Dragn Bat Festival

The Dragn Bat Festival is als called the Duanwu Festival. Since it is celebrated n the fifth day f the fifth mnth accrding t the Chinese Lunar calendar, it earns anther name — Duble Fifth Festival.Actually, it has a variety f names in Chinese.

It is a ppular and traditinal festival celebrated by the Hans, Kreans, Mnglians, Huis, Yis, Bais, Mias, Zhuangs and thers, altgether 27 f the 56 natinalities in China.And nw the Asian peple, including Japanese, Vietnamese, etc.
The rigins f Dragn Bat Festival
There are a great many f legends abut the rigin f Dragn Bat Festival. The mst ppular thery f the rigin f the festival is that it was derived frm the activities cmmemrating [kə‘meməreitiŋ] （纪念）Qu Yuan. The stry abut Qu Yuan has been deeply rted in Chinese culture and this festival, s it is definitely a very imprtant factr fr the rigin f the festival.
Qu Yuan’s drwning int the Milu River
Qu Yuan was a minister f the State f Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei prvinces, during the Warring States Perid (475-221BC)（战国时期）. He was upright, lyal and highly esteemed （德高望重）fr his wise cunsel [‘kaunsəl] （进谏）that brught peace and prsperity t the state.
Hwever, when a dishnest and crrupt prince vilified [‘vilifaid] （中伤） Qu Yuan, he was disgraced, dismissed frm ffice, and eventually exiled. During his exile, Qu Yuan did nt give up. He traveled extensively, taught and wrte abut his ideas. His wrks, the Lament [lə'ment] (Li Sa), the Nine Chapters (Jiu Zhang), are masterpieces and invaluable fr studying ancient Chinese culture.
He saw the gradual decline f his mtherland, the Chu State. And when he heard that the Chu State was defeated by the strng Qin State, he was s despaired that he ended his life by flinging himself int the Milu River.
It was said that after peple heard he drwned, they were greatly dismayed. Fishermen raced t the spt in their bats t search fr his bdy. Unable t find his bdy, peple threw rice dumplings, eggs and ther fd int the river t feed fish, hping t secure his crpse. Since then, peple started t cmmemrate Qu Yuan thrugh dragn bat races, eating rice dumplings and ther activities, n the anniversary f his death, the 5th f the fifth mnth.
This is said t be the rigin f the present natin-wide custm, which is the cmmn peple’s expressin f grief ver Qu’s death.
But since sme f the well-knwn traditins f the festival already existed even befre Qu Yuan, ther rigins f the festival were als suggested. Wen Yidu suggested that the festival may be assciated with dragn clsely because tw f the mst imprtant activities f the festival, dragn bat racing and eating rice dumplings, are related t dragn.
Anther view is that the festival is riginated frm the tab 禁忌 f evil days. The fifth mnth f the Chinese lunar calendar is traditinally cnsidered an evil mnth and the 5th f the mnth is particularly a bad day, s a lt f tab had been develped.

Rice Dumpling is a pyramid dumpling made f glutinus [‘ɡlu:tinəs] rice（糯米）wrapped in bamb r reed （芦苇）leaves.

The peple f Chu wh murned the death f Qu Yuan threw rice balls int the river t feed fishes ,s the fishes wuldn’t eat his bdy,every year n the fifth day f the fifth mnth. But ne year, the spirit f Qu Yuan appeared and tld the murners that a huge reptile [‘reptail]（爬行动物）in the river had stlen the rice. The spirit then advised them t wrap the rice in silk and bind （绑） it with five different-clred threads befre tssing （投） it int the river.
Ingredients f rice dumplings
Ingredients such as beans, ltus seeds（莲子）, chestnuts（栗子）, prk and the ylk [jəuk] （蛋黄）f a salted duck egg are ften added t the glutinus rice.
Dragn bat races
The dragn-bat races symblize the many attempts t rescue and recver Qu‘s bdy. A typical dragn bat ranges frm 50-100 feet in length, with a beam （梁）f abut 5.5 feet, accmmdating tw paddlers seated side by side.

In the areas f Xiamen and Zhangzhu f Fujian Prvince, a big wden bat is arranged lying at the finishing line. When race bats reach the line, a number f ducks are released frm the big wden bat int the river fr all the racers t catch amid [ə‘mid] （在… 之中）thunderus cheers f spectatrs n the banks.

Recently, CCTV held the Chinese Dragn Bat Race arund the riental wrld, many teams get invlved the lng-term race during the whle year. And Wujin District gt a race divisin. We can see the pwerful athletes and grgeus teams in April every year.

Huang came acrss a panic-stricken wman wh held a child abut six years ld in ne arm and tk a child abut three years ld by the hand. Puzzled, Huang dismunted frm his hrse and asked why she behaved s. The wman replied in a plaintive vice, “The lder is an rphan and the yunger is my wn sn. In case we run int Huang Cha’s sldiers, I wuld flee with the lder alne at the sacrifice f my wn sn.”
Huang was mved by the reply, pulling up tw mugwrt plants at the radside immediately and gave them t her. Huang added:“ Tell the pr residents in Dengzhu city t hang this kind f mugwrt plants n their drs. Seeing this sign, my sldiers will nt kill them. ” the next day, Huang Cha’s army captured Dengzhu city, killed the magistrate [‘mædӡistrit] (地方官员）,and distributed grain frm the fficial granaries [’ɡrænəri] （谷仓）t the pr. That day happened t be the Dragn Bat Festival; hence the custm f hanging mugwrt plants n drs.
Drinking realgar [ri‘ælɡə]（雄黄）wine
It is said that, n the day f Qu Yuan’s death, an ld practitiner f Chinese medicine pured a jar f realgar wine int the Milu River, suppsedly t make drunk the dragn and ther aquatic animals which might devur Qu Yuan’s crpse.
Yet the present custm is a little different frm what it used t be. At the festival, adults f a family drink it as a preventin against vermin [‘və:min] （害虫）and children, wh are unfit t drink wine, have sme f the wine applied t their nses and ears fr the same purpse.
