    九 Unit 3 Period 1

    Ⅰ.  阅读理解

    A

As dusk was approaching,  we made our way down to

the beach,  as everyone else did. Some people had even brought

along a picnic,  a family day out. As it got darker,  people became

quiet and talked less,  keeping an eye on the beach.

Suddenly there was movement at the edge(边缘)of the surf and all heads turned as one. There,  standing by the edge of the water was the smallest penguin we had ever seen. He looked left,  then right,  as if he was considering crossing a busy road and then he ran quickly across to the sand and the penguin burrows(洞穴).

He must have been the scout,  because after him,  there came groups of penguins:  some consisted of two or three penguins and some had about ten or fifteen,  but they all made the same mad dash across the sand into the burrows,  as if they couldnt get there fast enough. The crowd of penguin watchers was quiet,  except for the occasional “oohs” and “ahs” from adults as well as children. The groups started to become fewer in number and finally no more penguins came from the sea.

We sat on the grandstand(大看台)for a while,  not talking,  just feeling amazed at what wed just seen. Neither of us had ever seen penguins in the wild before,  only in zoos and it was an amazing feeling. You could see the penguins here every evening and morning,  but they werent in cages or in small pools. The sea was their playground and it is a sight we would recommend to anyone.

After the penguins had gone to their burrows,  you could walk along boardwalks and see them there. They make a lot of noise for all the size of them!

So if you are travelling,  make a tour of Phillip Island and Summerland Beach. You wont regret it.

The city-state of Dubai that is home to the worlds tallest building is fast improving its reputation as the city of the future. On May 22,  Dubai officials added to their list of futuristic accomplishments with the introduction of the worlds first robot police officer.

Nicknamed Robocop after the 1987 action movie,  the 1. 7-meter tall humanoid (像人的) robot was introduced at the 4th annual Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference.  First introduced in 2011 as REEM by Barcelona-based PAL Robotics,  the robot was built to entertain guests at conferences and serve as an information booth at public places. However, the forward-thinking officials of the Dubai police force saw another potential application and partnered with the Spanish company to build a version that would help improve public safety.

Locals and visitors can get help from Lieutenant Robocop which is currently on duty at the Dubai Mall,  using the touchscreen on its chest. Armed with technology from Google and IBMs supercomputer Watson,  the “policeman” can provide visitors with directions and other information regarding the mall in one of six languages, including Arabic and English and also accept payment for any fines,  like parking tickets.  It can also detect criminals with an 80 percent accuracy from 100-feet away and send the information real-time to command center through its camera eyes.

While Robocop cannot physically protect people in trouble, an SOS button on its touchscreen can connect them to a human member of the Dubai police force instantly.  When not assisting people or seeking out lawbreakers, Robocop brings smiles to peoples faces by posing for selfies or showering them with compliments.

Once the robot officer has been thoroughly tested,  the Smart Services Department at Dubai Police plans to “hire” more Robocops to patrol (巡逻) other public areas and also act as receptionists at police stations.

    Animal-friendly?

The topic of our last class discussion was “How can zoos provide animals with a good life? ” Everyone believed it was impossible for zoos to give animals a caring environment.  Our teacher suggested that visiting a modern zoo might give us a new point of view.

1 In our discussion,  many people said that zoos were full of smelly cages with unhappy animals living in.  Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,  however,  was set in an attractive,  open environment.  Trees and flowers had been planted around the park. 2

At school,  some people accused(指责)zoos of exploiting(剥削)animals for money; but at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,  as I see it,  nothing could be further from the truth. 3

Before I visited Cleveland Metroparks Zoo,  I wasnt sure about the rights and wrongs of zoos. 4 I feel that,  although zoos cant provide the freedom of the wild,  they can be animal-friendly by giving animals a safe and caring environment.  As long as they do this well,  to my mind they make a good contribution(贡献)to animal health.  They also play an important part in educating us about wildlife.

     5

On the bus back to school,  we all agreed that what we liked most was the zoos environment and we would recommend(推荐)it for next years group.

    A. It is difficult for the zoo to raise animals.

    B. More and more animals enjoy their wild homes.

    C. I think lots of my friends changed their minds,  too.

    D. Most of the money is used to improve the conditions at the zoo.

    E. I went to the zoo and was pleasantly surprised by what I found.

    F. In my opinion,  the animals,  rather than seeming upset,  were pleased.

    G. It was difficult to say how a zoo could really make up for animals loss of freedom.

A theme park manager has the job of watching over and controlling the daily operations of the theme park.  One of their most important jobs is to manage the visitors experience.  This can include everything from the appearance of the park to the hours of operation.  A theme park manager also makes plans and develops strategies(策略)to ensure the health and safety of visitors.  To help keep visitors satisfied,  he usually sets customer service policies(政策)that show how employees should treat visitors and respond to their needs.

Often,  theme park managers make decisions regarding theme park policies.  For example,  the manager of a theme park may have to decide when the park opens and closes daily.  He may also choose when the park will open and close for the season.  If the weather turns terrible,  the manager often has to decide whether or not to open the park for the day.  A person in this position may also be responsible for making policies on when a visitor can get a refund(退款)or discount on his admission fee.

The facilities in a theme park have to be maintained(保养)in order to ensure they stay in good working state.  A theme park manager typically carries out a routine inspection.  The individual who holds this position also creates plans and strategies for dealing with emergencies.  He may also watch over security workers who help keep the park safe for visitors.

Some theme park managers also have the job of staying abreast of changes in the theme park industry and knowing what the parks competitors are doing.  The information the manager gets through these efforts often helps him decide when to make improvements and how to keep the park competitive.

The extent(范围)of a theme park managers job may depend on the size of the park.  In a small park,  he may be closely with his employees.  In a large park,  he may work to set policies and then depend on other managers or department heads to carry them out.  What he needs to do is watch over these managers.
