Astypalea,a butterfly-shaped island in the central Aegean, hopes to become Greece's first carbon-free tourist destination. Under a deal with the government.Volkswagen.a carmaker. Has donated several new electric vehicles for use by Astypalea's public services; it will sell others at cost price to its 1,200 residents. In return, the government has largely increased subsidies(补贴)for the islanders to buy electric cars and will build a hybrid solar and wind power plant to replace those polluting generators.
Unlike other nearby islands,Astypalea is not connected to Greece's electricitysystem. With only 3,000 rooms for visitors in small hotels or flats, tourism is still low-key. Many residents make a living the old-fashioned way:raising gouts, keeping bees and fishing. The island was selected for Volkswagen's e-mobility experiment after Nikos Komineas, the go-ahead mayor.contacted the transport ministry for help in finding an electric bus to try out on its rough roads.
Most islanders sound enthusiastic about the project.Mr Komineas expects the number of private cars on Astypalea to fall by a third over the next five years. Its residents,he says, will get around on e-scooters and electric minibuses, which will be free, linked to a mobile-phone app and available round the clock.
Some observers detect a bit of green washing. Building a solar park that would generate the island's electricity will not get started before the tourist season ends. A single wind turbine(涡轮) will not be fixed before 2026 even if the licensing process goes smoothly. On the other hand. The islanders worry that tourists will go elsewhere if the view is destroyed by a turbine 200 metres high. And even then, the hybrid power unit is planned to cover only about 80% of summer demand. But it is a start.

A.Offering financial support. B.Developing a mobile-phone app.
C.Making electric cars. D.Establishing a power plant.

30.What is the major concern of the islanders if a wind turbine is fixed?
A.The complex licensing process. B.Environmental damage.
C.Loss of tourists. D.The influence on their daily life.
31.What can be inferred from the text?
A.The experiment will come to nothing.
B.There are barriers in conducting the project.
C.Green tourism will become a trend in Greece.
D.The islanders are unwilling to change their lifestyle.

Saturn(土星) is famous for its lovely rings. But a new study suggests the planet has spent most of its 4.5 billion years without them. That’s because the rings are likely only 10 million to 100 million years old.according to a newly published report in the journal Science that's based on findings from NASA's Cassini probe(探测器).
Cassini spent some 13 years orbiting Saturn before diving and impacting into its atmosphere During its final orbits. The spacecraft dove between the planet and its rings. That let scientists measure the gravitational effect of the rings and get a good estimate of the ring material's mass. What they found is that it's only about 40 percent of the mass of Saturn's moon Mimas. This small mass suggests that the rings are relatively young.
"There's no huge amount of massive material hidden in the rings that we can't see,"says Philip Nicholoson,a planetary scientist,"The rings are almost pure ice." He says the relative youthfulness of Saturn's ring system is something that scientists have come to suspectonly recently. “It was easier to believe that it formed at the same time as Saturn and its satellites did," Nicholson says.“It's hard to understand how they could have formed that recently."It's possible that the rings are the remains of a comet(彗星)or some other icy object that made a chance encounter with Saturn and got tom up.he says.Or.perhaps one of Saturn's icy moons got whacked by an impact with a large comet.
Whatever happened,it's looking more and more likely that Saturn's splendid rings are a temporary phenomenon that humans are lucky to get to see at all.Previous measurements from Cassini helped show that the rings may be disappearing at a rapid speed.as dusty ice particles(颗粒)get pulled down to Saturn by its gravity. In another 100 million years.Saturn’s most unique feature might be gone.
32.How did scientists estimate the ring material's mass?
A.By analyzing the age of the rings.
B.By timing Cassini's orbiting Saturn
C.By recording Cassin's flying speed.
D.By measuring the gravitational effect of the rings.
33.What's the previous common understanding of Saturn's rings?
A.They are made up of pure ice.
B.They are the remains of a comet.
C.They came into being when Saturn formed.
D.They are a natural phenomenon of all planets.
34.What does the underlined word"whacked" in the third paragraph mean?
A.Crashed. B.Separated. C.Absorbed. D.Pulled.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Saturn Put Rings on It Relatively Recently
B.How Saturn's Rings Formed Came to Light Finally
C.NASA Detected ley Object in Saturn's Rings Recently
D.When Saturn's Rings Will Disappear Is Being Dug into

Teen Becomes A Local Hero
When Sydney Raley headed into her weekend shift on Saturday,December 18,she likely expected to do more of the same: Stand al the drive-through window, take orders over the headset, and hand each customer their meal with a smile.
In fact. That’s exactly how it started. Sydney Raley has been working at McDonald's for about seven months and so far.it's been her typical after-school job.The day had been mostly normal-making coffee, makingdrinks, and going into the lunch rush.
But a few hours into her shift.things took a dramatic tum. After handing a customer some of their food,Sydney let them know that more would be coming as soon as it was ready. But just seconds later, she noticed a terrible look of panic spread across the woman's face. Then came the coughing. She was coughing like carry.and was speechless. Her daughter was in the passenger seat and looked extremely confused and frightened.
Sydney immediately knew she was choking. The first aid training Sydney received more than four years ago hit her. Most 15-year-olds might panicat the sight of this. But not Sydney, Instead. the teen remained calm and quickly shouted to both her manager and the woman's daughter to dial 911.Then,she dove through the drive-through window and came to the rescuer
The teen pushed the driver's side door forcefully open and got the choking woman to her feet. Then she dug down deep into her memory bank to recall everything she learned from her Red Cross babysitter class-which she'd taken four years earlier. All that training of how to use the Heimlich maneuver(哈姆立克急救法)immediately kicked in.Still.she had never actually had to use the life-saving technique before, and after a few tries.it wasn't quite working.Luckily, another customer was just a few feet away in the parking lot.
