email是应用文的一种，是现代人类交际的重要媒介之一，也是人与人之间表达情感，传递信息，沟通思想的重要桥梁。
写email时，首先在“发件人（Frm）”一栏中写上发件人的email地址，在“收件人（T）”一栏中写上收件人的地址，然后在“主题（Subject）”栏中输入你所发出的email的主题，该主题将显示在收件人收件箱的“主题”区，如果有需要传送的文件，在“附件(Attach)栏”中添加附件，之后书写正文部分，格式与一般书信格式类似，包括称谓、信件正文、结尾语和签名。
目前大多数较正式的email的信件正文都采用“事由（交代写信原因）——主旨（陈述此信的主要内容）——结尾（总结全文，表达希望等）”的三段式结构。好朋友之间的邮件所使用的语言和格式可以稍微随意一些。
