We think dogs are our best friends. A new study showed that maybe it’s because dogs can understand our words much better than we thought. It found that dogs understand not only what we say, but also how we say it.
“The results were very exciting and surprising,” said the lead researcher Attila Andics, from Eotvos Lorand University in Budapest.
For the study, the researchers first trained 13 dogs for months. The dogs had to sit quietly inside machines, so that the researchers could check their brain activity.
Then the researchers put headphones on the dogs and played people’s voices to them. There were four different voices. Some were of positive(积极的)words, such as “well done”, or neutral(不带感 情色彩的)words like “however”. The words were also in different tones(音调).Some were positive and some were neutral(中立的).
Brain scans(扫描)showed that the dogs could recognize(认出)words, as well as the tone of words, much like people do. The positive words with a positive tone brought the strongest activity in theirbrain.
“It shows that for dogs, a nice phrase(短语)can work very well as a reward, but it works best if both words and tones match,” said Andics.
They also found that dogs deal with meaningful words with the left side of the brain and tones with the right. Human brains work in the same way.
“It gave us a new understanding of language,” said Andics. That is, not only humans understand the meaning in words, other species(种类)do too.
1.Which side of the brain deals with tones, for both dogs and humans?
A. The left side for both dogs and humans.
B. The right side for both dogs and humans.
C. The left side for dogs and the right side for humans.
D. The right side for dogs and the left side for humans.
2.Which of the following is NOT true according to the research?
A. Dogs can understand our words much better than we thought.
B. The dogs could recognize words just as people do.
C. The researchers played four different people's voices to the dogs.
D. From the study, the researchers checked the dogs' body activity.
3.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Dogs are human’s best friends. B. Dogs can learn human’s language.
C. Dogs can understand the meaning in words. D. Dogs are similar to humans.

Everybody hates rats (big mice). But in the earthquake capitals of the world—Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey—rats will soon be man's best friends.
What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue(拯救)dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives : the rat.
How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.
Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that." Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity!
The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Organization in Scotland says, “It would be wonderful. A rat could get into spaces we couldn‘t get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn’t safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).
1.Why will rats become man's best friends in the world earthquake capitals?
A. Because they can take the place of man's rescue jobs.
B. Because they can find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings.
C. Because they can serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings.
D. Because they can get into small spaces.
2. From the third paragraph, we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by____________.
A. the noise made by the rat B. the rat's unusual behaviour
C. the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back D. the smell given off by the person
3.Which of these statements is NOT the advantage that rats have?
A. They are more lovely than other animals. B. They are less expensive to train than dogs.
C. They don’t need electricity. D. They are small and can get into small places.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A. At present rats have taken the place of dogs in searching for people.
B. The “rat project” has been completed.
C. People are now happy to see a rat in a building.
D. Now people still use dogs and robots to perform rescues.

Nowadays, more and more people are fond of keeping pets because they can bring pleasure. But others don't think so. They think it's terrible to do it. In my opinion, keeping pets will do good to our family and ourselves. First, it's relaxing to have a pet to stay with us because it is cute and smart. For example, a dog may understand us well when we are upset or tired. Second, for the old, keeping a pet means having a family along with them, so they will not only feel less lonely but also stay relaxed by talking to them. What's more, most dogs are always faithful to their owners. When there is a fire or something bad happens, they can help keep people's houses safe and sometimes even save people's lives.
All in all, I think it's a good idea to keep pets and I am sure we will get a lot. Especially, we can learn responsibility by doing that.
