Agortino by Alberto Moravla (1944). When my son turned 13, my mother said to me, “You have to read Agostino.” Agosino is a perfect novella and perhaps the best literate ever written about being a 13-year-old boy. It’s painful and tender and funny. A masterpiece. The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen(196771).Ditlevsen was a 20th-century Danish writer. Her trilogy of short memoirs, Childhood, Youth, and Dependency, is becoming the subject of a literary craze. As 8oon as you sink your teeth in, you’ll understand why. The books are fascinating. The problem is they bite back. I’m still recovering. Star by Yukio Mishima (1960). There are a lot of Mishima novels that haven’t been translated into English. This novella about a movie star losing touch with reality only recently was. “A true star, ” Mishima writes, “never arrives. Showing up is for second-rate actor who need to seek attention. ” Want to seem glamorous? Stay home. Attending things is for the second-rate. The Expendable Man by Dorothy B. Hughes (1963). Donna Tart once recommended Hughes to me. I’m so glad she did. While Hughes’ most famous book, deservedly 80, is In a Lonely Place. However, he says today’s society is threatened by many elements that weaken our ability to connect. He calls on us to take action.Climate-A New Story by Charles EisensteinWith an entire chapter stating climate change, Charles Eisenstein advocates expanding our limited focus on carbon emissions to see the broader picture beyond our short-sighted and incomplete approach. He thinks rivers, forests and the creatures of nature are valuable in their own right, not simply for preventing a rise in temperature.Who Can You Trust? by Rachel BotsmanIn this book, Rachel Botsman reveals that we are at the point of one of the biggest social transformations in human history. She says we might have lost faith in many other people, but millions of people exchange digital currencies or find themselves trusting a robot. She says if we are to benefit from this shift, we must understand the mechanics of how trust is built, managed, lost and repaired in the digital age.The Happiness Fantasy by Carl CederstromCarl Cederstrom traces our present-day conception of happiness. He argues that happiness is now defined by a desire to experience physical pleasure. He says, however, there is a vision of the good life which promotes deeper engagement with the world. I tended to call him once or twice a year on an as-needed basis. I had reached the point of being able to sort through most problems on my own. But life had—as it occasionally does—grown suddenly complicated.I had been trying with no success to have a second child. We had made an abrupt move from New York City to rural Connecticut in the wake of September 11. My mother had recently died. I was still shrinking from a difficult and frightening year. I found myself questioning everything entirely: “Does any of this make sense?”“Everything about you makes sense,” said my therapist.I found these words enormously comforting as they always are from him. I so badly wanted the narrative of my life to make sense. Two brief failed marriages—one at 18 the other at 28? Makes sense. My uneasy relationship to faith and doubt, having been raised in a strict, religious home? Makes sense. The emptiness I continued to feel at the early loss of my father? Makes sense. My impossibly anxious relationship with my mother? Make sense. My husband, a screenwriter, is often asked to adapt biographies for film, and the struggle, he often says, is that lives have first acts, but they don’t have third acts(until they’re over) and second acts are just one damned thing after another. So how to understand the narratives of our lives? How to trust that everything about us makes sense?Lately I’ve been wondering if perhaps the answer to this is not to even attempt to smooth things out. Sure life’s road is nothing if not filled with unexpected surprises, both happy and not-so-happy ones.21. What made the author begin to question everything?A. Her old age. B. The therapist’s intervention.C. Complicated life. D. Breakdowns in her life.22. How does the author make her point convincing?A. By giving examples. B. By making a comparison.C. By using data. D. By presenting findings.23. What of the following statements does the writer agree with?A. Every dog has its day. B. Enjoy your life while you can.C. Life is made up of sobs and smiles. D. One careless move may lose the whole game. 河南省濮阳市2021-2022学年高三下学期开学摸底考试英语试题If you’re a camping lover, the scenery of the following campsites will provide you with an experience that you will never forget.North Rim Campground, Grand Canyon, ArizonaAddress: North Rim, AZ 86052, USACamping in the famous Grand Canyon, with its layers of million-year-old red rock, is the favorite thing for many people. Sadly, however, many of them are not needed because of effective onboard navigational (导航的) systems. As they were designed to be visible, lighthouses often become very distinctive landmarks: their shapes and colors stand out against the surrounding landscapes. Consequently, they make for some fantastic photo opportunities and are usually set in impressive spots along rocky coastlines or wild seas. Galle LighthouseLocated within the ancient walls of Galle Fort, the lighthouse of the same name has protected the surrounding waters ever since it was first built in 1848. While it is the oldest lighthouse in the whole of Sri Lanka, the current lighthouse’s blindingly bright white walls only date back to 1939, when it was rebuilt after a devastating fire. Hercules Tower LighthouseEver since the second century AD, Hercules Tower Lighthouse has watched out over Spain’s North Atlantic coastline. This remarkably makes it one of the very few oldest lighthouses still in operation today. Such is its age that it is believed to have been modeled after the Lighthouse of Alexandria—one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Big Red LighthouseStanding proudly at the south side of the Holland Channel, Big Red Lighthouse presents a striking red appearance to increase its visibility in the daytime. Another unusual quality of Big Red is that the rare lighthouse watches over two bodies of water—Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan.1. Who are probably the fans of lighthouses nowadays?A. Photographers.  B. Historians. C. Sailors.  D. Scientists. 2. Which of the following is currently used for navigation?A. Galle Lighthouse.  B. The Lighthouse of Alexandria. C. Big Red Lighthouse.  D. Hercules Tower Lighthouse. 3. What is special about Big Red Lighthouse?A. It has the same name as the ancient walls. B. It borders Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan. C. It gives off red light to increase its visibility. D. It is modeled after the ancient wonder.   四川省成都第七中学2021-2022学年高三下学期入学考试英语试题The long summer vacation is a perfect time for reading, and these are the books you'll want on your reading list.
