Have you ever wondered why certain pop songs just make you feel so good? Researchers studying the question found that uncertainty and surprise gave listeners the most pleasure. The study included 80,000 chords (和弦) in 745 pop songs between 1958 and 1991.
Each song was stripped of its melody (旋律) and lyrics (歌词) so that only chords were left and the results couldn't be influenced by other imaginations of the songs that listeners might have had.
They found two things. Listeners got great pleasure from unexpected chords when they knew what would happen. However, they still found it pleasant to hear familiar chords when they did not know what would follow.
Vincent Cheung, the lead researcher, said, “Pleasant songs are likely those which keep a good balance between knowing what is going to happen next and surprising us with something we did not expect. Understanding how music starts our pleasure system in the brain could explain why listening to music might help us feel better when we are feeling blue.”
Cheung told CNN that pleasure in music is connected to expectation. The study before had looked into the effects of surprise on pleasure, but his team's study also paid attention to the uncertainty of listeners' expectation.

If you think that running marathons will help you live a long and healthy life, new research may come as a shock. According to a recent scientific study, people who do a very strenuous workout are as likely to die as people who do no exercise at all.
Scientists in Denmark have been studying 1,000 joggers (慢跑者)and non-joggers for 12 years. The death rates from the sample group indicate that people who jog at a proper pace two or three times a week for less than two and a half hours in total are least likely to die. The best speed to jog at was found to be about 5 miles per hour. The research suggests that people who jog more than three times a week or at higher speeds of over 7 mph die at the same rate as non-joggers. The scientists think that this is because strenuous exercise causes the heart and arteries(动脉)structural changes. Over time, this can cause serious injuries.
Peter Schnohr, a researcher in Copenhagen, said, “If your goal is to decrease the risk of death and improve life expectancy(预期寿命),jogging a few times a week at a proper pace is a good strategy. Anything more is just unnecessary, and it may be harmful.”
The implications (暗示) of this are that moderate forms of exercise such as tai chi, yoga and walking may be better for us than triathlons and long-distance running and cycling. According to Jacob Louis Marott, another researcher involved in the study, you don't actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn't actually do too much.
8.The underlined word “strenuous” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A.regular B.hard C.practical D.flexible
9.The author presents some figures in Paragraph 2 to .
A.suggest giving up jogging
B.show risks of doing sports
C.provide supportive evidence
D.introduce the research process
10.According to the scientists, why is too much exercise harmful?
A.It may injure the heart and arteries.
B.It can make the body tired out.
C.It will bring much pressure.
D.It consumes too much energy.
11.What can be inferred from the text?
A.No exercise is the best choice.
B.More exercise means a healthier life.
C.Marathon runners are least likely to die.
D.Proper exercise contributes to good health.
D
Despite the anxiety that the first digital novel caused in 1993, publishers weren't too concerned that e-books would one day replace printed books. However, that attitude was changed suddenly in 2007 when the Amazon Kindle came onto the market, which led to e-book sales jumping up to 1,260%. Since then, e-books' popularity has continued to rise steadily. The publishing industry seemed to have lost all possible ability to regain its position. Will printed books eventually become a thing of the past? According to Mike Shatzkin, founder and CEO of the Idea Logical Company, printed books just for reading will, in 10 years from now, be unusual. “Not so unusual that a kid will say, ‘Mommy, what's that?’ but unusual enough that on the train you'll see one or two people reading something printed, while everyone else is reading on a tablet computer screen.” And Shatzkin believes that the demise of print is sure to happen, though such a day won't arrive for perhaps 50 to 100 or more years.
Robert Stein, founder of the Institute for the Future of the Book, however, believes that books won't disappear entirely, at least not anytime soon. “Print will exist, and it may have an artistic value,” he says. He predicts that the distance between writers and readers will be made less obvious by a social reading experience in which authors and consumers can digitally interact with each other to discuss any passage, sentence or line.
Should print really disappear entirely? According to Maryanne Wolf, director of the Center for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, electronic reading can negatively affect the way the brain responds to the text, including reading comprehension and the ability to pay attention to details like the order of events. “My worry is that we'll have a short-circuited(短路的) reading brain, excellent for gathering information but not necessarily for forming critical, analytical deep reading skills,” Wolf says. She hopes that we continue to keep a “bi-literate” society—one that values both the digital and printed words. “A full reading brain circuit is a huge contribution to the intellectual development of our species. Anything that threatens it deserves our attention.”
12.How did publishers feel about the rising e-book sales inspired by the Amazon Kindle?
A.Worried. B.Excited. C.Curious. D.Doubtful.
13.The underlined word “demise” in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A.rise B.death
C.adjustment D.popularity
14.According to Robert Stein, paper books will exist because of .
A.the artistic value
B.the digital interaction
C.the growing popularity
D.the traditional design
15.It can be concluded from the last paragraph that Wolf holds that .
A.e-reading will strengthen the power of our brain
B.digital books and paper books should not coexist
C.e-reading will make us more critical and thoughtful
D.we should not risk losing a full reading brain circuit

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time—about eight hours after you wake up—your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleeping habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon.
Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and a more rested mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer from less problems such as heart disease.
Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep too long.
If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
