“Where are yu ging? ” is ften asked by Chinese when tw friends meet in the street. But if yu ask Americans the same questin, they will be unhappy because they think that “where they are ging” is their wn business. In their eyes, nly a pliceman will ask a questin like that in the street.
The same thing will happen t Americans if yu ask them “Have yu had yur meal? ” In fact, t us Chinese, such questins d nt mean anything but a greeting.
In America, when tw friends meet in the street, they will say “Hell! ” r “Hw are yu? ”They never ask “Where are yu ging? ”r “Have yu had yur meal? ”If tw friends meet at mealtime and ne asks the ther “Have yu had yur meal? ”, that means he wants t ask his friend t have a meal with him.
