The idea f inventing an internatinal language is nt a new ne. Over the past 180 years, linguists (语言学家) have created ver ten different languages that are based n German, Spanish, and English. One f these was Basic English.
By 1923 the First Wrld War had been ver fr five years, but Eurpe was still recvering (恢复) frm its effects. Charles Kay Ogden, a linguist and writer, was running several bkshps in Cambridge. He published (出版) The Meaning f Meaning (1923), a bk describing hw we use language. The bk received high praise, which drve Ogden t design an internatinal language — smething that was much simpler than English. In 1930 Ogden’s bk Basic English: A General Intrductin with Rules and Grammar was published.
Perhaps it takes abut seven years fr ne t becme a gd English speaker. Ogden believed that Basic English culd be learned in seven weeks. There were nly 850 wrds and the grammar was very simple.
The language attracted the attentin f educatrs all ver the wrld, but its develpment was stpped by the Secnd Wrld War. After the war, bth the British Prime Minister Winstn Churchill and the President f the United States Franklin D. Rsevelt lked fr ideas that might bring wrld peace. They bth gave speeches that encuraged the use f Ogden’s internatinal language. In the past 60 years, the language has had sme success. In sme parts f East Asia, teachers are still using Ogden’s wrd lists.
Hwever, in the main, the language has disappeared.
