I used to think I was victim(受害者)of life. Everything bad happened to me. My dad died right before my fifth birthday. My mum was angry for most of my childhood. People have left me often, by death or by choice, since I was young.
After dealing with this for so long, I finally understood that I had to change what I did and how I did it. I could no longer hold on to sad memories. I could choose to grow from my experiences and choose another way to live. And it was all up to(取决于)me.
Healing(治愈)old pains and changing habitual behaviours haven’t always been easy, but it’s always been worth it. I finally have compassion(同情)for my past, even though I did some things that I know were terrible.
Now I know that I can forgive(原谅)myself for not knowing better in the past. I can work hard to learn each day and move forward. I can take steps each day that fill me up instead of tearing me and others down.
I know I can’t control everything, but I can control what I do as long as I take action. I can’t control what happens, but I can control how I do it.
My life is completely different from what it once was. I’m no longer so depressed or worried that I can’t leave the house. I’m no longer scared. My life is mine.
I heard about this saying: “I use my memories, but I don’t let them use me.” It’s a beautiful thing and I know everyone is able to do it. You have so much power over your experience.

Scientists have long been looking for life in outer space. They recently found something exciting on Venus(金星), the planet closest to ours.
British scientists have discovered phosphine(磷化氢)in Venus’ atmosphere(大气层). Phosphine is a hopeful sign of life. On Earth, phosphine is produced when organic(有机的)matter breaks down. The same thing could be happening on Venus. Still, scientists need to send a probe to Venus to see whether life exists(存在)there.
In fact, Venus has long been ignored(忽视)in the search for life because of its high temperatures and atmospheric pressure. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system — the surface temperature is 470℃. The pressure there is 92 times greater than that on Earth. Even if humans could bear the heat, they would be crushed(粉碎)by the pressure.
However, it’s possible that life could exist in the planet’s atmosphere. Temperatures there are about — 1℃ to 93℃, which is far more suitable for life. The pressure there is similar to that of the Earth as well. The phosphine was found in Venus’ cloudy atmosphere — around 60 kilometers above its surface.
Phosphine is known as an indirect sign of life. So are gases like methane(甲烷)and ozone. Scientists focus on such signs when they look for life outside of the Earth. These gases can exist in the atmospheres of planets for a long time, allowing scientists to find them with the help of probes. However, it is liquid(液体)water that is considered to be the most important sign of life.
