What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are feeling sad or depressed? You probably pat them on the back or shoulder, or maybe you give them a big, warm hug.
We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes (猩猩) have this ability, too. Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, US, went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos (倭黑猩猩), which are closely related to humans.
The researchers analyzed the bonobos' reactions after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.
However, researchers said that not all bonobos were able to comfort others. In the protection centre, many bonobos are orphans (孤儿)whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more anxious in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, making them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.
"Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse at comforting others,” Professor Frans de Waal, one of the researchers, told The Telegraph. "Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others.” This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who seem more capable of handling their own emotions—for example, the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others.
    8. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Orphan bonobos never give a hand to friends.
    B. There were 370 bonobos involved in the research.
    C. Moms play a significant role in handling kids' emotions.
    D. The ability to comfort others is unique to human beings.
    9. The underlined word “curb" in the 5th paragraph probably means ________.
    A. express B. observe C. hide D. control
    10. Where are you most likely to find the passage?
    A. A science journal B. A travel leaflet
    C. A book review D. A science fiction
    11. What's the main purpose of this passage?
    A. To uncover the mystery of Apes.
    B. To inform readers of a new study.
    C. To provide better protection for Apes.
    D. To compare human behaviors with Apes.
    D
Kermit the Frog, a popular puppet character from US kids show Sesame Street is probably most well-known for saying, “It’s not easy being green.” Well, our famous frog friend won’t have to worry much longer! It seems that the color green is coming back in style in 2020.
Based on fashion collections made for spring/summer 2020, it is clear that major brands have been inspired by nature’s beauty. The new designs include a variety of leaf prints and flower fashion. Models wore dresses covered in a leafy-green print. These elegant dresses were perfectly paired with shoes and accessories inspired by tropical flowers. At Versace’s fashion show in Milan, US actress Jennifer Lopez closed the show in a remake of the jungle print dress she wore to the Grammy Awards 20 years ago. The dress certainly amazed the crowd.
This new trend in seeing the color green as fashionable shouldn’t come as a surprise, though. The popularity of the color has actually been growing for a while now. In 2017, Pantone named green its color of the year as a symbol of new beginnings. Also, with an increased focus on the environment, designers and fashion brands are trying to make their clothes more eco-friendly and sustainable(可持续的).
Green is a strong fashion trend for 2020 and it seems that it is here to stay. According to the famous Dutch trend forecaster, Li Edelkoort, green will be a major color of the decade. She believes the new “Green Wave” is linked to a hunger for nature. “The need for green is so powerful that it will turn around fashion and design without any doubt, ... it is impossible to ignore,” Edelkoort writes on her company website describing the new trend.
There is much more to green than it being just a color. Edelkoort continues, “But maybe the most important thing about green is its power to bring joy.” Maybe it’s easier to be green than Kermit originally thought.
    12. Why does the author mention Kermit the Frog in Paragraph 1?
    A. To introduce the new trend in 2020.
    B. To draw reader’s attention to the topic.
    C. To show that green is not welcomed in the past.
    D. To show that Kermit the Frog will be popular in 2020.
    13. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
    A. Green has been popular since 2017.
    B. Green was once the fashionable color in 2017.
    C. Green, as a new trend in 2020, isn’t unexpected at all.
    D. Green was recognized as a symbol of new beginnings.
    14. Which statement is Li Edelkoort most likely to agree with?
    A. Green is just the strong fashion in 2020.
    B. Green is so powerful that it can bring happiness.
    C. Green is the symbol of new beginnings.
    D. Green is a fashion trend rather than anything else.
    15. How will the new trend probably influence people’s daily life?
    A. They will prefer a more eco-friendly and sustainable life.
    B. They will be dressed in green.
    C. They will get close to nature to have a picnic.
    D. They will decorate their houses with green things.

    School Phobia
School phobia is a type of illness which causes the students, typically between the ages of 8-13, to be afraid to go to school. Symptoms (症状) include stomachaches, tiredness, shaking, a racing heart and frequent trips to the toilet.
16 Most commonly it is the result of separation anxiety, but it can also be caused by different kinds of stress. A child who has recently moved, suffered a loss, or gone through a parents’ divorce may develop school phobia, and phobias can also develop in response to an unrecognized learning disability, and poor self-image.

17 He or she may become physically ill w hen ordered to school, or pretend to be sick to avoid going. When the child arrives at school, he or she may run away, or develop behavioral problems in class. When school is discussed, the child can become impatient, upset or angry.
Many techniques can be used to manage school phobia. But research suggests that much more effective treatment is required for school phobia to prevent problems developing in later life. Children with this condition usually benefit from seeing a psychologist or doctor. 18 As soon as a school phobia is identified, parents should take action too. Like other phobias, school phobia gets worse if it is left untreated, and it can prevent the child from succeeding in school. 19 If bullying (欺负) is a cause, for example, the bullying situation should be solved. A teacher can meet the child at the door and take him or her to class, and provide support so that the child feels a friendly adult is always available.
Changes at home can include supportive language from parents, along with support like assistance with homework. If a child lacks confidence, parents may encourage the child to take up new hobbies. 20 Parents might also talk to their children about their own fears of school and how they got over them, and their own enjoyment of school and school-like activities.
    A. It w ill help children to feel good about themselves.
    B. But a child with phobia refuses to accept adults’ support.
    C. A child with school phobia usually refuses to go to school.
    D. Adjustments can be made at home and in the classroom to help.
    E. This common phobia is associated with a wide variety of causes.
    F. The most effective treatment is to help the child have a sense of success.
    G. And the assistance can help parents and school officials support the child.
