Laird Kay had been a designer of wine storerooms for 12 years. But he never forgot his first love, photography.
He started contributing as a photographer—mainly product shots. But as Kay took his photography further, he found himself hanging out at airports for the first time in his life, combining his photography skills with his other early love—airplanes. Asked to choose a symbol of beauty, most people might think of a work of art. He, however, would say an airplane.
He started doing more and more airplane photography. More airlines found him on social media and wanted to work with him. Laird Kay, who fell in love with planes as a child on vacation and who has always seen aircraft as objects of beauty, as well as of convenience, became an airplane photographer.
However much love you have for the industry, being an airplane photographer has its drawbacks.
Sometimes it rains when Kay has been flown in for a shoot—"you go with it," he says. And for someone who isn't great with heights, as he isn't, it can be tricky. "I was raised 10 feet, looking down on an A380. It was terrifying, but once you were there, you were concentrating on getting the shots. But I've got sweaty hands just thinking about it." he says.
Laird Kay is the living symbol of the term "getting there is half the fun". Except in his case, it's more like 99% of the fun! A look of absolute joy washes over him when he's on a plane. His art is also influenced by his travels as a young boy to South Africa, his education as an urban planner and designer—and his extremely sensitive eye that doesn't miss a single detail.
4. What makes Kay love airplanes that much?
A. Their beauty in his eyes. B. Their providing comfort.
C. His hanging out at airports. D. His experience as a designer.
5. How did Kay feel when photographing on an A380?
A. Fearful. B. Thrilled. C. Honored. D. Regretful.
6. What is the last paragraph about?
A. Kay's attitude towards fun.
B. Kay's great influence in art.
C. Contributors to Kay's success.
D. Several ways of getting great joy.
7. What does Kay's story tell us?
A. Well begun is half done.
B. The person who is cornered will fight.
C. Where there is love, there is pleasing success.
D. Man learns little from success, but much from failure.

Imagine you have a picture puzzle with 10,000 pieces but no picture on a box. In fact, you don't even have the box—it was destroyed nearly 2,000 years ago. These puzzle pieces are the remains of frescoes(壁画) in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A. D. 79. Some pieces are missing, others are broken. How would you solve this puzzle?
Scientists at the Italian Institute of Technology have a plan: Send in the robot. Their project called RePAIR (Reconstructing the Past: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics meet Cultural Heritage) combines robotics, AI and archaeology(考古学) in an attempt to reconstruct architectural characters of Pompeii, because they're either too complex or would require impossible amounts of human labor and time.
RePAIR's unnamed robot must have a combination of brains, strength and a sensitive touch. The brains will come from a mix of the high-tech computer's ability to scan the fresco puzzle pieces, machine-learning algorithms(算法) to solve the puzzles and human expert skill to guide the AI.
In Pompeii, the researchers are in the process of manually digitizing every fresco pieces in two test sites to create a digital database for the RePAIR robot. But once the whole system is fully operational, the robot will do the scanning process itself.
RePAIR is experimental. "We are focusing mainly on frescoes and we'll bring them back to life. But that's just the case study. If we succeed, we think we can export this technology to other objects or even, to other fields," says Pelillo, a professor of the University of Venice.
The RePAIR scientists aim to apply the robot in Pompeii by summer 2022. They have some time to experiment.
8. Why is a picture puzzle mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To establish its connection with the project.
B. To express the challenge of repairing frescoes.
C. To show the complexity of solving the puzzle.
D. To tell the exact number of the pieces of frescoes.
9. What does the underlined word in paragraph 4 mean?
A. By hand. B. In a hurry.
C. By machine. D. At a slow pace.
10. What can be inferred about the project from Pelillo?
A. It will benefit all the research fields soon.
B. It is intended to study other cultural objects.
C. It will rely on more technology to be functional.
D. It has great significance despite its present limitations.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Cultural Heritages Rescued by Hi-Tech
B. Pelillo, a Professor Focusing on Frescoes
C. Pompeii, a City Coming to Life Due to AI
D. Pompeii's Ruins to Be Reconstructed by Robot

Human brains are social organs—they're neurobiologically(神经生物) wired for connection. But just as our students' brains can be unfavorably affected by negative mentality and misfortunes, so can their parents' brains, affecting relationships with teachers.
What feels hurtful from a parent could be a worn-out brain, one that is trying to survive and so is defending itself and paying close attention to experiences or relationships that may feel terrifying or unsafe.
There are times when we may feel harmed by a parent, and we too can fire off sharp words if we re feeling misunderstood and angry. We may also unintentionally increase a conflict while moving farther away from cooperation and solutions. A poorly regulated educator cannot help a poorly regulated parent.
I myself have been blamed for my son's upsetting behaviors when he was struggling emotionally. Eleven years ago, when Andrew became a newcomer in high school, the anxiety and anger masking the fear he felt almost destroyed our family. We felt helpless and often hopeless.
In the middle of this scary time, I received an email from Andrew's Spanish teacher.
Dear Dr. Desautels,
I wanted you to know that Andrew finished his project today and had a smile on his face. I just wanted to share that with you.
Please let me know how I may serve you in the days to come.
Mr: Pickett
This email changed everything for me as a mom and as an educator. It helped our family experience a bit of hope and inspiration. Andrew worked hard for Mr. Pickett that term and ended with an A. He failed most of his other classes, but because of the connection this teacher created with Andrew, he felt heard, seen, and appreciated.
One thing I've learned is that I must regulate my own brain state before I interact with parents. Mr. Pickett's effort to foster a positive relationship with my family and my son has shown me a way to support both students and their parents.
12. Why does a parent say hurtful things?
A. They dislike teachers.
B. They are easily upset.
C. They are much too stressed.
D. They are willing to let their anger out.
13. What happened to Andrew as a newcomer in high school?
A. He was physically ill.
B. He had emotional suffering.
C. He tried to escape his family.
D. He quarreled with his teacher.
14. Why did Andrew begin to study Spanish hard?
A. He wanted to change everything.
B. He was persuaded by his parents.
C. He realized the importance of the subject.
D. He got care and appreciation from the teacher.
15. Who is the intended reader?
A. Students. B. Teachers. C. Parents. D. Doctors.

The Freshest Bakery was in a small town called Balminster. It made bread for supermarkets in a nearby city. The bakery had been there for a long time and most of the machines were old. The factory engineer, Frank, was good at maintaining(维修) the machines and most of the time there were no problems.
One Tuesday, Frank was finishing work. The manager came out of his office.
"You have a day off tomorrow," he said to Frank.
"Yes!" smiled Frank. "My son is graduating from university! Tomorrow I will go to the graduation ceremony!" He planned to leave at 6 am and had enough time to drive there.
At 4:30 am the next morning, Frank got a phone call from the factory, asking him to repair the broken oven at once.
Oh no! thought Frank. He hoped he could fix it quickly. He took his suit to the factory, so he could drive from there to the university.
When he arrived at the factory, all the workers and the manager were waiting for him. "Thank you, Frank," said the manager. "I know this is a big day for you, but we must bake the bread."
Frank went to look at the big bread oven. Then he went back to the manager. "I can fix it, but it will take a long time. I will be too late for the graduation ceremony."
The manager felt very bad. But Frank knew they had to make bread and get it to the supermarkets today, or the supermarkets would turn to a newer bakery. All the workers would lose their jobs.
Frank worked hard to fix the bread oven. At 7:00 am he finished, and the loaves of bread started rolling into the oven to be baked.
"We will be on time for our supermarket deliveries!" The manager was very happy. "You can go now," he said to Frank. "Enjoy your son's graduation."
"It's too late," said Frank sadly. "I cannot drive there in time."

故填however。
故填which。
故填for。

Usually the workers talked a lot and laughed, but today, everyone was very quiet. They felt sorry that Frank was going to fail to meet his son on this special day because of the maintenance. They were so grateful for what Frank had done for them that they concentrated more attentively on their work than usual in order to make more delicious bread, for which the factory would win a better reputation and thus make a healthier profit. Meanwhile, though eager to be with his son, Frank attempted to keep calm as if it had been a common day to relieve his co-workers. The manager could really feel how Frank felt. He kept wondering what he could do for him. Suddenly, an idea occurred to him.
"Fly to the university?" the manager remembered his old friend, a helicopter company manager. Jumping with joy, he got in touch with his friend right away and succeeded in renting a helicopter, with which he could make Frank's day. The workers were all relieved to see this surprise. With all the wishes from his co-workers, Frank managed to arrive at the university in time and spent great time with his son on this big day. After hearing what happened, "Dad, you really taught me a significant lesson that I'll never forget today. You did right. You are my hero. I'll always try to do something meaningful for others whenever I can." the son said with pride.
