Writing the bk was als a jurney fr Fletcher, wh started it in Prtland, Oregn, but finished it abut 2,000 miles away in Texas.
Fletcher learned much abut plar bears by spending time with them. Thanks t a special invitatin frm the curatr (园长) at the Oregn Z, Fletcher had a chance t watch tw plar bears in a quiet space ff limits t the public.
Her dg, Neville, helped Fletcher understand hw humans and animals might cmmunicate withut wrds. Being with Neville gave Fletcher insight int hw Arthur and the bear might relate t each ther.
Fletcher did research in ld dcuments and histries t discver what Arthur might have eaten and wrn, but she relied n her wn childhd fr details (细节) f his travels by land.
Grwing up in Califrnia and Ohi, Fletcher lved t explre the utdrs with her three yunger siblings. They wuld spend hurs in nearby fields and hills and explre the pnd and river — just like Arthur and the bear in the bk.

It might sund like 1.5 millin penguins (企鹅) are a hard thing t miss. Hwever, that is indeed the case with this super-clny f Adélie penguins wh have managed t cnceal themselves fr many years in the Danger Islands f Antarctica. The far-away, difficult t reach, land is always circled by thick ice. It was, therefre, believed t be uninhabitable and scientists paid little attentin t it.
Hwever in 2014, when Stny Brk University scientist Heather Lynch was examining pictures f the islands, she nticed what appeared t be penguin waste. T find ut what was happening, Lynch planned an expeditin (探险) with a team that included researchers.
After several mnths f preparatin, the researchers reached the Danger Islands in December 2015. T their jy, they were greeted by hundreds f thusands f the nesting (筑巢) birds. Thrugh several days f hard wrk, the researchers came t the cnclusin that the islands are hme t ver 1.5 millin penguins. The discvery is particularly exciting given that n the West Antarctic Peninsula, Adélie penguin numbers are drpping rapidly. With the new additins, scientists nw say there are ver fur millin knwn pairs f the birds in Antarctica.
In the study, published in Scientific Reprts n March 2, 2018, the scientists said ne f the things that surprised them abut the newly-fund penguins was their nesting habits. Unlike ther Adélie penguins wh nest in a circle t prtect themselves, the Danger Islands birds seem t have n such fear and prefer nesting separately. And thanks t the pinkish waste, the researchers knw the penguins’ diet is mainly made up f shrimp (虾).
“This exciting discvery shws us just hw much mre there still is t learn abut this amazing animal,” said Rd Dwnie, head f the plar prgrams at the Wrld Wildlife Fundatin (WWF). “But it als reminds (提醒) us t prtect the waters ff the cast f Antarctica t safeguard Adélie penguins frm bth verfishing and glbal warming.”
