Do you know which is the best place to visit? Well, for me the best place is The Netherland. When I went there last August, I had a great time.
Everything about The Netherland is wonderful. There are so many places to visit and things to do. There are beautiful beaches and the water is so clean that you can see colorful fish. Another great thing is the fresh fruit. Some people there put clothes around their heads to carry things. And they put the things on top and make them stay balanced. It’s surprising!
One of the most interesting things is the Glistening Waters. The name describes what it is. It’s one of the lakes in the world where a rare (稀有的) living thing can live. Have you ever seen fireflies (萤火虫)? Well, when you touch the water, it glows bright green like a firefly. It was so beautiful. We went to swim there in the dark. There are just so many great and interesting places to visit in The Netherland. I will never forget swinging on the grass. Some grass closes when it feels your touch.

Babies do it for up to eighteen hours a day. Mrs. Thatcher and Napoleon both said they only needed to do it three or four hours a night. Sleep. No one can live without it. But how much do we really need?
Research by the National Sleep Foundation in Washington says that we all need eight hours’ sleep every night. Scientists have found that people who sleep for less than six and a half hours a night are more often ill than people who sleep for eight hours. Going without sleep also increases the chance of serious illness. Workaholics who sleep for less than five hours often die young, and do less well at work.
The scientists found that, on average, adults sleep for seven hours a night, with 32% sleeping less than six hours. It also says that the idea that we need less sleep as we get older is completely untrue. “People have no idea how important sleep is to their lives,” Dr. Thomas Roth, director of the Foundation says. “Good health needs good sleep.”
“But not too much of it,” says Professor Jim Home of Loughborough University. “Sleep is like food and drink,” he believes, “You would always like to have a little bit more, but that doesn’t mean you need it.” Professor Home studied a group of people who could spend as many hours as they wanted in bed; after ten hours they didn’t find it any easier to get up. And people who sleep for more than nine hours a night die younger than people who usually sleep for seven or eight!
31. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that _________.

D. About one third of adults sleep for less than six hours a night.

A
阅读下面短文,完成51-55小题。(共10分)
Reading is fun! Besides for fun, you want to learn more about the texts while reading. One way we can do (A) this is by finding out the theme of the texts.
It is the “big idea” that runs through the text, connecting the characters and events. It is also what the writer wants to tell us through the story. Sometimes the theme of a text isn’t told directly. For this reason, you have to use clues (线索) in the text to find it out. Themes can be ideas like family, friendship, love and so on. The theme might not be just one word, but it might be an idea such as “Friendship is important.” There may also be more than one theme in a story.
The following steps may help you find out the theme of a text.
Read through the whole text quickly
(B) Usually characters change as the story goes on, so the theme you get at the beginning might not be true at the end! So you need to read through the whole text first.
Find out the clue
After reading the whole text, try to answer the following questions. What important events happened during the story? What was the problem? How did the problem get solved? How did the character(s) change? What did the character(s) learn? The answers may help you to get the clues.
Get the big idea
To get the writer’s purpose of the text, you can read it again. When you read, think of the following questions. Was most of the plot (情节) around friendship? Did the characters solve problems with their families? Did the main character learn the importance of friendship? If one of the answers is “yes”, you may get the big idea.
Check the big idea out
If you’ve found a “big idea”, go through the text to find the evidence (证据) that supports this idea in the text. For example, if there was only one small problem with a character’s family, then “family” might not be the theme of the text. You might find more evidence for other themes.
Have you got the way to find out the theme of a text? Get your favorite book quickly and see if you can find the theme out!

Where did the moon come from?
How much do you know about the moon? Is it older or younger than the Earth? Where did it come from? Let me take you back to the earliest days of the Earth, four and a half billion (十亿) years ago. At that time, the Earth had no moon. It was moving around the Sun alone.
The early Earth was hit by rocks and comets (彗星). Today, there are no marks left from this huge ball. But to know more about the hitting, I’ve come to the Arizona desert to see a great hole in the ground. This is a beautiful, large and round hole, a near-perfect circle. It was formed when a shooting star fell down strongly into the Earth fifty thousand years ago. It’s amazing how much damage that one passing rock can cause.
It must have been a mess with many rocks hitting the Earth. And then along came something much, much bigger. Another planet, the size of Mars, came into the path of the Earth. It was on the way to hit the Earth. It hit the Earth with a very fast speed. It was unbelievable and difficult to guess the power broken out by such a hitting! The hitting sent a large amount of running rocks into the path of the Earth. After the strong hitting, the broken pieces got together into a ball and the moon was formed, just 14,000 miles away from the early Earth. This was the closest point it could have been. If it were any closer, the gravity (重力) would have pulled the broken pieces falling down strongly back to the Earth and there would be no moon.
Today the moon is just a rock without light, but back then, it was a hot and round ball in space burning brightly. It must have looked amazing: a really large orange disc in the sky.
Imagine the scene: the first moonrise over the early Earth. Our world was no longer alone. It has a huge, powerful neighbor, and ever since then, the Earth has been a very different kind of planet.
56. When was the Earth moving around the Sun alone?

57. What hit the early Earth?

58. How did the moon form after the strong hitting?
