Yesterday,I drove my 23-year-old daughter to the nearby counseling center, to attempt once again to complete the treatment. I did my best to encourage and give her inspiring support as she was feeling anxious of the whole process.
While we were waiting, just minutes before the center opened their door, a young girl the same age as my daughter, came in. She had a beautiful smile I remember, and spoke of her desire to make a difference to others like my daughter from all she learned through her past drug abuse. I felt that she was sincere in her desire. It had been two weeks since her stopping the use of drugs.
My daughter was standing next to me and focused on doing her best to stay calm on the
outside, while inside she was feeling quite anxious,so she barely noticed what this girl was saying. Yet,she did manage to open up and talk with her a bit about the noisy ceiling fan in the hall where we were waiting.
Next Friday, it will be a new opportunity for my daughter to try once again, as well as the possibility of being there for this young girl, too. I continue the example to sell love for my daughter, strengthening this skill, while encouraging my daughter’s positive changes.
I noticed yesterday, my daughter called her friends, “I am a strong woman!” This made me smile,as a sudden gift to me from when I had been speaking to her enthusiastically about how we are strong women, trying our best, and we overcome and win through our life challenges. Let her know I believe in her. While she was focused on the physical, in that moment, I think she was likely feeling strength in all ways, too. I hope so.

A. She was seriously ill. B. She lost bravery to face life.
C. She had to receive an operation. D. She was suffering from drugs.

A. The room facility. B. The anxiety of treatment.
C. The crowded waiting hall. D. The noisy patients around.
26. What do we know about the author’s daughter from the last paragraph?
A. She made friends with the girl. B. She was cured completely.
C. She regained confidence. D. She respected her mother.
27. What may be the best title for the text?
A. We’re Enough, Waiting for Challenges
B. We’re the World, Winning the Future
C. We’re Strong Women, Trying Our Best
D. We’re On the Hard Way, Lacking Self-Love
C
Sleep, considered a luxury(奢侈) by many, is essential for a person’s wellbeing. Researchers have found that insufficient sleep increases a person’s risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity, diabetes(糖尿病), and cardiovascular(心血管的)diseases. Now, a new study by Boston’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT) has found that getting sufficient sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.
Jeffrey Grossman, who led the research was not trying to find the link between sleep and grades when he handed out Fitbits to the 100 students in his introduction to Solid-State Chemistry class. Instead, the professor of Computational Materials Science hoped the popular wrist-worn device which tracks a person’s activity 24/7, would show a connection between physical exercise and academic achievement.
However, the study, published in the journal “Science Learning” on October 1, 2019, discovered a surprising insight. Then was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and his/her grade on the 11 quizzes, three midterms, and the final exam administered during the semester.
Even more interesting, it was also not sufficient for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead, it’s the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.
The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in the early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher - performing student. “When you go to bed matters. Grossman says. If you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn’t everything.”
28. What is the new finding about sleep?
A. It’s essential for a person’s health. B. Sleeping less may cause obesity.
C. Sleeping too much is dangerous. D. Enough sleep leads to better grades.
29. What does the underlined word “Fitbits” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Wearable devices. B. Questionnaires.
C. Fitness equipment. D. Smartphones.
30. Which of the following best describes the final result the new study?
A. Doubtful. B. Predictable.
C. Disappointing. D. Unexpected.
31. What will benefit students’ study according to Grossman?
A. Sleeping for 5 hours each day. B. Heading to bed at 3 a.m. every day.
C. Getting enough sleep while learning. D. Going to bed early only before a test.
D
“There’s no place like home.” This English saying has much truth in it: the best place to be is surrounded by our treasured possessions and our loved ones and with a roof over our head. And for many young adults, it’s the only affordable place to stay; somewhere where they can receive first-class service from mum and dad. But this comes at a price!
In some countries, it’s quite traditional for people in their late teens and early 20s to live at home with their parents, but in other places, flying the nest to start their own independent life is very desirable. But there’s been a growing trend,in the UK at least, for young people to return home to live—or not to leave home at all.
A survey by a price comparison website found that 18%of adult children in the UK said they were moving back home because of debt, compared with 8%last year. More young people had lost their jobs, and others couldn’t afford their rent compared with the previous year. So, it’s easy to see why they’re increasingly becoming home birds.
The BBC’s Lucy Hooker explains that many returning adult children enjoy home comforts. But for the “hoteliers”, that’s mum and dad,the survey found the average cost to them has gone up sharply, and that they are sacrificing luxuries and holidays to look after their “big kids”. Emma Craig from Money supermarket says, “They’re trying to look after their children more. If your child comes home and you see them struggling financially, you feel more awkward asking them for rent or to contribute. It tugs on your heartstrings more. ”
With parents spending around£1,886 on takeaway food, buying new furniture and upgrading their Wi-Fi for the benefit of their offspring, it’s easy for the returning children to put their feet up and make themselves at home. That’s before they learn a home truth—that one day it might be their own kids who’ll be checking into the hotel of mum and dad!
32. Which proverb might present the young British’s living conditions?
A. A lazy youth, an awful age. B. East or west, home is best.
C. Two heads are better than one. D. Nothing comes wrong to a hungry man.
33. Which might be the reason for the increase of home birds?
A. The popularity of living independently. B. Looking after their old parents.
C. The increase of unemployment rate. D. Their parents’ financial offer.
34. What’s Emma Craig’s attitude towards home birds?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Objective. D. Understandable.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Returning to live with parents comes at a price.
B. Parents are willing to receive their returning children.
C. Flying the net is becoming popular at present.
D. Home birds take it for granted to live with their parents.

On a Saturday afternoon in Wichita Falls, Texas, three kids talked and laughed happily as they took turns riding a scooter (滑板车) on their quiet street. 11-year-old TJ Smith had just jumped off the scooter as his neighbors Kim, age 7, claimed her turn, and Julie, 9, looked on. Ten minutes later, Kim sat down on the scooter to catch her breath. That was when a bearded man with a head of messy hair appeared. The kids didn't see where he came from, but they saw exactly what happened next: Without saying a word, the man picked Kim up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.
The guy held Kim gently like a baby and just walked down the street In fact, the calm way the man behaved led TJ to believe that he must be a relative of Kim's. But something wasn't right. “I could see Kim's face," TJ said, “She was scared.
As the man walked on, Kim's fear transformed into weeps (哭泣), and then she cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the man's control. “What are you doing?" Julie shouted. But the man, undisturbed, just walked the length of the block until he reached an alley (小巷) and disappeared.
TJ was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The only thing he wanted to do was to get Kim back. But what was a 4-foot-tall kid going to do to stop a grown man? “I wanted to help but I couldn't do it myself," he thought to himself. “Tell Kim's parents, Julie!” He shouted as he started running towards the alley.
Kim's parents were relaxing on the sofa in their living room when their front door burst open.
Paragraph 1:“A bad guy just picked Kim up and took her away!” yelled Julie.

读后续写(25分)
Paragraph 1:
“A bad guy just picked Kim up and took her away!” yelled Julie. So shocked were Kim’s parents that they jumped up from the sofa and rushed over to Julie. Learning what had happened, they phoned the police without delay. The next moment, they jumped into their car and drove off directed by Julie. By then TJ had reached the alley, but the man was nowhere to be seen. “I must find Kim,” TJ said to himself. He ran along the alley to the end, where he spotted the man walking towards a white house. “Stop! Stop!” With these words, he charged at the guy fearlessly and held fast to Kim. However hard the guy tried to get rid of TJ, TJ wouldn’t give in.
Paragraph 2:
At that very moment, Kim’s parents arrived. “Help! Help!” TJ shouted. Immediately Kim’s father dashed toward the guy. Seeing this, the guy hurriedly let go of Kim and broke into a run. Kim’s father caught hold of him and pressed him to the ground. Kim ran crying into her mother’s arms. Minutes later, the police arrived and arrested the guy. TJ breathed a sigh of relief and smiled happily. TJ’s quick thinking and bravery saved a little girl in the neighborhood from unimaginable consequences.
