively inexpensive, and best solution to climate change. Lately, society has been putting a lot of pressure on trees to get the whole world out of the climate change emergency. Accordingly, enthusiasm is worldwide popular among governments, businesses and individuals for ambitious projects to plant billions, even a trillion more, so as to help cut current emission (排放).
“Trees are having a bit of a moment right now,” says Joe Fargione, an ecologist with The Nature Conservancy based in Minneapolis. “There’s no anti-tree lobby. Trees have lots of benefits for people. Not only do they store carbon, they help provide clean air, prevent soil erosion, shade and shelter homes to reduce energy costs and give people a sense of well-being.”
Yet, as global eagerness for adding more trees grows, some scientists are urging caution. Before moving forward, they say, such massive tree projects must address a range of scientific, social and economic concerns. Poorly designed projects that don’t address these issues could do more harm than good, the researchers say, wasting money as well as public goodwill. “There’s a real feeling that forests and trees are just the idea we can use to get some unspeakable support for many, perhaps more complicated, types of landscape restoration initiatives”, says ecologist Joseph Veldmanan.
The concerns are myriad: There’s too much focus on numbers of seedlings planted, and too little time spent on how to keep the trees alive in the long term, or in working with local communities. And there’s not enough emphasis on how different types of forests store very different amounts of carbon. There’s too much talk about trees, and not enough about other carbon-storing ecosystems. And over the last decade, a diverse garden of tree-centric proposal has spread across the globe. That can lead to all kinds of problems, Joseph adds. “For me, the devil is in the details.”
32.According to Paragraph 1, what is the global fever?
A.Getting rid of the air pressure of the earth.
    B.Launching environment-based movements.
C.Spending more time on global tree projects.
D.Planting more trees to handle climate change.
33.What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A.Tree-planting projects might be wrongly used.
B.There’s no scientific basis for planting programs.
C.Growing mere trees is just a waste of money.
D.Public goodwill is surely abused to a certain degree.
34.What does the underlined word “myriad" in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A.Unique. B.Precise. C.Many. D.Reliable.
35.How does the author like the tree-based idea to solve climate change?
    A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Neutral. D.Unclear.

根据第三个小标题下的“Neck-ache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you’re lucky, a koala or two.”(脖子疼可能是个问题:一个方向是风景优美的南海,另一个方向是美丽的森林,如果你幸运的话,还会有一两只考拉。) 故选A项。
根据第一个小标题下的“Watch out for monkeys, and the gigantic tree vines that memorably hug some of the great buildings.”(小心猴子,还有那些令人难忘的缠绕着一些伟大建筑的巨大藤蔓。),第二个小标题下的“Crossing rugged coastline and tropical forests, the Dodo Trail is full of wildlife, although the famous dodo bird remains, sadly, extinct. ”(穿过崎岖的海岸线和热带森林,Dodo Trail之路到处都是野生动物,尽管著名的渡渡鸟已经灭绝。),第三个小标题下的“Neck-ache could be a problem: in one direction lies the scenic South Sea, and in another handsome forest and, if you’re lucky, a koala or two.”(脖子疼可能是个问题:一个方向是风景优美的南海,另一个方向是美丽的森林,如果你幸运的话,还会有一两只考拉。)”以及第四个小标题下的“The start time is dependent on the race-day location of the Big Five members – African elephants, Cape buffalo, lions, leopards and rhinos – as organizers try to guarantee sightings.”(比赛的开始时间取决于“五大”成员(非洲象、非洲水牛、狮子、豹子和犀牛)在比赛日的地点,因为组织者试图确保能看到这些动物。)

根据文章第一段“He tried handing customers a playing card at the end of his act, which he hoped would persuade them to part with more cash.(他试着在表演最后递给顾客一张扑克牌,希望这能让顾客给她更多的小费。)”
根据文章第二段“A Survey in 2010 by Ofer Azar of Israel's Ben-Gurion University of the Negev found that 85% of American tippers claimed to be following a social pattern, while 60% said they tipped to avoid guilt.(2010年以色列大学调查研究表明,美国给小费人群的85%说,他们给小费是为了遵循社会模式,然而60%的人说他们给小费是为了避免内疚。)”
根据文章第三段“During the pandemic these fuzzy factors appear to have strengthened. Mr. Lynn observed that people have been tipping more generously even while ordering take-away food.(在疫情期间,这些模糊的因素显得似乎更强了。observed观察到,甚至是在点外卖时,人们也会给小费给得更多。)”可知,文中提到外带食物是为了证明在疫情期间,即使是外带食物,顾客给小费也给得更多了,故选C。
27.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“A tipper may simply be touched by the server. If a waiter squats down beside you at the table as he or she takes your order, that often brings a higher tip. Good weather may encourage generosity too.(给小费的人可能会很容易就被服务员所感动。

根据第二段中“But here are two things that might surprise you: First, Even though they’re quite clearly being used by thousands of people, because of the way the law is written, e-scooters cannot use the pavements and cycle lanes, because they have a motor.(但有两件事可能会让你感到惊讶:首先,尽管电动踏板车显然有成千上万的人在使用,但由于法律的规定,电动踏板车不能使用人行道和自行车道,因为它们有发动机)”可知,电动滑板车不能在任何地方合法使用可能出乎我们意料。故选B。
根据第三段中“They could even help ease Britain’s ongoing housing crisis. Because e-scooters could expand the distance in which it is reasonable to commute, making more housing accessible to the people who need it.(他们甚至可以帮助缓解英国正在进行的住房危机。因为电动滑板车可以扩大合理的通勤距离,让有需要的人有更多的住房)”可知,电子滑板车对英国的住房危机有积极的影响是因为更多的人可以接受更多的房子。故选A。
根据划线词后文“good behavior, as scooter owners rather than renters would be more likely to, for example, own a helmet and take good care of their own equipment”可知,如果允许私人拥有摩托车,这也会激励良好的行为,因为摩托车所有者而不是租赁者更有可能拥有头盔,并照顾好自己的设备。 故选A。
根据最后一段中“At the end of last year, the government scooted the question of legalization into the long grass, announcing that instead of making a decision, the regional trials would be extended until November.(去年年底,政府将大麻合法化的问题抛到脑后,宣布地区审判将延长到11月,而不是做出决定)”可推知,政府对电动滑板车合法化的态度是谨慎的。故选B。

根据文章第三段“Yet, as global eagerness for adding more trees grows, some scientists are urging caution.(然而,随着关于种植更多树的全球热的上涨,一些科学家强调要慎重)”以及“Poorly designed projects that don’t address these issues could do more harm than good, the researchers say, wasting money as well as public goodwill.(研究者说道,无法解决这些问题的那些设计较差的项目可能会带来更多的伤害,既浪费钱又无法获得公众的好感)”可知,植树项目可能被错误的使用了,只注重植树的数量,而未在意其质量,可能会带来更多的问题。故选A。
根据文章第四段The concerns are myriad:冒号后的内容“There’s too much focus on numbers of seedlings planted, and too little time spent on how to keep the trees alive in the long term, or in working with local communities. And there’s not enough emphasis on how different types of forests store very different amounts of carbon. There’s too much talk about trees, and not enough about other carbon-storing ecosystems. And over the last decade, a diverse garden of tree-centric proposal has spread across the globe.(太多的关注点落在了种植树的数量上,而未花时间来让这些树长时间存活,且未与当地社区合作。并且也没有足够去关注不同种类的树如何来储存不同量的碳。关于树有太多的言论了,但是关于碳储存系统的话题却太少。并且在过去的十年里,一个以树为中心的多样化的花园的提案已经传播开来)”可知,冒号后的内容解释了myriad一词,冒号后提出了很多的问题。由此可知,划线词myriad与many(很多的)意思相近。故选C。
35.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Yet, as global eagerness for adding more trees grows, some scientists are urging caution.(然而,随着关于种植更多树的全球热的上涨,一些科学家强调要慎重)”以及文章第四段“The concerns are myriad(存在着很多的额担忧)”可知,作者对于这种“以植树为方式来解决气候变化的”做法是持怀疑态度的。

36.上文“Bringing laughter, happiness and smiling to others is more about being light-hearted than it is about ‘being funny.’”(让他人开怀大笑,带给他们欢乐,微笑面对他人,这更多是一种轻松愉快的感觉,而非是“滑稽搞笑”)引出带给他人快乐这一话题。F项“不要觉得自己必须扮演喜剧演员的角色”解释了带给他人快乐不是指自己非得扮演喜剧演员,下文“Just feel happiness, be positive and be light-hearted. Such a mindset is naturally attractive to others.”(就是纯粹觉得快乐、积极、轻松无忧。
根据该标题对应段落“Joking is a great way to make others laugh and develop a new connection with people, but you shouldn’t depend upon making jokes at the expense of others, and don’t fall into the trap of making fun of others around you.”(开玩笑是让他人开怀大笑并与他人建立新关系的好方法,但你不应该总依赖于拿他人开玩笑,也不要错误地取笑身边的人。)
39.上文“you shouldn’t depend upon making jokes at the expense of others, and don’t fall into the trap of making fun of others around you”(你不应该总依赖于拿他人开玩笑,也不要落入取笑身边的人的陷阱)讲的是不能拿他人开玩笑,也不要取笑身边的人。E项“It may be funny, but it’s not attractive to laugh at others”(这种玩笑也许很滑稽,但是取笑他人并不讨人喜欢)承接上文,解释了为什么不要开他人玩笑,符合上下文连贯。故选E项。
40.上文“How do you break the uneasiness?”(你怎么打破这种局促感呢?) 故选A项。

M:Yes,I'm with the Colbert Corporation. We're having a company party on February 15th next week, and I need to arrange for all the food and drinks.
W:OK. How many people do you expect to take part in the party? And will it be an indoor one or outdoor one?
M:About 108 employees will be there. In addition,12 managing staff will also be present. And we'll hold it indoors in one of our large conference rooms.
    W:OK. I see.

W:What are you going to do in Canada?
M:My lab is working together with a research station in Canada so I will work there for a long time.
    W:How long will it take?
M:Three months, probably. It'll depend on how everything is going.
W:It's cold there. You may need some heavy clothes. Oh,this suitcase is probably too small.
M:Don't worry! I do most of the work in the lab. But I do need a large suitcase. I'll take a lot of research materials with me.
W:So why don't we go to the shop to get a larger suitcase?
    M:OK. Let's go.

W: Hi, Dad. Is your classmate still working in the power company?
M: Yes. He is now the manager. Why do you ask?
W: Oh. There is a summer vacation practice project of us students. Can you help me out? Besides, several of our classmates’ plan to have a picnic this morning.
M: OK. You can come to the power company for the practice after that. I can drive you there or you can take a taxi.
W: There is no need to do so. I can walk there.
M: Shall I telephone my classmate to tell him that you will visit him?
W: I’m not really a visitor. I plan to communicate with the workers and learn about their company culture.
M: That will be a really good practice experience and you can learn much from it.
    W: I can’t agree with you more.
M: Now, you have to prepare for the coming picnic. Enjoy your time.
    W: Thank you, Dad!

M:Welcome! Could vou tell us what's going on?
W:Sure. This week Westfield Radio runs its annual competition. Last year it was to find the best dancer, and next year it will be the turn of local actors to enter. But this year we're looking for the best singer in our city.
    M:And what are the rules?
W:Not many. You need to phone your entry. We don't accept entries through the Internet or by fax.
    M:Right. Well,it's school holidays this week,so what's on offer?
W:The sports hall will open an hour earlier than usual at 8:00 am and shut later at 10:30 pm instead of nine.
The indoor football ground is always popular and has to be booked in advance.
M:But what about the swimming pool?
W:Not quite such good news,I'm afraid. It will be open about a week later than planned, but good news now-there will be no charge for swimmers for the first week. It's the same size as the old one,but it is much better equipped.
    M:That's great.

M:I started my own company,CyberEdit, when I was a freshman. Most students have to write essays, and I aimed to provide computer editing services for them. During one summer vacation,I worked for an Internet company and in the evening,I spent another four hours working on my website. It's not easy to develop a business. If you hope to be financially independent, you must do something while you are young and you can work long hours. For a long time,I was editing nearly ten documents a night. I spent fifty hours a week doing this. It was hard. Then I hired my first four employees, and I never edited a single document again. The next year,I turned down my summer job at a big investment bank and spent the vacation expanding CyberEdit. In December,Wired magazine contacted me and asked me to write an article about my life. After the article appeared in March, interested investors began to contact me. In June, one of them decided to invest a large sum of money in the company. So the Wired article brought me over a million dollars in funding! More than anything else, good publicity helps a new business attract investors and customers. Investors came to me,not because I was making money and employing fifty college students, but because they read about it in Wired magazine, and saw it on ABC World News Tonight. My advice to young people who consider starting a company is:Do it now! Don't delay starting it until you've finished school or had some “real-world experience”.
