About 8:15 one morning, I left for the airport to meet friends from Holland, only to discover that the plane was to be an hour late. The airport is close by, so I went home to wait.
Arriving at the house I found my dog, Clyde, in a very excited state, pushing his nose into a flowerbed near our front door then jumping back, barking (吠) all the time. I thought that perhaps he had seen a mouse among the leaves. Then suddenly he ran to the other end of flowerbed right by the front door, and began the same again—this time at a rosemary bush.
I decided to check with a stick. Do you know what I found? A snake! I was in shock! Quickly the cobra was slithering (蜿蜒着滑行) up the steps to our front door! Two quick blows from me with the stick and it was dead. Clyde was still unsure of it and kept barking.
I just had time to put the snake in a plastic bag and leave it for the rubbish truck, before returning to the airport to greet my friends. If the plane had been on time, things might have been very different here today! Friends have told me that the cobra aims to spit in a person’s eyes in order to blind them. Clyde’s barking warned me that something was wrong and danger was near. If Clyde had not been “on guard”, the cobra could easily have got into our house. There he might have lain hidden, ready to “surprise attack” me when I wasn’t expecting it. This reminds me of the fact that anything can happen at any time so we should be always “on guard”. We cannot take life for granted, and should appreciate every day that we have.
5. Why was Clyde so excited when the author returned?
A. Because a snake bit him. B. Because he saw a mouse.
C. Because his owner came back. D. Because he sensed danger was near.
6. Where did the author first see the snake?
A. At the rosemary bush. B. At the steps to the front door.
C. At the far end of the flowerbed. D. At the near end of the flowerbed.
7. Which of the following best describes Clyde?
A. Playful. B. Curious. C. Watchful. D. Courageous.
8. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Life Lesson B. A Miracle of Life
C. An Unforgettable Experience D. An Unexpected Guest
C
The results of a new survey have come out, uncovering young people’s thoughts on climate change (the long-term change in world weather patterns, including rising temperatures, caused by human activities).
More than 46,000 young people between the ages of 4 and 18 took part in the survey. Of them, 95% said they were worried about climate change, and 89% said that not enough was being done about it. But as we grow up, we, as a generation, understand what is going on with the world and should have a say.”
When asked who has the biggest responsibility to do something about climate change, nearly 35% said world governments. Respondents were also asked what they’d like to see happen. Proposals included that governments should listen to young people more, and that businesses should change the way they work to be more environmentally friendly.
The survey was conducted by VotesForSchools and UNICEF UK. VotesForSchools is an organization that works to make sure young people have their voices heard. UNICEF is short for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund. The United Nations is a group of 193 countries that work together on the challenges facing human. Both the survey and the COP26 climate change summit (峰会) took place on 31 October.

D. Teenagers’ concerns about rising temperatures.
10. Why are the two 14-year olds mentioned in Paragraph 2?

11. What suggestions have the teens given in the survey?
A. Improving people’s way of life.
B. Getting businesses to go greener.
C. Encouraging teenagers’ participation.
D. Changing governments’ focus of listening.

The Memory Box is my fifth book, which begins the story with a simple image of an old lady, Jenny, celebrating her 100 birthday in the care home where she lives. However, instead of being with friends and family, she’s in the company of strangers. Jenny has outlived everybody she has ever loved and it is to her young carer, Candice, that she turns when going through her memory box. As Jenny gently touches the smooth stone, picked up off a faraway beach a lifetime ago, she realizes there is one last journey she must make. She knows it will be painful but if she can talk Candice into accompanying her, she will get through it.
As a writer I try to keep to a writing routine (常规;惯例) similar to the common working week and am always at my desk by ten at the latest. I know this is not everybody’s idea of an early start. Then, I will go through the various writing work, followed by reading and editing what I wrote the day before. I set myself a target (目标) of 1,000 words a day and, while some days I may achieve many more than this, on other days it’s a right old slog and I can hardly pass the 200 mark.
Many moons ago, I attended a wing group. There, I got the best piece of writing advice from my teacher. She told us to employ the BOSHOK method, which stands for Bum On Seat, Hands On Keyboard. Or in my case, often, Bum On Set, Head On Knees. It basally means, just get on with it. She would always say, “The best advice I can offer to those who want to be writers is a quote from Elmore Leonard, ‘Try not to write the parts people tend to skip (跳过).’ Say it all really.”
12. What is the first Paragraph mainly about?
A. A review of The Memory Box. B. An introduction to The Memory Box.
C. The last journey of old lady Jenny. D. A life story about old lady Jenny.
13. What does the underlined phrase “a right old slog” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Simple but boring work. B. Easy and time-saving work.
C. Demanding but interesting work. D. Challenging and effort-taking work.
14. Who may be the target readers of this passage?
A. Reading lovers. B. Young carers. C. Writing strugglers. D. Group leaders.

How to Keep Building Your Vocabulary
No educative process is ever the end. It is always the beginning of more education and more learning. ____15____ The following are the ways that can help to keep your vocabulary growing and growing.
Read more. As an adult, you will find most of the sources of your supply of new words in books and magazines. If your aim is to have a superior vocabulary, you will have to make the time to read at least one book and several magazines every week. Not just this week and next weak — but every week. ____16____
Guess the meaning of a new word in the context. When you meet with an unfamiliar word, do not skip over it impatiently. ____17____ Then work out its possible meaning in the context of the sentence. Whether you come to the right conclusion or not will make a difference because you are, in this process, becoming more clearly aware of the word. As a result, you will suddenly notice that this very word pops up unexpectedly again and again in all your reading. And of course after you’ve seen it a few times, you will know fairly well not only what it means but the many ways it can be used.
____18____ Think of the areas that may possibly be unknown to you — psychology, science, art, music or whatever. Then explore them by reading books in the fields. In every field, there are books written for average, untrained readers that will give you both a good knowledge and at the same time add dramatically to your vocabulary.
Set yourself a goal. If you do nothing about your vocabulary, you will learn, at most, twenty-five to fifty words in a year. ____19____ This may sound ambitious — but you will discover vocabulary snowballs as soon as you start actively looking for new words.
A. Get prepared in advance.
B. Open you mind to new fields.
C. You must be willing to learn new words.
D. And that is the same case with vocabulary building.
E. I have never seen a single person with a rich vocabulary who is not a bookworm.
F. Instead, stop for a moment and read it aloud—get used to its sound and appearance.
G. However, with a clear goal, you can learn several thousand in the same period of time.
