On June 7, 1195, a fiery spinning ball emerged frm a dark clud in the sunny sky clse t the Lndn city. An accunt f this extrardinary mment survives in a chrnicle (编年史) between abut 1180 and 1199 by Gervase. It wuld appear that this is the first credible recrd f ball lightning in England, and much mre cnvincing than the earliest Eurpean descriptin, which was believed t be frm the 17th century.
Histrians discvered the accunt f what appears t be ball lightning while explring Gervase’s recrds f natural events in his chrnicle, a treasure f histrical details giving insights int medieval culture. They dug thrugh hundreds f pages in Latin and came acrss this sighting. Gervase’s recrds f natural events appear within the histrical narrative, ften with n pening statement, and the accunt f ball lightning is sandwiched between the events f the changing f kings at that time.
N attempt is made t explain the “marvellus sign” in the sky seen near Lndn. Readers are left t draw their wn cnclusins. But Gervase appears t have been a sharp-eyed bserver and reprter f celestial (天空的)activity. His fanciful descriptin f ball lightning is remarkably similar t mdem reprts.
Fra lng time, ball lightning was regarded with skepticism. Althugh it is nw generally accepted as a genuine phenmenn with thusands f reprted sightings, there is still n accepted scientific explanatin f its rigin. Understanding the phenmenn has been blcked by an inability t reprduce the effect cnvincingly in the lab and partly because f the variatins in eyewitness reprts. Whatever the case, centuries later, Gervase's recrd makes stimulating reading fr mdem scientists as well as histrians.
    27. What's special abut the accunt f ball lightning by Gervase?

    29. It's difficult t explain the rigin f ball lightning mainly because f ______.
    A. n qualified scientistsC. n accurate reprductins
    C. few eyewitnesses reprtsD. little supprt frm histrians

    Why Are Tigers Orange?
The clrs f an animal serve lts f different purpses — fr instance, t help them hide int surrundings and escape frm being nticed by preys (猎物). Fr tigers, their ability t be invisible will just decide whether they catch dinner r g hungry. 31
As fr humans, range is a clr used fr items that need t stand ut, like traffic lights and safety vests. That's because we have what's called trichrmatic clr visin, which differentiate three types f clr: blue, green and red. 32 . But mst ther mammals, including dgs, hrses and deer, have dichrmatic (二色的)clr visin fr nly tw clrs: blue and green. Humans wh get infrmatin nly f blue and green arc cnsidered clr-blind, and can't distinguish between red and green clrs. 33
Mammals like deer arc the tiger's main prey, and their dichrmatic visin means they dn't see tigers as range — they see them as green. That makes the tiger much harder t spt as it's prwling behind a bush r cruching in the grass. Althugh green ligers wuld prbably be even harder t spt, evlutin (进化)just desn't wrk with the ingredients necessary t make green fur. 34 The nly recgnizably green mammal is a slth, and its fur isn't green in fact. That’s an alga that grws in its fur.
35 There seems t be n evlutinary pressure, particularly fr deer, which arc the main prey f the tiger, t becme trichrmatic. That's prbably because the tiger desn't knw it's range either. S, the evlutinary race really desn't exist fr that clr. It's just that the tiger has evlved ver the sweep f evlutin t have a clring, a hiding system, which prtects it very well in its jungle setting.
    A. Actually, there are n green furry animals.
    B. Orange fur makes tigers relatively easy t spt.
    C. The same is likely true fr dichrmatic animals.
    D. Then, why dn't deer evlve the ability t see range?
    E. S, f all the clrs they culd be, why are tigers range?
    F. Clrs f humans, eyes are quite similar t many ther mammals’.
    G. We share this style f visin with sme mammals like apes and certain mnkeys.
