There’s mre infrmatin ut abut the results f Finland’s much-watched basic incme experiment, and it shuld prve particularly interesting t plicymakers arund the wrld wh are cnsidering intrducing such a system.

On Thursday, Kela released further results, nting that survey respndents felt less stressed abut their finances and mre in cntrl f their lives but als that the basic incme appeared t change the way they felt abut sciety.
Here’s where it gets interesting fr plicymakers. Accrding t Kela, “Respndents wh received a basic incme had mre trust in ther peple and in public institutins pliticians, plitical parties, plice and the curts than members f the cntrl grup.”
The idea f basic incme has gained attentin in recent years, largely due t fears ver autmatin’s effect n emplyment. One f the greatest mysteries in science is just hw Earth went frm a planet with minimal xygen t the breathable air we have nw. Scientists lng figured that cyanbacteria (蓝细菌) were invlved, but culdn’t tell what started the great xygen-prducing cycle.
A new study published in Mnday’s Nature Gescience may prvide the key. It therizes that Earth’s gradually lengthened day frm six hurs t the current 24 hurs kick-starts cyanbacteria int prducing lts f xygen, making mst f life as we knw it pssible. Here are the takeaways f the study.
Abut 2. 4 billin years ag, there was s little xygen in Earth’s atmsphere that it culd barely be measured, s n animal r plant culd live. Instead, lts f bacteria breathed in CO2, and in the case f cyanbacteria, prduced xygen in the earliest frm f phtsynthesis (光合作用).
At first it wasn’t much. But in abut 400 millin years, as Earth’s rtatin (旋转) gradually slwed dwn and the day was lengthened frm six hurs t the present 24 hurs, the cyanbacteria breathed mre and mre xygen int Earth’s atmsphere until it reached ne-tenth the amunt f xygen we have nw. The increased xygen allwed plants t jin in the xygen-making party.
The authrs f the study put their thery t test with the bacteria fund n a 24-meter-deep seabed in Lake Hurn. They expsed the smelly bacteria, which are very similar t the cyanbacteria living arund 2. 4 billin years ag, t varying amunts f light, and fund that the mre cntinuus light the bacteria gt, the mre xygen they prduced.
“What makes the idea s cnvincing is that it desn’t require any big bilgical changes in bacteria r the wrld’s ceans,” said Tim Lyns, a prfessr at the University f Califrnia, Riverside, wh wasn’t part f the research team. “This may be a simple but plausible explanatin fr Earth’s xygen increase.”
32. What started the xygen-prducing cycle accrding t the new study?
A. Earth’s faster rtatin.B. The lengthened daytime.
C. The bacteria in Lake Hurn.D. The appearance f plants n Earth.
33. What is the main purpse f the experiment?
A. T prtect the cyanbacteria.B. T study the similarities f the bacteria.
C. T prvide evidence fr the thery.D. T imprve the xygen level n seabed.
34. What des the underlined wrd “plausible” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Reasnable.B. Sincere.C. Cmplex.D. Unacceptable.
35. Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Rtatin f Earth Is Slwing Dwn
B. Cyanbacteria’s Rle Has t Be Re-examined
C. A Breakthrugh Is Achieved in Ocean Prtectin
D. Earth’s Slwing Rtatin Increased Oxygen Prductin
