When Jordan Reeves was 8 years old, she couldn’t wait to start a new dance class. But as she was warming up, she noticed that some of the kids were staring at her. Did she wear her clothes backward? Were her clothes dirty? No. The kids were looking at her left arm. It stops above the elbow (肘).
“I’ve had to deal with people staring at me in my whole life,” Jordan, now 13, explains. Although Jordan sometimes feels uncomfortable when people stare, she’s proud to be different. And she’s using her difference to inspire other kids with disabilities.
Growing up, Jordan attended camps for kids with limb (肢) differences. Then, three years ago, she was invited to a special workshop. She was challenged to design a new prosthetic (假体的) arm — one that would turn her disability into a “superpower”.
Jordan teamed up with designers to create an arm. They used a 3D printer to create the prosthetic arm. Instead of paper, the 3D printer used plastic to create an arm shaped like a unicorn’s horn Jordan called her invention Project Unicorn.
Jordan’s mom shared the story of Project Unicorn online, and it quickly spread on social media. Jordan was already a mentor (导师) to other kids with disabilities. Now she had a bigger audience and could share her message with more people.
In 2017, Jordan and her mom formed an organization called Born Just Right to help other kids with limb differences. They’re making it possible for kids from across the US to create their own limbs, as Jordan did.
“We want to show kids that anything is possible,” Jordan says. “Your differences are amazing. You never know what amazing things you can do with them.”
    24. What is the text mainly about?

Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none — that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas (画布) — the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was walking aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has travelled over 1,800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed — All he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙) and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, in search of perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance (自由职业的) drawing, was created in the desert sands of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary named “Sandman” in 2005. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand — he is also an excellent cook and founder (创办人) of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto (座右铭) is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.
    28. What do we know about Denevan?
    A. He used to be a cook. B. He has a gift for creating sand art.
    C. He puts his work on show regularly. D. He showed artistic talents at a very young age.

    C. It takes a long time for the storm to destroy Denevan’s work.
    D. Denevan is very particular about his drawing tools.
    30. What does Denevan enjoy about his work according to the text?
    A. Walking a long distance. B. Waiting for the storm to come.

    31. Which of the following can best describe Denevan?
    A. Generous. B. Open-minded. C. Imaginative. D. Traditional.

The oceans have a plastic rubbish problem, and it’s growing by 8 million tons a year. Three years ago, a Dutch teenager named Boyan Slat designed a solution: an ocean rubbish collection device that would collect ocean plastic without harming ocean life.
These days, Slat is anxious to put his ocean-cleaning idea to the test. A passing grade might lead to the removal of nearly half of the plastic rubbish floating (漂浮) in the Pacific Ocean. But the process needs to be tested in real-world conditions before it can be fully started — or beat the criticism (批评) of scientists who are doubtful that it can work.
Slat’s idea is opposite to existing oceanic cleanup methods: Instead of sending ships out to run after floating rubbish, position a fixed, floating, V-shaped buffer (缓冲器) in the ocean so that water moves through it, funneling (使流经漏斗状空间) plastic rubbish into a container while allowing animals to swim past the net-free device.
To test the idea, Slat and his company, Ocean Cleanup, plan to place a 6,561-foot-long float in the Korea Strait. If realized, it would be the largest floating structure ever used. If the technology works, Ocean Cleanup hopes to build a 62-mile-long system that would float somewhere between Hawaii and California. This one would be big enough to deal with an area containing millions of tons of plastic rubbish.
When it first appeared on the Internet in 2013, Slat’s plan caught hearts around the world. But the scientific community doubts whether it would work, how effective it would be, and its possible environmental influence. Slat and the 100-member staff of his company, Ocean Cleanup, answered last year with a 530-page report stating that a 62-mile-long model would remove 42 percent of the plastics in the Pacific Ocean in less than 10 years.
    32. What is the purpose of Boyan Slat’ invention?
    A. To remove ocean plastic. B. To catch scientists’ attention.
    C. To gain fame. D. To beat the criticism of other teenagers.
    33. What do we know about Slat’s invention?
    A. Its position changes with the wind. B. It collects rubbish with some nets.
    C. It works mainly with the V-shaped buffer. D. It uses funnels to control the floating plastic.
    34. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Slat tested the device in the Korea Strait.
    B. Slat’s device works well in the Pacific Ocean.
    C. Ocean Cleanup built a 62-mile-long floating structure.
    D. Ocean Cleanup needs to prove the value of its new device.
    35. What is the scientific community’s attitude towards Slat’s invention?
    A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Uncaring. D. Objective.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. “The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze (吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a hose ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. “Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven (编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.

42.C根据第一段中“... the would-be doctor pulled out the buds…”
    47.A 根据后面的内容“….people started cheering…”
51.B 根据“Hatami backed away, letting them do their job.”
52.A根据下文“.….where doctors treated him for a heart attack.”
54.B 根据下文“.. doctors say he is doing well.”

    Dear Sir or Madam,
It is a great idea to hold “the most beautiful student” activity. In my opinion, the candidate should set a good example to others and have the following good qualities such as selflessness, bravery and honesty.
My classmate Li Lei is such a person. Not only is Li Lei always ready to help others, but he is hard-working and intelligent as well. Therefore, I strongly recommend Li Lei as “the most beautiful student”.
    Yours faithfully
    Li Hua

    Paragraph1:
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. Its abrupt appearance scared my horse, making it run off the track wildly. I spared no efforts to hold on as hard as I could and my dad was trying to keep up, extremely worried about my safety. Fortunately, minutes later, the horse stopped before a river, out of breath. Relieved, we looked around trying to find the track. However, it was nowhere to be found. So aimlessly did the frightened horse run that we got lost unconsciously.
    Paragraph2:
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Nothing in sight was familiar and neither did we know where the farm house was. Just at the point of desperation, from the distance came a faint voice. “It must be Uncle Paul,” I exclaimed excitedly. That we didn’t come back for dinner made him realize something unusual might have happened. So my uncle went out to look for us. Finally, we reached our uncle’s farm house safe and sound.
